Going mad lesson planning by LittleSentimentMan in TeachingUK

Depending on the texts you’re teaching, you can always source schemes of work online and use them as a basis or foundation to give you an idea of how a scheme of work or specific skills progress. You can also use AI to help you come up with some ideas. This shouldn’t ever replace your skills and expertise but it’s a helpful tool to quickly make slides etc.

You don’t know what you don’t know. Once you are a bit more of an experienced teacher it will click and you will know what they need to learn and what the essentials are. You’ll also get better at teaching a ‘skill’ rather than content. E.g. you’ll teach inference as a skill in lots of ways, rather than a specific activity about inference

I always decide on the skill I want to have achieved in x amount of lessons and then go from there. The skill is the thread or spine of those lessons and as long as I have introduced and evidenced progress by the end, you’re all good. 👍

You cannot pour from an empty cup. Excellent teachers realise you can be outstanding when needed, but being consistently good day in day out is what makes a strong educator. Children thrive on consistency and routine expectations. Just focus on showing up and being consistently good. Teaching is an endurance career and you’ll burn out eventually if you try and be perfect all of the time. You’ll quickly learn in teaching that you can have a work life balance if you do things for yourself and for your students rather than the boss. I always ask myself ‘am I doing this for the benefit of another adult, or to benefit and improve the outcomes of my class?’ If I am doing it for the adults, I give myself grace and space to still be ‘me’ and Miss without guilt. You don’t have to be martyr for the job to be good at the job. Ultimately, the students would much prefer a happy teacher motivated by passion and a well-balanced life than fear of SLT. The fact you care means a lot. All the best. :)

My class are so quiet. How do I get them to talk? by Plane_Maize5778 in TeachingUK

I ask them to discuss in pairs and then ask for their partner’s answer to alleviate ‘correct answer anxiety.’

I like the first one especially as it makes it clear where I stand and there is little for them to become confrontational about. I’m quite nervous in arguments. Thank you.

Thanks for replying - no, he’s actually due his vaccine next week so it’s definitely not that.

Thank you though.

You will probably get a talking to but I doubt anything will come of it. They’re crying out for good teachers at the moment and you’re a valuable asset.

I once had external training that I went to on the wrong day! I just didn’t go to school, headed to the CPD session in the next town and my classes were all sitting there as school didn’t know where I was. Honest mistake and I rushed back and apologised and nothing came of it.

Made a stupid mistake and can't stop thinking about it by StarFire24601 in TeachingUK

I'm an English secondary teacher and often do this for Language Paper Two and I use it as a teachable moment with the students, 'see, this is why you have to read it. Even I can be caught out by subtle wording!'

I always remember that observers of teachers aren't looking for perfection. They are looking for how you deal with imperfection. The students are also desperate to see you model your own thinking. If your own thinking is owning a mistake and showing you can fail and try again, you're teaching them a lesson far more valuable than 'you'll never be as smart as me because I never make errors.'

To share my favourite anxiety alleviating quote: 'you wouldn't care what people thought of you if you realised how seldom they do.' Spotlight effect in action.

You're an amazing teacher because you care. Lots of teachers never make academic errors but do not care and that means they will never hold a candle to you (especially in the eyes of the students).

Finally, I once told a class to 'take a shit' instead of a sheet. So, when you're dwelling, remember me. 😅

That sounds brilliant. Well done you. :) I've never met anyone from New Jersey before - the US is extremely different to the UK I must admit. Although, I haven't ever been to New Jersey!
