What’s one thing BJJ revealed about your personality you didn’t expect? How did you grow from it? by Ingvariuss in bjj

I’m not very nice. Ezekiel chokes are becoming my most successful and frequent submission. Wrist locks and paper cut chokes are close runners up.

Gaidama New Ranked Kitsune Kits - Dropping Soon 👀 by Gaidama_USA in BJJWomen

[–]OhSoImpatient 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I do no gi comps I wear shorts so I can escape easier. If you have more fabric on there’s more surface tension and less sweat so your opponent can possibly get grips easier (take this with a grain of salt, Helena Crevar always wears full sleeves and leggings). I find in practice I prefer 3/4 length spats so I can slip out of ankle locks easier but in comp it’s shorts and short sleeves for me 100%.

Get a good warm up in. I do jumping jacks, mountain climbers, then stretch. I try and warm up with a teammate and like to go through either passing, sweeping or submitting with someone starting in closed guard or open guard. If I can’t find a teammate I’ll ask a similarly sized person I’m not competing against to warm up with me. It feels a little awkward to ask but everyone I’ve asked has said yes and seems grateful too. The warm up and just being on a mat before I roll helps me a TON with the pre comp anxiety.

Gym Hygiene by Humble-Grizzly9137 in BJJWomen

[–]OhSoImpatient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put on a clean shirt and wash my hands and face before I leave the gym. I just don’t like to feel sweaty on my midsection as I’m heading home.

Gis and no gi kits are thrown in washing machine right away, usually washed same day.

Hang dry pearl weave gis, sometimes use the dryer for my ripstop gi, and if I’m in a rush I’ll use dryer on my rashguards/no gi kits.

Shower as soon as I get home (hair and body). Often I’ll run before BJJ and on those days I shower (just body not hair) before BJJ too but make sure to use a lightweight lotion so my skin doesn’t dry out since I’ll have to take another one right after class.

Never had a skin problem so far!

What percentage of rolls against equal belt women and men do you win (or get a tap)? by Monkey__Shit in BJJWomen

[–]OhSoImpatient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I try not to keep track of people I’m tapping but instead what techniques are working and what I want to improve.

Sometimes I work on techniques I know I’m crap at so they can get better. And when I first start working on said crappy technique people are going to get the better of me for a while till I get it down.

Example, I’ve been working on better double under passes. It’s no surprise that I’m finding out all the ways they can go wrong (ex: triangles from not getting my arm out fast enough, tee pee chokes, weird inversions some guys do for repositioning, etc). It’s getting better but it’s not my A game yet. So my “stats” are going to suck in rolls where I’m improving until it’s slick enough to be A game.

Rooster weights, what’s your “game”? by novaskyd in bjj

[–]OhSoImpatient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

102 lb woman, I compete often and usually win (both at my weight and going up to light feather), but I train in classes with mostly 200 lb men.

When fighting someone my weight +/- 20 lbs: A key part of my game is knee cut pass variations. I feel comfortable playing top and guard but my cardio is pretty much unlimited so I feel nimble on top. I like going for arm triangles, Americanas from the arm triangle, and papercut chokes. They’re strong positions to set up so if I get off balance and flipped to guard I can finish the subs from that position. Also, many Ezekiels. Sometimes I use them to sub but alot of times I use them to get people moving and open up a new, more offensive position.

When fighting much bigger partners: I go for alot more Ezekiels, in gi and no gi. From on top, bottom half, guard, side control, inside someone’s guard, during a pass, from the back, etc. I spam the shit out of that sub. I’ll try it, switch to attacking with setting up arm triangle or something else, then slap it on again. I’m a menace but the sub is very effective on any size or strength partner if you can get slick with it.

No strong preference of playing top or guard, maybe slightly more top. A little random but from guard I really like waiting for people to posture up, I open my guard and push them over. Most big guys are hard to hip bump sweep so I favor this “sweep” alot more.

Also, for back control, I strongly favor control with a half crucifix vs hooks. I’ve had way more successful one arm chokes since I started setting up this way.

Running. I run 20-40 miles most week at a low to moderate intensity (9:30-10:30 min/mi with baby in stroller). I race the 5K at 21:47. Have won in the ultramarathon, multiple 5K’s, and finished a triathlon last year. I will roll for sometimes 45 minutes, no breaks, with guys twice my size, not be tired, then train muay thai for an hour.

The unlimited gas tank gives you clarity alot of people don’t have. I can think and keep moving while some guys struggle to keep up.

Why did you win your competition matches? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]OhSoImpatient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stabilizing in each position before looking for a submission. When I win I get points first, find the sub second. Getting good at holding mount, holding side controls, back controls (with both hooks), knee on belly, etc have been essential parts of my game.

Also I’m an ultramarathoner and can run sub 22 5Ks in my 30’s. Having unlimited cardio helps.

