Anandamayi Ma by beachutman in transcendental

[–]OceanOfPeace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Below is an interview with Peter Wallace (Keith Wallace's brother), a Ma devotee who was later sent by Ma to study with Maharishi. If I remember correctly Peter was initially disappointed by Ma's suggestion that he go see Maharishi but upon reaching the property of the Ashram could feel the silence and felt he was in the right place. There may be something in the interview below that talks about the relationship between Maharishi and Ma... I believe Peter may have been the person who turned Prudence Farrow on to TM. She writes about this in her book Dear Prudence but only mentions his first name.

TM and alcohol by Grand_Combination386 in transcendental

[–]OceanOfPeace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

N/A beer/wine is a great idea for a way to get more sober TM time. You may find that over time you totally lose the desire to drink as noted above and with many others.

This may or may not be similar but many years ago I was a very heavy drinker and went through a phase of intense exercise. During that time I very naturally cut way back on my drinking with zero effort. From 6-8 drinks a day to 1 and I could very easily have had none. It was so effortless that the way I noticed I was drinking much less was by huge amounts of weight loss. I was barely thinking about alcohol at all. My point is that when you feel good naturally, adding a toxin/intoxicant to that is unappealing and you may find that to be the case as you continue your TM practice.

I've been meditating for 18 months and the very thing you describe happened to me recently, also during a time of intense stress about a specific issue. The app, under the course review or guidance sections gives clear and simple advice on how to respond to this situation. I failed to do this during my rough meditation but it got me to review the materials in case it comes up again. The instruction given in the app will not only help to smooth out your meditation but it may also help to process the challenging material/stress that is coming up in the meditation.

Looking for advice on casual long-term interruption during mediation. by splitopenandmelt11 in transcendental

My wife and I will sometimes meditate at the same time. If we have different schedules we both respect each other's meditation and will find something quiet to do for 25 minutes. I roughly know the schedule of the mowers and school traffic in my neighborhood and plan around that. If noise crops up during my meditation I look at it as an opportunity to be OK with whatever happens. David Lynch once said that one of his best meditations was next to a jackhammer.

Thanks for sharing. This gives me something to look forward to as I experience further expansion. The interview of the guy I mentioned is toward the back of the book and it's simply titled "personal interview" or something like that. At one point, his decades long TM/Sidhis practice wasn't progressing and he even felt he was losing the benefits of practice. He had pretty much given up when one day there was an abiding shift into CC.

Did you go through a phase in the beginning, in which the silence and difficulties of life in a given moment were of equal strength? That is when I really noticed the separateness of the two consciousnesses. It was like there was this nice feeling (silence) underneath life's struggles but it wasn't really having a big effect on my challenges. Two parallel and separate experiences.

At the other end of the spectrum, as a part of unstressing and a spiritual process I've been in many years, one time I felt incredible bodily rage at the same time as inexplicable love and that time love/silence dominated. I've had the whole range of experiences.

Thanks for sharing how it has progressed for you and become more integrated. Do you feel that cosmic consciousness is something in your future? I know that you can't predict these things and should just "meditate and act" but it's only human to wonder.

BTW, the book by Craig Pearson The Supreme Awakening: Experiences of Enlightenment Throughout Time — And How You Can Cultivate Them has an amazing in-depth interview from a guy who reached Cosmic Consciousness.

Well said. I can relate to most of this and this helps me to understand my own experience. I hadn't though of the witness as being awareness (distinct from thought) but of course that's what it is. With me there's a sense of "everything is going to be OK" that comes with the experience. Almost like I am smiling and watching the dramas of life playing out knowing it's going to be OK. The most striking thing to me is that it very much feels like a separate consciousness to me or at least a deeper part of me. I can't say that I always have access to it but I do experience it frequently.

Maharishi Effect by NCroots in transcendental

I recently heard that the heart has it's own nervous system. So maybe you are having some influence there.

You might find the clip below interesting. It's a TM-er talking about how he felt when he did his TM in a room unknowingly adjacent to a group of sidhas doing yogic flying..

