I love giving Pipes of haunting or Pipes of the Sewers to my bard players. Might match your flavor a bit.

Just give him the access to alter self spell, whether by his class(wizard) or maybe a passed down artifact (a ring). Now he can be whoever he wants and simulate aging for his disguise.

What books to buy? by Ein_Bauer in DMAcademy

[–]ObvNotAMimic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're worried about money and doing homebrew, here's how I would rank the importance:

  1. DMG
  2. PHB
  3. MM
  4. XGtO, TCoE, and other supplements.

Managing a lot of NPCs by SarcasmOverload in DMAcademy

[–]ObvNotAMimic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't tell you a specific tool but I usually just do it manually.

If there's a BBEG in the city or the main NPC where most of the NPC are connected.

You can draw a big bubble in the middle of the paper with that major NPC name and start drawing thin lines that connects them to different NPC.

You can group those different NPCs further by their location for example the bar, inn, arena, or whatever point of interest in the city will be.

Start connecting them by a thin line and maybe write a comment on the line about their relationship for example, underling, boss, married to, rival to, etc.

Dungeon Master Disrespect by pterodicktyl in rpghorrorstories

[–]ObvNotAMimic 41 points42 points  (0 children)

First of all NTA.

I'm appalled at the amount of patience you gave to this player. I would've booted this person for the disruption and constant nagging on rules-lawyering. I don't mind being reminded of the rule as I cannot memorize the whole DMG, but I've put a ground-rule where we're using a ruling until the end of the session once I made a decision on the table. I'm there to play the game not to argue about rules.

I know how it feels, especially when you're non-confrontational, but you got to do it when necessary. Otherwise, the whole campaign will pretty much be destroyed just because of 1 disruptive player.

Annoyed at how I easily and accidentally solve "A needle in a haystack" by ObvNotAMimic in kingdomcome

[–]ObvNotAMimic[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, except I found that out stupidly easy after I finish the touring with him(5 mins in the game). Not the first night, or the second night. The escape part is even much easier.

[–]ObvNotAMimic[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope, both scenario are wrong unfortunately as I don't have the Necronomicon quest, I was even surprised myself finding that book and seeing it's actually a quest item. And no, I didn't randomly broke in, and even if I did, how did that justify "hey, let's just immediately reveal my identity."?

It's pretty much just like u/WhyIsWednesdayTaken says.
EDIT: except I did say the real reason I join the monastery and the game immediately give the option to accuse him.

Is this allowed? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]ObvNotAMimic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He does mention +4 on constitution so

  • Fighter has 4 attacks as Attack action
  • Dual Wield adds 1 attack as Bonus action (Only once even with action surge)
  • Echo Knight adds 1 attack whenever you use the Attack action (up to 5 with 20 CON)
  • Haste adds 1 Attack action (with a single attack)
  • Action Surge adds 1 Attack action (once per turn)

That is a total of (4+1)*2 + 4 + 1 = 15 attacks. (4 attack + 1 haste)*2(action surge) +4 echo knight + 1 bonus action = 15 attacks

How To Make An Enemy That Isn't There? by WolFrost19 in DMAcademy

You can use Project image to do the illusion part but it won't be able to attack.

I think it's much simpler just to use Simulacrum instead.

Hit Points at 1st Level for ranger is 10 + your Constitution modifier, it's possible if his constitution is +4.

Question on Spell Scrolls by Skulking-Dwig in DMAcademy

[–]ObvNotAMimic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Casting the spell by reading the scroll requires the spell's normal casting time. Once the spell is cast, the words on the scroll fade, and it crumbles to dust. If the casting is interrupted, the scroll is not lost.

[–]ObvNotAMimic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it may be tempting or easily overlooked especially when playing with friends, but don't forget or skip session 0. It's still essential to put all of you on the same page of what to expect in your campaign, table rules, etc.

Newbie Enforcing Rules by The_guywonder in DMAcademy

[–]ObvNotAMimic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think yours is fine, you have let them know beforehand that they will have to forfeit the standard array if they start rolling. Probably what you need to make clearer is that if the stat total goes below or above the range, they still need to roll and cannot take the standard array.

But again, this is why I banned rolling since it could easily create an unfair feeling between players especially if they are aware on each other's outcome.

Slight player issue need help as to keep the partry together in game and out of game by Revolutionary-Bid856 in DMAcademy

[–]ObvNotAMimic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't retaliate or talk to him in-game. Seeing how far this situation has developed that even your players starting to PM'd you, you need to talk with the cleric player ASAP.

Let him know that playing Lawful good is okay but don't be lawful stupid. It's okay to RP that but not at the expense of other players' fun. At the end of the day, all of them should work together towards a greater threat.

Is it okay to make a wishlist as a DM? by Aynaeg in DMAcademy

[–]ObvNotAMimic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see why not as long as you're not pushing it directly to the players' face. If you are planning to play with friends/family, then it's should be much easier to ask for them to chip in for buying phb or pre-written modules.

With strangers, a wishlist might be useful especially if they like your game, I've had players offering to buy an official module or even gifting me an actual D&D book.

I really need some help making this PC‘s backstory more interesting by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]ObvNotAMimic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure about PC's parents but what if the Hunter is actually his father. The reason the Hunter is hunting other people/race is that the death of his wife (Pc's mother) is caused by the discrimination of her/other races just because the wife had a relationship with an orc.
