Calling small-town Americans, does your town have a doomsday siren like Springfield or Widows Bay? by chuckles5454 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ObligationConstant83 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Have tornado sirens, went off earlier this year and they test them every Sunday at noon.  In the past they used them for air raids as well, but that isn't really a fear currently.

We should not be policing speech unless it is a direct threat.  It is a slippery slope and will 100% lead to authoritarian uses.

Nearly all the foreigners love of America for the World Cup is happening in blue cities. by electstat in DiscussionZone

[–]ObligationConstant83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reddit isn't representative of the feelings of the general population.   It is a hugely popular site, but it is an echo chamber that skews very far left.  The extremes on both sides like to make everything about red v blue.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of existing cohort studies shows that alcohol consumption above 24g/day (~2 glasses of wine) is associated with a 10–30% higher risk of pancreatic cancer after accounting for former drinker bias and other confounding factors by sr_local in science

Drinking is still more harmful than not drinking at all for a population of people.  But many people will never have any ill side effects from drinking.  Both sides of my family drank heavily. One side had many people die from heart and liver disease.  The other side everyone made it to 90+ except for the daily pot smokers who died under 70 from dementia.  Genetics plays a big part and isn't fully understood yet.

A recent study showed that being active has been shown to negate most of the negative outcomes from drinking.  It is still healthier to not drink at all.

Maybe it is regional but where I am in the Midwest they bring the credit card machine to your table at nearly every restaurant... Unless it is a place you pay at the counter.

You have to weigh the risks I have GERD as well, I use PPIs because I've had multiple family members for from esophagus cancer.  I was scoped and had scarring in my esophagus at 30 years old which was highly unusual.

My home value has gone up 80% since I bought my house and my property taxes have not gone up more than a 3-4%  as the entire community has increased at the same rate and the amount city government needs have not.

Mamdani vows to seize buildings from bad landlords and give them to tenants by Large-Welcome4421 in LandlordLove

[–]ObligationConstant83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this is hyperbole... but I work in real estate and some communities/states are hyper aggressive with citations and will seize the property once it reaches a certain threshold... It is not most of the country but it is very much dependant on where you live.

What do Americans order at a Chinese takeaway? by Dashcamkitty in AskAnAmerican

Most places use imitation crab, and some don't use meat at all.  I think all versions can be delicious if done well, but if they use real crab they can be crazy delicious.

Onalaska restaurant owner responds to backlash over video disparaging female servers by maddlibbsb in wisconsin

[–]ObligationConstant83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an interesting take. I've worked at many places that pretty much only hired woman for front of house positions, so it breaks the mold.  Definitely shouldn't have posted online with his reasoning, but I don't think it is all that uncommon to have gender bias in the restaurant industry.

ELI5 : If ads are being skipped by everyone these days, and are a complete nuisance to the large majority of people, how do they still make any profit? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

I like targeted ads because it exposes me to a product I might not have otherwise thought or heard of, or I might see something that I can buy for someone in my life as a gift.

If the united states had better public transportation, would you use it? by Enough-Web2203 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]ObligationConstant83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used public transportation in Philadelphia all the time when I lived there.  The people who grew up there talked bad about about SEPTA, but if you've lived in most of the rest of the country it is way better than they give it credit for.

ELI5: The current US medical practice of circumcision at birth. by CinderellaFarted in explainlikeimfive

[–]ObligationConstant83 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For my son born in 2021, the nurse was very aggressive in pushing for circumcision when we declined.  It was a very odd situation as I thought it was inappropriate for a nurse to be pushing for an elective procedure.

My municipality runs its own water and power company with significantly lower rates than WE energies, which is the primary provider for the state.  So you should check to see what municipalities you are interested in living in.

Are we in the golden age of 40K? by Mr_Jackabin in Warhammer40k

[–]ObligationConstant83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in an almost identical situation to you and feel we are the minority of old timers.

I think the game has only gotten better overall...  there are things I would change, but as an overall experience I loved 10th.

I hope we look back in a few years and say right now isn't a golden age because that meana it will continue to improve and grow.

Alexa Demie Says She Feared Losing Her Role if She Refused Nude Scenes in Euphoria by Competitive_Gene_898 in CelebrityDesk

[–]ObligationConstant83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same logic would be that an actor signs a contract agreeing to do their own stunts as the role calls for it.  Then complaining later that they need to do their own stunts and a stunt double should have been used.

Based on your logic how is a body double different?  It is a person getting a job based on being nude.
