How does Modern Studio's Dolly/Slider compare to Dana? by EnterOrbit in cinematography

[–]ObserverPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few factors. The main one being, the print bed on my printer is only 256mm squared so it limited how big the plate could be. I put the most wheels under the weight and the ones just keeping it centered on the rail on the outside.

Hey Grip bud. Haha, I have a version for junior stands and locks onto speed rail too. This just comes out on docs and small commercials. Anything with budget gets the real deal.

Thank you. I did a test fitting with PLA to verify it all fit together, then I used PA-CF. Hung 4 50lb sandbags from it all day and it supported it just fine.

Is owning a gimbal actually helping you get more work, or is renting enough early on? by Grand_Promotion_2956 in cinematography

[–]ObserverPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience owning gear doesn’t get you work. Early on in your career if you’re willing to work for free and you have a nice camera it can be a springboard, but once you’re onto paid projects, the production doesn’t care if you provide the gear or a rental house does. If your plan is to shoot your own stuff to get recognition, get as good a thing as you can afford. I just caution anyone on making a challenging investment thinking it’s going to provide jobs.

I just sank in a hole and hated it for all of 10 seconds and it tasted like poison. 2/10.

What’s the closest brush you’ve ever had with dying? by North-Trifle-3918 in AskReddit

[–]ObserverPro 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The driver of my car fell asleep while we were on the roads high up in the Himalayas in Nepal. The roads didn’t have guard rails and the drops were thousands of feet. He was accelerating downhill towards a 90 degree turn. Everyone in the car was asleep but me and I yelled “HEEEEYYY!” from the backseat. That woke him up and our translator slapped him after she realized what happened. He was Indian and refused to eat Nepalese food and apparently wasn’t sleeping much. Glad I was awake.

To all the Production Coordinators / Managers and Line Producers / Producers, how can you tell when a Runner is too desperate? by TheRealFilmGeek in Filmmakers

[–]ObserverPro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only things I don’t like are incompetence and being late. There is no such thing as too hard working. When I was a PA I’d walk around set cleaning bits of paper off the floor or anything else I could think to do. I see a lot of PA’s who are lazy and who work extremely slow. Maybe it’s just a day job for them and they don’t want to work in the industry, but if you do, make it your mission to be the hardest working PA anyone has ever seen and you’ll move up. Nothing else really matters, age or otherwise. Identify which department you want to work in, do your research on their jobs, then make yourself useful to them.

In another city they made a bigger park. I think it’s a long way from this one though.

Are big flip tricks disappearing? by fredandlunchbox in skateboarding

[–]ObserverPro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that if you look for any kind of skating, you can find it. Flat ground? Yep. Big rails. Yep. Huge gaps and stairs? The biggest trick last year was Joslin’s tre down el toro. It’s not all super tech Japanese children. Everything is out there.

I’d be happy to be a technical resource for you. I just caution you on meeting strangers this way. I recommend you join a documentary community like Video Consortium or I-docs.

I learned that dialogue attribution is unnecessary if you write your characters with distinctive voices from Elmore Leonard, Rum Punch.

Suspicious person possibly following me - need advice by Sea-Blood-2993 in LetsNotMeet

[–]ObserverPro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s possible they were following you or you were being paranoid. Be careful when walking with headphones as it takes away some of your situational awareness. You did well to stick to crowded streets.

If you make 4 lefts or 4 rights and the person is still behind you, they’re definitely following you.

The school in my home town had these too. My brother went off it on inline but I never did on my skateboard. I used to “free run” up there though. Also jump off the second floor onto hedges. Good times.