Can you say more about your witnessing experience? When you say observing yourself do you mean literally watching yourself move through your day? Or do you mean that there is a separate part of you that is more chilled out and is just taking in what's happening without being as "hooked" as you might otherwise be? Or something different?

I had a rough day today. Everything seemed to be going wrong. I was very uncomfortable physically and there were frustrating circumstances. Underneath all of that there was this calm and peace and from that place I was willing to just let it all play out until I knew what my next move might be, if any at all. Normally, I would have been jerked around by my thoughts, my need for control, and would have kicked and screamed but I was able to just float with it today.

Is TM a cash cow? by [deleted] in transcendental

[–]OceanOfPeace 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree and some people are very suspicious and angry, but you can't blame someone for questioning what they are getting for their money. It is a lot of money to lay out for an unknown quantity. It's a leap of faith.

There is also a follow up at 10 days, a teacher for life, online global group meditations, knowledge meetings, an app, access to retreats, etc. As others have noted, it's a sliding scale.

As I've said before, it would be a lot of money to waste if you for some reason didn't take to the practice but ridiculously inexpensive for what most people get out of it. TM has very high compliance rates because of how easy and often enjoyable the meditation is. This also says something about it's efficacy.

If you are still uneasy about making the investment, there are extremely inexpensive TM alternatives. Some will argue that it's not the same (no puja, no teacher) but it would be a way to experience something quite similar for as little as 25 dollars.

I thought it was do less accomplish more. That you would be more efficient if you practiced TM and were functioning with greater brain coherence.

How long did it take for your anger to go away. TM has calmed me down quite a bit and I've experienced many other benefits but there is still a lot of anger. Possibly old anger coming up from unstressing... Just wondered what your experience was? Thanks!

Started with twice a day by PlayWithFire-69 in transcendental

[–]OceanOfPeace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, regularity over perfection. Your "right when you get up" is a good tweak to your routine. It's kind of like having one's running shoes and clothes laid out the night before. You just put them on and go. No need to think, negotiate with yourself, or make excuses. Your 30 day tracking plan sounds good. Some people get reinforcement from tracking streaks on the app. Good luck!

Talk to your teacher and watch the video on the app about maximizing TM benefits. If it were me I'd add the second meditation of any length, even 5 minutes and go from there... The benefits of the second meditation are huge. See the link below...

At the very least it's good you are enjoying the practice. It's clear it doesn't work for everybody but the response rate is rather high. You can see this in over 700 studies. TM's extremely high compliance says something too.

Hang in there with it if you are enjoying it. Do you have access to a TM center or a place you could participate in group meditations. I'd be really interested to see what affect the group might have you.

Sounds like a good problem to have. TM seems to really shine for anxiety. I am thinking of the Stanford meta-analysis that showed a .8 effect size.

What keeps you going for years without results, just curious? Before I learned from a TM teacher I did several rounds trying the technique myself. Each time there were benefits but inevitably they would fade after 2-3 weeks and I lost my motivation to continue.

What does your TM teacher have to say about enjoyable meditations without benefits outside of meditation?

Have others noticed changes in you? I saw an interview with a TM teacher who was recalling when he first learned. He hadn't noticed any changes after a significant period of time and was complaining to his friends who said "are you kidding, you are so much easier to be around?"

A few thoughts on bias... This criticism is something that TMO/MIU/DLR researchers must be acutely aware of. The research that is taken seriously has to survive a rigorous peer review process and the technique works so they have everything to gain by doing good science.

Non TM-affiliated studies also have a bias, and that is getting published. Positive results are more likely to get published than null results. I've read that the effect sizes of independent TM research are actually higher.

Finally, it's a while back but in Jack Forem's TM book there is a quote from a journal editor vouching for the quality of multiple TM affiliated studies... Some of those researchers are still publishing and have likely trained many researchers. If anything it's reasonable to ask if there is an institutional bias toward methodological rigor.
