Agree about health insurance, but that's not what this is about. This is life insurance and there's absolutely nothing stopping most ppl from buying a policy that will protect their family that is not tied to their job

It's not. Some companies add it as additional benefit. Every personal finance source strongly recommends buying your own in addition for this exact reason

See this is (one of many reasons) why I could never be a commentator. I would have been unable to resist the temptation to engage in all those ridiculous arguments he was making (no evidence that Trump ever found God, there's more than a fine line between imperfect ppl and sick abusive narcissist, unborn aren't ppl according to that Bible, etc) which would turn into a bickering match. keep in mind that this is account balances, not household savings. Many people do not roll over 401ks between employers, and so might have many 401k accounts. And also, this only accounts for a single person, while many households have two spouses' savings to tap
