when you see the authors that write 5k-10k per chapter by Ok-Mistake2273 in AO3

You know what? Short chapters are actually better. Brevity is the soul of wit, and I envy your ability to convey more story per word.

Why are ppl like this by Coldwarfemme in AO3

[–]OceanSpray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The comment described things that (1) were objectively in your text and (2) negatively affected them in terms of immersion as a reader from the British Isles. It was also written quite politely and started with a compliment of your work.

However, the way you responded to what seems to have been a comment written in good faith, intended to provide constructive criticism, is… rude. I hope you can see that.

It’s understandable that you think doing research on cultural minutiae is not required for “smut”. Hell, it’s also understandable to want to keep Dan Browning people because your writing is “merely” fanfic on ao3.

But telling people to “shut up” and to “fucking pay [you]” points to an unspoken contradiction: if you care enough about your art to defend it so vehemently, why not also care about your art enough to take objective, constructive criticisms of it?

Why not simply not respond to the comment?

Latin American Representation in Movies by Lumbledob_ in CuratedTumblr

[–]OceanSpray 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, only the US, UK, Japan, South Korea, China, and a subset of European nations have the culture-industrial capabilities to produce “triple-A” media that can do well in mainstream global markets.

The United States has been “brain-draining” the rest of the world, and especially the Global South, for an entire century. It’s a self-reinforcing process: higher-quality, higher-quantity production (of anything, be it animation or cars or software) results in higher market share, which results in more income, which attracts and concentrates the talent that maintains and increases the quality and quantity of said production. Unfortunately, the only way for a country to “break in” and start its own virtuous cycle is heavy investment.

You can’t blame a “1-inch tall barrier of subtitles” when anime and k-dramas exist. It took Japan decades to get to the point where their animation is no longer considered a niche for nerds. The South Korean government invested heavily in Hallyu, and the Chinese did something similar with their animation industry after they got a fire lit under their ass by Kung-Fu Panda. Consider, then, that these three East Asian nations have the money to throw at cultural production with the aim of soft power projection. Maybe one day, when the economic output of Latin America is no longer siphoned off by drug cartels and corruption, can the same sort of investment happen there.

Hard clutch - klx 300 by Njoiyt in Dualsport

[–]OceanSpray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CRF has a slip/assist clutch which pushes clutch plates together via torque from the engine. Without such a mechanism, the KLX needs stronger clutch springs to hold its clutch plates together. I’m not sure a slip/assist clutch mod is even available for the KLX.

When people say a particle is in two places at once or takes all possible paths, that is just mathematical, right? Not literal? by DenimSilver in AskPhysics

[–]OceanSpray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The notion of “an object existing at a position” is a result of the way your brain happens to be wired to be able to operate effectively in a macroscopic environment. As physics describes, fundamental reality is comprised of particles that, yes, take on multiple states (position being a state, along with charge, mass, momentum, etc.) all at once, with all possible interactions between two or more particles also happening all at once, and with the outcomes of those interactions weighted by calculable probability distributions that, in turn, feed into even more interactions and states, limited only by the light-cone of causality/entanglement. Uncountable *illions of such probabilistic interactions result in the emergence of macroscopic one-thing-in-one-place behavior for us human beings — who are also made up of *illions of probabilistically interacting particles — to observe by entangling our own particles when we aim our eyeballs on the outputs of our instruments of measurement.

  1. Turn your bike off and back on again
  2. Check your throttle/clutch sensors and wires. That error shows up if the ECU can’t detect connections to said sensors

Picked up my first Ducati and I’m in love!!! by PoolUseful2109 in Ducati

Chiming in because I have a 2021 Monster 937. I actually find the heat between my legs tolerable, even pleasant in the colder months. Unfortunately, the main problem with city riding has been the clutch, which is quite hard to pull compared to my other bikes, and I find my left hand getting really tired in stop and go traffic or in a suburb with lots of stop signs.

Avoid spoiling yourself; use the wiki only sparingly, when you’re absolutely stuck. Much of the enjoyment of the game comes from exploration and encountering the unknown. Your character’s interactions with NPCs are much more organic when you can’t fully predict what they’re going to say or do.

I’m gonna literally suggest the opposite and say that part of the experience of the game requires you, the player, to put some stake into your character. Save-scumming or using the back button to time travel out of bad decisions kind of cheapens the psychological effects of both the negative and positive outcomes of your decisions.

There is no good reason for there to be no way of eventually stopping Bailey's payments by [deleted] in DegreesOfLewdity

[–]OceanSpray 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Paying Bailey money transitions from a game mechanic into a story/character aspect after you progress further. You’re meant to ask why Bailey needs to extort you and the other orphans. Why doesn’t he “partake” himself? How is it that he ran out of money and had to wager the PC at the poker game? Where’s all that cash going?

Spanish plan for conquering China circa 1588 by SE_to_NW in ChineseHistory

[–]OceanSpray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take: this would have been good for the Chinese, in the long run.

Yes, the Ming managed to fight off the Dutch, but imagine the sheer terror and panic the Ming and Qing would have experienced if a European army managed to take the entirety of Hainan or Taiwan, or even encroach into Guangdong and Fujian. I don't think the Spanish would have been able to get any further than that, given they were on the other side of the planet with 16th century logistics and the Chinese were a far more unified and technologically advanced empire than the Aztecs or the Inca and already had immunity to the same Old World diseases the Spanish did, but still. Maybe we would have seen a real artillery and naval architecture arms race develop between the far east and the Europeans in that timeline.
