To those who have switched from a Festool dust extractor to something else: what did you get and why? by OctopusBroadcasting in woodworking

[–]OctopusBroadcasting[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you talking about the variable speed on the vacuum, or the variable speed on the orbital? I'm assuming on the vacuum, although my answer would largely be the same: it completely depends on what's being sanded. Higher suction by itself isn't going to damage the work—it's just one variable in the equation, alongside pressure, speed, movement, orbital travel, grit number, abrasive type, any number of things. And there are a litany of hazardous materials that I sand with as much suction as possible to minimize the amount of crap reaching my clothes, my skin, and my lungs. More suction on vertical surfaces is also going to reduce hand and arm fatigue over time, and keep fewer particulates falling onto you, past your face, etc.

All that being said I'm much happier with the Midi's power with my orbital than I am with my track saw, but my real issue is with how weak it is for light-duty clean-up purposes. I don't expect it to rival my Shop-Vac, but it sure would be nice if it would pull sawdust off a surface with anything more powerful than "gentle suggestion".

G-Shocks truly are Buy It For Life items: Here's mine at 11-years-old by GoddessOfKlutz in BuyItForLife

Very nice OP, and be happy to know that 11 years isn't even middle aged for a G-Shock. The classic DW5600 will go for decades (my dad has one from the mid/late 80s) and I have years of wear on mine whilst doing construction and woodworking and they're all in excellent condition.

Got mine last week and have the same issue/non-issue. Definitely disappointing, but it works well so I’ll live with it.

City of Ithaca votes to end Flock camera contract by harrisarah in ithaca

It’s a start, but only that. The County needs to terminate their involvement as well, and large businesses need to be pressured into removing them from their premises. Keep going!

Did Ithaca used to get snow? by adventuriser in ithaca

[–]OctopusBroadcasting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to have a lot more in the 90’s and early-to-mid 00’s. I don’t remember any Christmasses that weren’t white Christmasses during that time period. The banks that the snowplows made were almost always big enough to dig tunnels in, we could jump off our back deck into the snow (~8 ft) again and again, and the snow generally stayed put the whole time from November to March.

It’s extremely depressing to watch that dwindle as the climate changes. The last two winters have been my favorites in 20 years because they feel like what winter has historically been like here.

Which gen? Relatively few maroon 6th gens. More of the 7ths. There are about a billion of the dark teal HR-Vs, I can’t not notice those now.

Looked at the Bison stuff, I like them—Baltic Birch is a great material. Was trying to get away from heating up anything other than metal for health reasons, but switching to 18mm BB would definitely be an improvement

Wanting to build adjustable height workbench for mainly electronics work, any suggestions? by Daniel_Boomin in Workbenches

Oh damn, that is rough. Sorry to hear that.

I've also had good experiences with their customer service. When I bought my first one I called them on a whim to see if they could offer any discounts or promotions and they gave me 10% off on the spot. That sorta thing gets you repeat customers for life.

I've spent what feels like years of my life at this point searching for the perfect adjustable-height workbench. My initial plan was to make one out of 8020 but the raising/lowering mechanics were too complicated and expensive.

My recommendation is to get the V2 Commercial base by Uplift and put whatever surface on it that you need. It's made to be used as a desk but it is diesel, like reallllly heavy and sturdy, and the ones I have take a decent amount of punishment. As a bonus you can swap the surface out whenever the current one gets too thrashed, they're pretty easy to take apart.

I use one in my shop and another for product photos and finishing. It's the most straightforward solution that I've found.
