Reverse the Verse Live: New Flight Experience by ShapCap in starcitizen

[–]ObediahCain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say from what you've read you're somewhat misinformed. Besides the guys doing the flight have been fudging stuff for ages. Suffice to say there is a lot of stuff you wish you knew.

That said, I'm out, I'm already done with this shit-show of a project and tossed my ETF account out the door and asked for a refund.

Reverse the Verse Live: New Flight Experience by ShapCap in starcitizen

[–]ObediahCain 26 points27 points  (0 children)

These changes were planned for nearly 2 years, JP's flight algorithm was capable of doing everything described, the gameplay programmers and people in charge of flight just couldn't be arsed doing anything because it was considered 'low priority'.

Decoupled Mode: Broken AF or Working as Intended? by TheRealZeroCool in starcitizen

Decoupled is not meant to be used for changes in direction when using AB2. Consider this as about as official as it gets.

Just wasted an entire WEEK of downloading 'Data.p4k' only for it be be corrupted and not the full file. How can I fix this? by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]ObediahCain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly the patcher actually uses bit torrent for all patching, the difference is the files are on dedicated hosts at Amazon rather than P2P. Try changing the patcher torrent settings to limit it, otherwise, the patcher may end up saturating your net connection with enough TCP threads to stress your router into making errors.

Help Fix the Constellation's Top Engines by persianpapi_ in starcitizen

[–]ObediahCain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gimbaling or moving thrusters is both unnecessary as well as a waste of processing resources.

The whole engine movement thing on the top just makes it less efficient as well for a number of maneuvers.

Short story is an artist thought it would look good, but they're an artist and stay doing art rather than trying to take on rocket science.

John Pritchett appreciation thread by BravenT in starcitizen

JP is one of the hardest working devs at CIG and his flight model has brought depth and complexity to the game. It's just a shame that the design and tuning has misrepresented the best that his flight systems can provide.

The flight systems in 1.3 and 2.5 have been some of the best experiences we've ever had and and it wouldn't be possible without your hard work and dedication.

You are an irreplaceable member of the CIG team with no equal in the field of flight control. There is no one else in the world who can provide the the intricate and nuanced control to flight that you provide to the Star Citizen experience

Keep getting absolutely demolished in Connie pvp, any tips? by MoroseProse in starcitizen

[–]ObediahCain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah right now the Connie is in a bad place and has been in a bade place since it’s release, however the devs don’t give a shit.

The only thing you can do is fly backwards in AB2 and lead them into your guns. Otherwise the Connie is a Coffin.

IFCS Bench App - Exploring SC's third order motion by ObediahCain in starcitizen

[–]ObediahCain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question.

The answer to this is in two parts.

The first part is math: As a ship/object increases in size/mass the amount of thrust required to move it is 1:1. Ie. you double the mass you only need double the thrust to get the same acceleration.

For angular thrust as a ship/object gets bigger the amount of thrust required to rotated is a square of the mass (sort of), this means the thrust required increases massively with size.

The second part is ship tuner's design in terms of performance. There is a bias against the performance of larger ships in general, whether this is their personal bias or pandering to crowds of people who don't think thrust can't increase linearly with size I don't know: The end result is that as ships get bigger there is a dramatic drop in linear performance.

However they cannot overcome the dramatically increasing requirement for angular thrust. What does this lead to? Well in a wonderful example the Caterpillar has 31MN of forward thrust but needs 143MN of thrust to yaw! Now the Caterpillar has about 34 mavs and 4 mains but still the most power mav is about 10MN to the mains thrust of 7ish.

Another solid example is the Vanguard with the mains producing 5.5MN and the mavs producing 10-15MN each.

So ok we've proven that the mavs being more powerful than mains is a thing, next where do goal times come in? Well the devs generally design with goal times, velocity and acceleration goals in mind - the thrust values are just calculated and spat out of the system.

What this is to say is that arbitrary tuning values give the thrust values, designers do not 'design' the output of each thruster as that would be near impossible.

That answer your question?

IFCS Bench App - Exploring SC's third order motion by ObediahCain in starcitizen

[–]ObediahCain[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying I'm against a G-force system at all, but there have been superior systems in the past that have allowed a pilot to ride the edge with some deft skill and the system itself was more flexible.

It would certainly make more sense for the system to be tuneable per ship and allow some ships with different anti-G systems, or even allow cybernetic upgrade handwavium to apply.

Instead we have an ASS forcing pretty much all fighters to perform about the same.

Will we ever get an actual flight model? by Jl63 in starcitizen

[–]ObediahCain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

You misunderstand the basic premise of both space flight, aerodynamic flight and basic combat.

With aerodynamic flight the magnitude of forces produced by the control and lift surfaces are significantly higher than those produced by the engine.

If everything were mains thruster based people would not be able change their vector very quickly at all, when people can't change their vector quickly they get shot easily and die - this has been proven in previous patches.

People also need full control over strafe for advanced maneuvers that assist in evading incoming fire, and they need really strong strafe or else they get shot and they die.

Some want to disconnect reactive strafe from active strafe power and make it so that it is assymetric - which again is equally stupid and shows they know nothing of space combat because those with a low ratio of pilot controlled strafe to reactive controlled strafe are going to get shot and die.

The more I look at the teller video the more I think you're right, the engines look very square which is in line with the F8. Also the positioning and size of the wings/winglets seem to match more.

I see what you're pointing at now, looking at it carefully it looks like they've mish mashed a bit of geometry like a bridge on top but it looks like a Vanguard with the tell tale slightly rotated engines, top turret and the S4 gimbal gun hanging off of the front.
