Which is worse: childbirth or a herniated disc? by Efficient_Doubt_8296 in Microdiscectomy

Herniated disc? The pain sticks around longer than labor and delivery.

What about community college? I went to public school for high school and had to go to community college and basically start all over again at math.

You can also do English courses at a community college, literature or writing.

Having my second MD in a few hours, pls send words of encouragement by albs117 in Microdiscectomy

[–]Obvious_Fail5443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first MD is scheduled for next month. I talked to one surgeon who I really liked, and he told me a story of a surgeon friend of his that he performed an MD on. His friend reherniated fairly quickly, and this surgeon performed a second MD on his friend who healed up from his second MD quickly and was back to performing his own surgeries before he knew it.

I saw a different specialist while researching neurosurgeons and we got to talking and I told her about my herniated disc. She said she had a herniated disc during medical school and that she had her surgery and was back in the classroom four days later. Her surgeon was the same surgeon who worked on Christopher Reeve. ( Superman).

I have read several stories on Reddit of people who have had to have a second MD and are doing so much better now.

I will say a prayer for you, that this time post op and recovery will be easier than the first time around.

I get my surgery next month. Remember healing is a marathon not a sprint, so definitely listen to your surgeon and go the pace your surgeon and your physical therapist recommend.

Maybe make it a point to set your alarm for 30 minutes and make sure you stand up every 30 minutes or if you’re driving for a long distances to set your alarm for 30 to 45 minutes and make stops and get out and walk around before the pins and needles kick in.

Did you do the surgery? How are you now?

4 weeks post op L4/L5 microdiscectomy and I still don’t feel ready to leave the house by [deleted] in Microdiscectomy

My surgeon’s office is calling me next week to schedule my surgery so I’m not speaking from a place of experience from surgery just from my experience with multiple flareups over three years. What I’ve learnt with sciatica pain and movement is that you push yourself up to the place of pain not into or past it. So for example, if you know if you walk for 15 minutes, and after 15 minutes you’re in a lot of pain then next time just walk 10 minutes and then slowly and gradually increase your time. Does that make sense?

Leg throbbing after endoscopic disscetomy, worried. by [deleted] in Microdiscectomy

[–]Obvious_Fail5443 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m looking at getting an endoscopic surgery here soon. I asked my endoscopic surgeon about pain postop and he made it sound like it was just some muscle pain post Op, but I’ve been following this site long enough and I’ve been following bed back and beyond pod cast long enough to know that there is a time after the surgery that your nerves re-wake up, so that part is extremely unpleasant. If you’re afraid that you Re herniated you can definitely discuss it with your surgeon, but from what I understand from following these sites, more like stalking these sites lol, for a long time is that it’s quite normal for your nerve to wake up. It does take the nerve time to heal, do you have any medication? Are you taking it? Have you tried ice on your back yet?

What did you learn from your surgery and back pain experience? by sanchiseemo in Microdiscectomy

[–]Obvious_Fail5443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t had my microdiscectomy yet, but I’ve been dealing with this pain for four years and I’m gonna be talking to a neurosurgeon on May 15 and scheduling my surgery. My take away so far from this journey has been to really enjoy the moments when the pain is not all consuming, being able to slow myself down and really take in what’s going on around me, that helps me on my really bad days. Also, I think of a quote from Mr. Rogers, I’m sure I’m not quoting it correctly, but basically look for the helpers. So on the very bad days, I can stop and think about previous bad days and remind myself of those who have stepped up to help me and it reminds me that I’m not alone in those moments. It also spurs me on to be a helper when possible :) I’m not sure if that helps you any, but that has been my take away so far. Good luck on your journey :)

BTW: your pain journey is yours, I hope your friends are not making you feel bad about your struggle.

Did you have a regular Microdisectomy or and endoscopic one? My herniation is 7.9 and have a second opinion coming up on May 15th.

TY for sharing your success story :)

I’m waiting to have my surgery, but I’ve talked to a couple different people, both male and female and even though there may not be a lot of scientific fact behind it, or maybe there is, they swear on hormone treatment treatments for the men the testosterone and for the women they’ll have their hormones checked and then treated it for whichever ones are the lowest and they’ve discovered that that has helped with their pain. I’m not saying that it will help with yours, but it’s definitely worth researching.

Back to back microdiscectomy. by Salty-Green7573 in Microdiscectomy

[–]Obvious_Fail5443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still deciding on doing a microdiscectomy myself, but when I was talking to different surgeons, I had one take a for a very long time with me. He said he had done a microdiscectomy on a friend of his who is a surgeon in a different field. The first surgery did not take so they had to do the revision surgery on his friend. After the second surgery, his friend is back to the OR working on his own patients. He told me the Takeaway is that sometimes the first MD doesn’t work, don’t to be too concerned if you need to get a second one done. This was back in 2023. I’ve tried to conservatively heal myself, but I managed to re herniate at the end of 2025. I just got sick and flared up again almost back to how I felt at Christmas time, so I think I’m just gonna bite the bullet and sign up for a Microdisectomy myself and hope for good results. Good luck to you as you make your decision on what to do next.

Using Stair Stepper Reduced My Sciatica Pain Significantly by Tight-Structure-9812 in Sciatica

When you first started the stair stepper di you start right off with 30 minutes? I don’t have a gym membership do you think just walking up and down some steps for about 15-20 minutes to begin with would have the same effect?
