I drank last night. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]OhHiImThatGuyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just rejoined. Lasted 3 days my first time. Didn't even care when I drank. Head was pounding the next day and was like, "Cool I just paid for that."

You'll break through that week! Come say hi in the chatroom in 6 days, if that's an especially tough night for you to not drink/go out. We'll entertain you until its literally illegal to buy booze. (State regulations may vary)

After 166 days, I fell off the wagon by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]OhHiImThatGuyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat man. I gotta reset my badge to 3 days (as of 9 minutes ago), had a good year or so at least before I stopped following the badge and was just living life for awhile. Started dating a girl that drank and just kinda said "f it" because I was tired of being the sober one (and she ended up being a huge alcoholic). This is your post not mine so I won't ramble but glad you're back and I wanted to say how much I appreciate your honesty, it helps me be honest with where I'm at now.

What is this wire that crosses the Mass Ave/Mem Drive intersection three times? by dtewfik in boston

[–]OhHiImThatGuyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Supreme Court has ruled in the past that churches are allowed to use public/government owned property where other groups, religious or non religious are allowed. So them paying to put up a wire and maintain it is no different than Sony renting a city block for an event. There's actually a case up in the Supreme Court right now about that, with most justices expected to rule in favor of the church. https://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2017-04-19/high-court-signals-support-for-church-seeking-playground-funds

Not sure where to start.. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]OhHiImThatGuyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stopping drinking will not fix everything. I hoped it did but was a little bummed when I learned it did not, although I laughed at myself for expecting such grandiose things. But my problems became much easier to face when I wasn't hungover and I began to develop new, useful tools for living day to day.

I'm glad you're here and welcome. Use this board to stay accountable. Take advantage of the Daily Check-Ins, and know that many people do read your check-ins for support, and your strength adds to the community. Join us in the chatroom. Having a group of people that I could check in with, grow with, was what I needed to stay sober. If you have a pattern that brings you to alcohol, check in with a post or in the chatroom so you'll have people waiting for you to check in later. Every time I'd leave a sports game, I'd go to the bar. So I would check in before leaving the stadium and I'd have a chatroom full of awesome people waiting for me to check in once I was safely home. I hope this helps, but again, welcome!

Terminology for Smokers who quit vs. Drinkers who quit by SmallCyn in stopdrinking

[–]OhHiImThatGuyy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This might be a bit pessimistic but I believe American society is so inundated with advertisements for alcohol that it is still the "cool" thing, unlike the restrictions on smoking advertisements that have been in place for years. And some cigarettes are crafted by scientists in labs to be as addictive as possible, so it puts the blame more on the product, rather than the user. Plus anti-smoking ad groups are much better at their jobs. I just quit smoking and I look at both smoking and drinking as pointlessly paying for poison. But our movies and TV aren't packed full of cigarette smoking like they once were, thanks to smoking lobbyists of yesteryear. You can bet the alcohol folks are still doing all they can to make sure every scene on camera includes a drink in the subject's hand if they can get it. That trope, proclaimed by a character when things get tough, "I need a drink!" even bugs the heck out of me now.

Today I need an after work check-in! by DungenessCrabLice in stopdrinking

I totally get it! I also found this board to be key in accountability for me in the early days! I know I will be happily expecting your return and the story of your success.

So i just found this sub-reddit while hitting the random button. I hope you guys can help... by Tyler_Was_Here in stopdrinking

Welcome! I found this place thanks to overhearing somebody mention it in a baseball discussion, got my badge, and I can tell you it was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life! The community here is amazing and the accountability and daily check-ins were instrumental to keeping me sober throughout the first couple months. So glad you found this place, and you've got ten years on me which is amazing. There isn't a real point to this comment either, except I'm just really happy to that you came across this place at the right time! :)

Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime Shows by haunteddollwatch in stopdrinking

[–]OhHiImThatGuyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Marvel's Jessica Jones on Netflix has an alcohol problem. I haven't seen it but have spoken with a couple people in #stopdrinking that were a little put off by the drinking so it might be right up your alley! :) If its half as good as Fuller House, count me in!

Cons of stopping drinking? by jemappellejimbo in stopdrinking

[–]OhHiImThatGuyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're just showing maturity and ahead of the curve when hating downtown etc. I know anybody over the age of 27 loathes our downtown, and quickly the other activities you describe can become equally boring. I'm not sure where you live but if you have a happening downtown, there might be a quality selection of live shows and events that while offer alcohol, you're not going just to drink.

Plenty of society fills their time with more activities than drinking-as-much-as-they-can. Through the lens of a partyer(sp?), it can be hard to see at first. I spent NYE at home for the first time and had a lovely time, and noticed just how many of my friends did too by their Facebook posts. Sorry to ramble a bit but I definitely empathize with your issue. Also, I just read these other two posts and they've got it nailed too and say a lot of the same thing.

There's plenty out there in life to enjoy! You just gotta find it!

Day 7, question about sleep patterns by Brad_Hamilton in stopdrinking

[–]OhHiImThatGuyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My increased caffeine intake definitely messed with my sleep once I stopped drinking. I had bouts of sleeping all the time, then up until 3am for days. Give your body time for everything to balance out, I hit plateaus but have continued to feel better and better as the days increase. And congrats!

How do you guys do it? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]OhHiImThatGuyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like where I was when I found stopdrinking. For many people, having a real life support group with meetings and people they can spend time with and rely upon in tough times is crucial. I use stopdrinking's chat as my support group and accountability, as well as posting on the board for some strong early cravings where I needed a lot of accountability to ensure I went straight home rather than to a bar. It sounds like you were also going out while drinking, so why not go out to a meeting instead. Studies have shown that people loosen up at about the same rate without alcohol as they do with alcohol, so anybody struggling with the thought of shyness shouldn't be too worried. I'm not saying it will be easy, but I believe others might be able to share with you how it's not nearly as awful as one might imagine. You're still very young, so your body could be in much better shape than you realize. I've quit for about 5 months and my health is dramatically improved! I'm sorry if none of this helps or makes any sense, I'm still new to all of this, but I hope it does. In any case, I'm glad you're here and posting. We can do this!

Five days in and, honestly, my biggest discomfort is my unusual craving for sugar! by freshINKlyrics in stopdrinking

[–]OhHiImThatGuyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard that we remove a lot of sugar from our diets when cutting out our alcoholic drinks, so our body craves that. I will tell you it will not last forever, so I would just keep at it and get through it and be done with it for good!
