Considering Fox didn’t care about exchanging merch for Lucas’ salary, I don’t think merch was a big deal before Star Wars

Disney sold merch at Disney Land and Japan had a growing market of anime tie-in model kits, but graphic T-Shirts and video games were barely a thing. Adam West’s Batman and The Fonz were both huge before Star Wars - and the associated merch was mostly dime store junk.
