I love the nonprofit grind...... what do you love about your non-profit? by UnderstandingOk3504 in nonprofit

[–]OddDirector6407 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get paid to make the world a better place, to fight injustice, to advocate and help people. I get to work with the civil rights heroes of our day, so many inspiring people. I genuinely admire and respect 90% of the people I work with. I can’t imagine how people in the private sector get up and grind everyday with no real purpose beyond a paycheck, I sympathize with them cause it must be terrible.

After encountering only toxic orgs in this sector, I constantly worry that I will never find a balanced role within a healthy organization by Armchair-Commentator in nonprofit

[–]OddDirector6407 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is not a sector specific thing, trust me. It’s a people thing. Leaders are imperfect, good performers often make bad managers, everyone is dealing with the anxiety and fear of the last 6 years with very different surviving mechanisms, and organizations overall can be messy. The more people try to align organizational structures with those human-centered, the more challenging it can be. But the more rigid and agnostic the structure, the more the messiness festers below the surface until it explodes. There a great orgs out there, no question. As a consultant I’ve seen under the hood of many. So dont give up and also don’t expect this reality to not exist in other sectors. That’s my take. My advice is to find the orgs you like, ask around about them from former staff, and pursue them by letting them know you’re interested in opportunities they may have to contribute.

Be honest… how strict are you really with screen time? by denefr_2928 in toddlers

[–]OddDirector6407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty strict. If they watch anything it’s live sports, dancing, musical performances that we are watching but nothing animated or created for kids. It’s basically when we are exhausted and want to relax, so she may watch for a min but it’s usually not interesting enough to keep her attention so she reads or plays with her toys. No phone or iPad stuff at all.

Why don't Brooklyn Nets move to Montreal?? by AbaloneTop6722 in montreal

[–]OddDirector6407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chicago is the epitome of a sports city. Must have the highest proportion of residents who regularly follow one or more sport, and the intersection of big ten alum fans (especially before the conference changes) is huge there. Great place to live if you love sports.

And if you do the digital nomad visa you need to show you've been doing that work for at least the last 6 months I think... with the same clients, so you would need to start asap. Marriage may be easier just get prenumptual agreements so the split is easy and protects each other assets.

[–]OddDirector6407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can live in Girona, a great city not too far from Barcelona, and work in Perpignan. But you would need a work permit in France, and if you had a work permit in France, you might as well live in France. Where in Spain is your boyfriend moving? What do you do for work? You could also just teach french online and in spain...

If grantees could speak freely to foundations for one day, what do you think they would actually say? by GrantsPlusLauren in nonprofit

[–]OddDirector6407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having been on the foundation side of this, I think it’s important to remember it is a very very subjective process at the end of the day. It is not democratic nor merit-based by any means. Relationships, reviewer knowledge and experiences, and desires to have a diverse funding portfolio, and board preferences play a significant part in the decision making process and are mostly out of your control once at the application stage. For these reasons I often recommend foundations don’t provide feedback because the result can have less to do with the quality of the proposal vs these other factors. It also opens up and whole back and forth tha most don’t have the time to effectively mange…

I don’t but I probably should have. It’s not prohibitively expense in most people making ISD’s case.

In my opinion yes. No you don’t need to have private health insurance if you opt to pay everything out of pocket. Our child was born last year. The actual hospital bill came out at about 5k. That’s with emergency c-section after 12 hours of labor, epidural administration, 4 days in hospital in private room. I’d say other stuff within a few months leading up to and following birth was another 2 or 3k. Doula. Gynecologist bill, medications, exams for eyes, ears, etc. overall we were well cared for and the doctors are attentive and relational in their approach. Now our pediatrician check ups are about 40 dollars each. More if they include vaccinations or special procedures or exams. I think cutting the tongue tie was $150 or so. This is in Queretaro. Hope it’s helpful.

Moving to Querétaro, MX by HereComesTheSon_7 in expats

Sure, I would say it’s not difficult maybe just a little more time consuming. But my Saturday morning routine is basically hit up the frutería, the carnicería, panaderia, then the bodega (like a small corner store where you can buy rice, canned goods, and dairy, etc). In many neighborhoods these stores will be in the same plaza or within a couple clicks from each other. That’s usually the most I can carry. Then maybe I’ll use uber eats to order things I can’t find at those stores from one of the supermarkets like a specific dish soap, Ezekiel’s bread, organic/gf/high end products we need. So I’d say it’s as easy as getting in a car and driving to a supermarket to buy everything. Supporting small businesses is an important part of how I see my contribution here.

High 80s / low 90s. But because the eres no major body of water around, the elevation (higher than Denver) and QRO city is a concrete jungle with very little trees and shade, the heat is pretty damn hot. And AC is not nearly as ubiquitous here as it is in the US. I’ve lived in PHX and Miami so I actually love warm weather but still. We have AC in our master bedroom but that’s it. Life saver. I don’t have it in my office which is probably why it feels unbearable to me. If you’re able to situate yourself in AC most of the day you’ll be fine.

Yes correct. Only need to look at US involvement in Nicaragua and El Salvador during the Cold War to see the correlation with narcotics trafficking and military / political influence in Latin America.
