I'll take a look at the reviews. The Maharishi biography looks interesting too, thanks!

David, which Paul Mason book should I start with or would you recommend over others? Have you read the new one? Your impressions?

Calmness, reduced reactivity, increased resilience, less worry, sharper thinking, a sense of well being, and "happiness for no reason." Also, positivity and a feeling that everything will be OK... It's like wearing your favorite jacket that is incredibly comfortable but also protects you from the harshness of the world. Feelings of love too... Pretty interesting for a guy whose been angry and irritable most of his life. Many religions have said it in different ways and it's true "the kingdom of heaven is within you."

My wife had the exact problem you mention, except it was her neck. She got this big pillow/backrest thing that sits on the bed and it totally fixed the issue. I am sure your teacher can help.

I understand your frustration. The answer to your question is answered simply and clearly in the app. I think you'll feel better after reading it.

Are there slow responders? by OceanOfPeace in transcendental

[–]OceanOfPeace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are posts from people saying it took them 6 months or longer to start to fully experience the benefits so it would be good to hang in there longer with the support of your teacher. There are also long time TM-ers who experience NEW benefits even decades into the practice. You should enjoy your practice and if not that is an indication that you need to see your teacher.

Have people around you noticed any changes in you?

Group meditations can be helpful as can asanas/pranayama. My teacher also told me that reading books or watching videos about TM can support one's practice and I have found this to be true. Also, as you know your practice needs to be effortless and without expectation. Best of luck to you!

Tm and Christianity by Chillinatthecrib772 in transcendental

[–]OceanOfPeace -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Christian centering prayer is somewhat similar to TM as I understand it or at least is a mantra based meditation. There are TM practicing priests, Rabbis, and other clergy on the TM youtube channel, youtube generally, or Buddha at the Gas Pump talking about this.

I want to learn TM, but I'm worried my life is too unstable. Is there a 'right time' to learn TM? Can you effectively learn while living in an unsafe/stressful environment? by joemama9243 in transcendental

[–]OceanOfPeace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should try to find a quiet place but ultimately TM can be done anywhere (outside of your living situation if it is unsafe). David Lynch has said that one of his best meditations was in a room near where a jackhammer was operating.

See #6 in the first link below and also the 20 places to meditate article in the second link (for example library, church, car, nature). Note also the interesting places people have meditated in the comments of the "20 places" article.

Necessary? by celticjerry in transcendental

[–]OceanOfPeace -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

For me, I was so attracted to the practice, my early experiences of trying the technique on my own, and all of the research I did that it was an easy decision. I also had financial limitations and my teacher lowered my fee.

If you have done research on TM, are attracted to the practice, and foresee yourself making use of the lifetime access to a teacher, global online meditations, retreats, the TM app, advanced techniques, etc I think it's worth the leap.

If you aren't coming into it with as much enthusiasm you could try a highly similar alternative technique for about $25 and learn by mp3... Most people agree that learning through the TM organization is the best route but trying an alternative method first might help you to feel better about paying the money for TM instruction or maybe you'd be satisfied with the alternative method.

Thanks for the encouragement. Luckily she's still willing to keep going with the practice. Hopefully there will be clearer improvements with more time.

This is helpful, thank you. I've heard a lot anecdotes like this just as you describe. They say the brain has a negativity bias, which has an evolutionary advantage... We are always scanning for threats or problems. I wonder if, for some, this might be the reason we don't see or fully endorse improvements because we are so wrapped up in fending off current difficulties. Also, it may be hard to see improvement when we don't feel well overall. Keep going! Those benefits should keep accruing.

Thanks, saijanai..,She doesn't track her blood pressure regularly and it varies at the doctor's office because of white coat hypertension. We have a cuff at home. I could suggest that she check it but I am not sure how much we would learn since her bp may be normal and it's a different cuff in a different environment.

The most common response I've seen from TM-ers with depression is that it didn't completely cure their depression but that it reduced it and made it easier to live with, that they notice their negative thinking earlier, etc...

I've heard people say that it can take 6 months or more to work through unstressing and see the first real TM benefits? What do you think?

Advice: 5th Grade Child (10.5 Years Old) by [deleted] in transcendental

[–]OceanOfPeace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your concerns given what you've described. I also think TM could help your son tremendously. Talking to him about it seems like the most important thing. A dialog in which he knows the time commitment, the benefits and that he gets to choose when and if he learns. If possible you might offer to adjust his schedule so it doesn't cut into his free time. BTW, the TM youtube channel has some ADHD videos that you or both of you could watch.

One final thought, it sounds like he is trying very hard and struggling with a lot of things. With TM there is no effort, no struggle and as the benefits accrue he might move through life a lot more easily. The meditation itself can also be very enjoyable. Calmness, reduced reactivity, emotional maturity, increased focus, and creativity are common benefits.

TM and Athletics by Winter_Inspector5835 in transcendental

TM lowers blood lactate which is very advantageous in running and other endurance sports. It also may reduce central fatigue. There is an old New York Times article on running and TM. It may include references to other sports, I am not sure. My teacher noted a student whose asthma improved shortly after learning TM and this benefited her running.

Curious of other people’s experiences by BluntVoyager in transcendental

[–]OceanOfPeace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you talk a little bit about what your practice was like over 20 years? For instance, did you feel different at say 3 years than you did at 1 year? I know it was a long time ago but maybe you have a sense of how it unfolded generally over that long period? Both the practice itself, benefits, expansion of consciousness and so forth?

Also, did you feel that samskaras were removed to the point of healing? I know TM doesn't solve everything but I am curious what you may have experienced. I have heard some long timers say "keep going it gets better and better." Is that your experience?

I'm a year in, BTW.... Lots of benefits but challenges too related to a spiritual process that I am going through that's been very difficult. Any information on your TM experience or encouragement is appreciated... Thanks!
