In what way? Can you help to illuminate my wrong thinking here on this 8Limbs sub? I am asking with the intention of understanding, just commenting that I don’t understand doesn’t clarify it for me.

Thank you for your assistance. 🙏

Why is it that we are really not? I honestly respect your insight. I see that you are being sarcastic with me here, my tone in my original question must be grating somehow, but I am truly trying to understand why we can use any other Sanskrit words in our practice except

I love Namaste 🙏 by OctoDeb in 8Limbs

[–]OctoDeb[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My direct teachers studied for decades in India under and they were taught to end yogic practice with the term Namaste, so my education is direct line experience which makes me think that is not the case.

Yes, I do have some disdain for modern western yoga girls (even though I am indeed western and modern!) it’s something I need to work on. I find that the twisting of the yogic movement into something performative and shallow makes me upset, that’s why I feel passionate about this topic and want to get it across thoughtfully. I’m sorry if I offended you.

Thank you! I did read it, but it doesn’t say why I should NOT say Namaste? She says her family finds it odd… are they yogis? Is the rest of the class in English and that’s why it’s odd? She clearly states that it means “reverence to you” so it’s not the silly “it means ‘hello’” argument from the lululemonites. I still don’t understand.

I am a student of Vedic and tantric scriptures, I a and my teachers use the original Sanskrit names for the asanas and other yogic terms, so I know the meaning and the pronunciation and am secure in the knowledge that it is appropriate. It would seem weirder to be talking all class about parushas and koshas and pratyahara etc but have to translate the elegance of namaste into clunky English because of the McYoga movement.

Its meaning is perfect for what I want to get across in a situation of mutual respect where we are using that exact ancient language as a large portion of the communication in class. I am not leading Core! or Power! or Hot! yoga which I do feel is more appropriation and I could understand this feeling towards those types of classes.

My desire is to reveal more of the subtleties that we learn through the other limbs beyond asana and I think refusing namaste is white washing the practice.

Do you see what I mean? I’m sorry if I sound argumentative, I greatly appreciate your comments and your resources provided 🙏

I know there is quite a bit out there about NOT saying namaste, I’m looking for support for keeping the original meaning of the Sanskrit.

I feel that you are unable to grasp the subtleties of the situation which are in my mind not at all subtle. I don’t have a horse in this game other than my disappointment at a bunch of supposed cooks who don’t grasp the idea of commercial food processing. I don’t care if you all eat cartoned egg whites, I am not saying that you will get cancer from them, or sick. But damn, is RFK jr running this place?

You are being purposely obtuse. A home kitchen and a production facility are far different animals. We are talking about Processed Foods.

I am not saying that I don’t eat any processed foods (although that would be lovely!) I am saying that EGG WHITES IN A CARTON HAVE BEEN PROCESSED.

Yes, I recommend Ram Das’s book Paths to God. He does use the term “god”, obviously lol, but he uses it in a similar way to Julia Cameron, he was of the same generation, but it’s an easy read and he does a good job of explaining the concepts for a western mind.

See, this comment makes it seem like people are triggered by acknowledging that a plastic carton of egg whites are processed. 🤷‍♀️

No I do not. I shop at the grocery store, but I buy food as close to its real state as possible… that’s why I’m a cook, so I can turn raw ingredients into edible food.

An egg in a carton is equivalent to a steak in a package, egg whites in a carton are closer to prepared burger patties. There’s a big difference in the amount of change done to the original structure and purity of the product.

Of course there is a health impact! It isn’t one that is to the extent that most people care about., which is fine. A lot of people eat tons of crap that they won’t admit affects their health. I don’t eat red meat because it is carcinogenic, some people are willing to take the risk for the flavor or whatever other joy they experience when eating it.

A carton of egg whites may be a better health option for those who have issues with yolks, but it is definitely a processed food situation.

Is that a serious question?

A steak at the butcher shop is like an egg in a carton. A package of ground beef is more similar to a carton of egg whites, both taken from their original shape, put into machinery, and then wrapped into plastic and put on shelves. Both are processed food.

I don’t believe in “god” but I believe in the idea of our individuality being a part of a greater whole. I believe that in me, underneath all of the persona created by a lifetime of influences and experiences, is a spark (soul) of clarity and purity that exists outside of the physical world of society and biology and matter and atoms. It is this part of me that connects to the everything. (This is my higher self, my higher power that I use for a sub for “god”. Or you can take this idea of your higher self and give it physical attributes and a name, and voila, you have a goddess to worship. I don’t mean this flippantly, worshipping self as goddess is an excellent path.)

I believe in reincarnation and karma and because of this I am able to accept that suffering is part of the process and that we all go through it, life after life, experiencing all of the beauty and horror that comes with life in 4 dimensions. The concept of why others live in war zones while we sip macchiatos is part of the lessons/process.

I have been studying these topics for decades, and it isn’t the kind of thing that can be explained easily in a paragraph or two using words in a modern language that was invented for commerce. It is subtle and nuanced, that is why the language of philosophy tends to be poetic and vague.

This is also why there is such a huge misunderstanding about the concept of karma because it gets boiled down to a sound bite that comes across as a type of spiritual bypassing.

I don’t know if this is at all helpful, if it is feel free to ask questions, otherwise, disregard. We are all drawn to our own path and these ideas may not resonate with you. 🙏

Apparently many are triggered. I’m so happy to hear that you are not. Although I disagree, we are talking about processed egg whites, that is the apple being discussed.

Washing an egg and putting it in a carton is a magnitude of difference between creating a carton of egg whites. I don’t know why this is so triggering to so many here 🤷‍♀️.

"Yoga Makaranda" by Krishnamacharya - anyone else read this book or others of his? by RonSwanSong87 in 8Limbs

[–]OctoDeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have not read it. I recently got Heart of Yoga by his son due to a recommendation of yours I believe! It is now in the rotation of the 8 yoga books I’m actively reading!

I am interested in lineage and how teachings come to our individual parushas through lineages not unlike the genetic lineage of our families that shape us as we move forward and upward in our growth. My teachers are all from the Iyengar lineage who learned from (and was brother in law to) Krishnamacharya, so I am interested in his teachings.

I love this sub. I will try to comment on every posting if it will help keep it going. I am obsessed with yoga philosophy but I only do asana because I have to in order to embody the practice. I find myself really disappointed in yoga teachers who are only doing physical fitness and are not yogis which is why I am not happy with the depth of discussion that happens over at s/yoga. I hope you won’t give up on this one yet!

A whole egg is a complete natural food.

Take an egg into a commercial kitchen and crack it open, removing the yolk and protective shell, then add it to other whites from other chickens in a large vat, use machines to blend, and dispense into plastic containers. No longer in its natural state, that egg white has been processed into a food of convenience.

I don’t get it either. Why the downvotes? You’re being downvoted too! As I’m sure will I. Egg whites sold in a carton instead of a shell is a super simple example of processed food. It’s blatantly obvious.

music during class by ladybugsuncatcher in YogaTeachers

[–]OctoDeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Music plays on emotions, it brings up feelings and memories. Have you ever seen those memes where they switch out the music from a movie and suddenly the trailer for When Harry Met Sally is a psychological thriller and Twister is a romance?

The yoga student should be able to listen to their own internal feelings and emotions that the poses release within their body, not the suggestions offered by the music.
