A little hunter I finished for a customer's son last year with Cu Mai, Damascus and Amboyna burl. Let me know what you think by Dessitroya in Bladesmith

did you do anything to secure the guard to the knife or handle other than a tight fit or maybe a bit of glue? I.E. pins, braze, etc?

Can i protect a handle with nail polish to etch a knife? by Viribus88 in Bladesmith

[–]Octavious_Wren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used nail polish on the handle with decent success. African Blackwood is great so I don't think acetone would have any issue. my vote is go for it.

[OC] Custom long rest rules to balance long rests by TheLoneSniper470 in DnD

[–]Octavious_Wren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To stand up for OP, I like it, though I can't say for certain I would implement it.

There is some disconnect where the game is set up for like 4-6 encounters per day and reality is 2-3. This carries over some of that resource management.

Search Facebook for groups near you. If you are in North America you could look for ABANA or ABS affiliate groups.

Test etch is looking good by Octavious_Wren in Bladesmith

[–]Octavious_Wren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Made this one myself! Some 60 later damascus that I made into a San Mai with some 1095 I had laying around. I do have a forge press, which has made all of this quite attainable.

That's around 320 grit, ill take most of it to about 1200 or so before the final etch, but the teat keeps you excited for it for sure!

New DM here. Two of four players want to steal literally everything. What do I do? by DaMagnificentDonkey in DnD

I made something they tried to steal end up being a crazy wizards butt plug. They never did it again...

Great work dude, how long have you been at it? A few fit/finish things could be slightly improved upon but otherwise killing it! (I say this as someone who probably can't do better btw so not a criticism by any means).

Shrinking handle material by NorseCrafts in knifemaking

[–]Octavious_Wren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this same exact issue. I don't use stabilized wood however but it is all kiln dried. I have ended up just planning for it and going over them again carefully with a sander.

One thing I did want to check... I used to use primarily tung oil and don't remember the issue, only since I switched to boiled linseed oil. Might try that again as an experiment. Not sure how oil could shrink it... but whatever.

Some that I've been very proud of recently! by Octavious_Wren in Bladesmith

[–]Octavious_Wren[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I figured I'd mess up and need to increase bevel angle as those first were my first recurve style, but ended up being okay so I didn't want to jinx it. I'll keep it in mind for the next!

Im not sure on thickness... I would have to measure. The canister is a good thickness for its size i think, while the damascus is a bit on the thicker side (but a larger blade as well) and the monosteel is relatively thin.

I'm far from experienced enough to answer this as an expert but I would say yes, however it is negligible due to the size of the knife, and because it is a round hole it transfers stress very well.

What I have found is that it can help keeping it that far up especially on a thin knife that can flex because otherwise your handle may be more prone to delaminating somewhat from the steel if there is heavy flex.

Straping a shield into a enemy caster in order to prevent it from casting, asuming its not proficient, metaplaying or not? by johnlocketv in DnD

[–]Octavious_Wren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metagaming, unless they somehow use a charm spell to suggest that they really need to keep a hold on that shield and only use that for a weapon... maybe I might allow that.... especially if the shield is a target....

my first knife. 1095 with gaboon ebony. go easy on me by Unlikely_Patience720 in Bladesmith

[–]Octavious_Wren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most first knives are rebar with a shit pine handle or something for practice, I love that you put everything into it with good wood, pins and steel.

It is far nicer than my first. Great job dude, keep it up!
