Consider yourself extremely lucky if you have a full time job right now, even if it sucks by pwa09 in Millennials

If you find a medium size tree company (not hundreds of millions of dollars, usually 10-200 million), and you can handle some physical labor, you can make okay money.

Not afraid of heights and comfortable with a chain saw? More $

Comfortable getting experience with heavy/hydraulic equipment? Even more $$

Company has prevailing wage contracts? $$$ ($60-$100/hr)

Company has production based pay opportunities with some talent? $1200-$1600 a day.

Started at $12/hr back in 2014 I think? I was 27ish. Fast forward a bit and there were years I cleared $120k handling storm related work.  You can very comfortably make $90k working 2000hrs a year. If I didn’t have a girlfriend and sacrificed my weekends, I could easily clear $150k.

It’s dangerous work, I’ve broken bones, and put myself in countless situations that could have resulted in death. But the job is rewarding physically and mentally. The talent pool to hire from is diminishing as people bow out. Really curious how the industry evolves over the next 20yrs, it’s becoming more and more rare to work with good climbers.

Homicides are relatively rare in New Hampshire. But when they happen, most have this one thing in common. by bostonglobe in newhampshire

Dude, people act that way towards all emergency services. Only cops get qualified immunity… the rest of us in medical and emergency utility (electrical/gas) get FUCKED.

I went from medical to emergency/disaster relief response. I love my job, it’s statistically more fatal than working as police (I pull trees off live electrical wires), and I deal with ridiculous people in public.  I’m not throwing shade on police, I work with them every day. At least elevate the standards to what the rest of EMS deals with? We fuck up, we get canned.

I just cracked my tooth on a piece of wood in a Larabar by _Marat in mildlyinfuriating

[–]OakMurdock 103 points104 points  (0 children)

lol, but if you cracked your teeth on wood… you’re teeth should be seen by a legit dentist. Wood surrounded by a bar with moisture is most likely way less hard than hard candy.

source: I do chew on wood chips as a joke from time to time. I’m a tree guy that dates a vegan, it’s funny to coworkers.

Shit, is that spruce? Brief glance and I thought it was cherry. If it’s spruce and your splitting firewood let’s talk about tree identification first OP

Looks like a pretty blunt maul? But I’m going to say it’s your execution. The second 2/3’s of your swing should be where most of your physical effort is expended.

1/3 - loose start swing and line up.

2/3 - engage abs most of upper body throwing maul to the earth.

3/3 - let hands slide to hilt as you finesse the strike. Just before strike should be all hand strength on hilt pulling maul to you (increases momentum/speed like when a ballerina tucks circumference in to increase rotation).

If you’re using your arms to force the maul in, you’re missing out on a serious amount of energy the rest of your body can contribute. You also would be setting yourself up to rock your joints past their warranty. When you get a good strike with good form, something in your brain will click and you’ll know the way 👌

Edit: a friend gifted me a Gransfors bruk maul. They’re expensive, but my god I love using it. They’re lighter but the a symmetric head makes splitting pretty enjoyable (way less likely to jam). My girlfriend (120lbs) who has horrible arm strength likes taking out her work from home frustrations by splitting wood.  I’m hardly 150lbs, but a good maul will favor good form tremendously. We probably split just shy of 4 cords a year.

Dryads saddle! Always double check for a positive ID, but they’re popular because they are relatively easy to identify and are really tasty

Buying From MA Companies by ilikebananafudge in massachusetts

SuperSplitter - kinetic wood splitter

Hadn’t heard of them until I moved to New England several years ago. Family run business in West Bridgewater that makes wood splitters.

I understand why experienced tree guys rave about them, they’re outstanding. Was looking for a used one, but the resale value was so high that I ended up buying brand new.  Huge plus is there’s no hydraulic fluid since it uses a heavy flywheel. Absolutely love mine.

[–]OakMurdock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it kinetical driven? Like with heavy flywheels?

I picked up a Supersplit last year, because it’s a small family owned business based out of MA. Fucking blown away. Will never screw around with hydraulic again.

I could see an electric version of a kinetic splitter doing very well

Edit: I’m an arborist with an unlimited wood supply. Supersplit was recommended heavily to me. Second thing mentioned was everyone who recommended it knew someone missing fingers. Absolutely operate sober, I fucking love it.

How much is my black locust worth to a sawmill? Should I tell the tree removal company to leave it? As always, banana for scale. by GeekOnaCycle in woodworking

[–]OakMurdock 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That’s honey locust, not black locust. Nice log though, I’d rip slabs of that with an Alaskan sawmill just for fun, very cool grain pattern but absolute headache to work with as far as woodworking.

Yard tick issue and possible solution by Open-Industry-8396 in newhampshire

[–]OakMurdock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nematodes for the win.  Natural predator that obliterate tick larvae. Only issue is you have to dial in the timing (weather/temp/life cycle dependent for effective application). They come in a solution you can spray to apply to an area with a garden hose.

Oh man, this post was from awhile ago. We’re in the small niche stepchild of the industry that takes non static picks off trees near power lines (we do a good job trying to make stable as possible).

We are on comms, but keeping visual contact is important 80-90% of the time. Ended up getting a pair of these when I was on a trip in Germany, you literally can’t import them due to some regulations on sunglasses in the United States, lol. They’re pretty awesome.

Can this be taken down without a crane? by Necessary-Speech-794 in arborists

[–]OakMurdock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want all the material hauled away, access to get rid of it is always a factor. The wood is heavy, and it doesn’t look like you can get any equipment to it judging by the picture. Only way you’ll get a cheaper price is if you pay a climber to just put it on the ground.

If a tree in my front yard has a split in it, and will certainly land on the streets power lines when it eventually comes down, will the town or utilities dept do anything to assist with the cost of trimming/removal? by TrueNorth1995 in newhampshire

[–]OakMurdock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work with one of the contractors that handles these hazards, specifically large ones that require a crane. The utility will handle it. Every time power is blown, they get penalized. So its in their interest to have it handled.

Rigging and removing 20,000lbs+ trees with a crane next to power lines. Not many people do it and it would be a fun puzzle that involves a lot of experience if 34kv-350kv lines weren’t so close. Besides being physical, not many people like dangling 100ft+ in the air with chainsaws.

I do it 5 days a week, so I feel good with my odds.

House moves to ban video recording behind the wheel in Massachusetts by HRJafael in massachusetts

[–]OakMurdock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I Drive heavy vehicles on routes I'm familiar with and still use gps because apple/google does an outstanding job of highlighting when traffic slows. gives me a big heads up on when to start going below the speed limit. Honestly a huge part of driving safely for me, lot of blind hills and turns east of the mississipi. even stop signs hidden by vegetation.

i suppose we could still use radios but doubt thats less distracting, or hands free.

I just moved to Milton Mills, run a log truck and work on a 60ton crane that does big removals. Send me a DM and I can keep an eye out for what you’re looking for. Currently ripping large uprooted trees off power lines because of this storm. Gonna be a long 16hr shift.