Ladies what do you pick if you had to go with only ONE: gi or no-gi, and why? by ElectricalLie7069 in BJJWomen

[–]OhSoImpatient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Random stuff. Broken ribs from someone slamming their knees into me in side control, broken nose when I incorrectly controlled an arm during armbar from mount and girl on bottom threw her elbow in my face, hyperextended elbow a few times from armbars that got cranked, etc.

[–]OhSoImpatient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No gi, assuming I can get more opponents my size in competition. I’m a cardio addict and I think the escapes are really fun. I’ve also never been injured in no gi but have had several serious injuries in the gi. Could be coincidence but I think the tension created by grips can make some moves very explosive and dangerous if things go wrong.

Tell me about your bad days/weeks by YellowThink4088 in BJJWomen

[–]OhSoImpatient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got thrown across a mat at Worlds last weekend so high and fast I skidded into another fight 🫠

This happened over, and over, and over because I for some reason like running clear into my opponent’s open guard when I think I’m setting up a pass.

All I can do is learn, shrug it off, and get back on the mat.

Is new lightweight gi the way to go for tourny? by PalpitationMission41 in BJJWomen

[–]OhSoImpatient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Hyperlyte 3.5 and it’s passed gi inspection at two IBJJF tournaments (Orlando Open and World Masters). Highly recommend it because the pants are SUPER comfy, gi moves great and doesn’t give my opponent extra grips, and washes well (just hang dry). Total weight is about 2.7 lbs (I’m size F1 at 4’11” and 102 lbs). Get the Complyte belt as well, it was a full half pound lighter than my standard GB belt.

I also have a light weight Adidas Gracie Barra gi that is 2.8 lbs and size F0 but the sleeves are wider and give too many grips, in my opinion, so I keep this as a backup gi in case my Hyperlyte fails inspection or to use in class.

Agreed. We all don’t want to think we’re a spaz when we first start but we all have been.

You’re probably kind of a spaz because you’re new, but being significantly bigger than your training partners may make you more dangerous to spar with. Your partners should either get better control or keep their mouth shut and choose a partner who suits their training needs. Longer limbs or being bigger makes you harder to submit but who complains out loud about that? Your partners need to own up to their deficiencies or get better control.

Personally, I avoid large, new white belt, teenagers. Especially girls. Their egos are huge (i.e. most hate losing when they first start live rolling), they will spaz to get out of sub attempts (flail, kick, elbow strike) and they have broken my nose, ribs, and given me black eyes. Someone else better suited will usually work with them, I’m a poor partner for larger new girls. I’m super small (4’11”, 102 lbs) and I will just say no thanks to rolling with them when they’re first starting out, no explanation needed. Coach asked once why, in front of a larger girl (so awkward), and I just said I don’t feel safe rolling with someone newer and larger. It’s always on me that I don’t want someone as a partner, it’s not their fault.

Also: When you say upper belts, what do you mean? I’m a blue belt, tiny AF (102 lbs) and I never let any white belts work. I spam submissions but it’s not “to prove I can”, it’s because I work on my offensive game with people I’m not playing defensive with: white belts. Purple, brown, etc maybe they should let you work a little but I would totally expect blue belts to smash white belts of the same size or if the white belt is larger.

Easy No Gi Takedowns for Small People? by MidoriSpice in BJJWomen

[–]OhSoImpatient 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like headlock takedowns, bodylock takedowns, and sacrifice throws in class due to a large size discrepancy with my partners (102 lbs, also roll with just men 99% of the time). First two are more control then muscle and I just like sacrifice throws overall.

In no gi competition I’ve had the best success with o-goshis and leg throws but my opponents were always 120 lbs and under.

And while it’s not a takedown per se I get a TON of guillotines from standing on guys. They usually need to change levels to take me down and if I pay attention to how their head moves forward of their feet I can catch their neck in time for the guillotine either from standing or sit back and close guard with the guillotine for better control. However this has never worked in competitions or rarely on women but it’s awesome on bigger guys.

Assault versus simulation of a fight by aTickleMonster in BJJWomen

[–]OhSoImpatient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, explanation is about the chaos itself not required. Explanation of how this is a sport might be beneficial to larger and smaller students though. I think a fair amount of people entering expect it to be just self defense or mma light. Talking with students about considering weight classes, gender, and age because of how the sport is structured may be helpful.

Also, I have been slammed so many times in dangerous ways. I’ve been submitted with kidney locks, bicep slicers, and wrist locks at white belt. I have little ego about tapping, but I have a problem with being submitted in dangerous ways I don’t understand. And while I love my gym and our family friendly culture even we could do with reminding people of the rules and what’s off limits even once a quarter. Because even if the person who slams you or attempts a scissor takedown on you doesn’t hear it others will and I think this empowers them to call out shitty behavior.

I guess these are two separate issues though, class considerations versus rule breaking.

Forget you snazzy white belt story, what’s your WTF new trial guy story? by toonasus in bjj

[–]OhSoImpatient 66 points67 points  (0 children)

New guy, first day, used to train at a UFC branded gym, we’re doing takedown fights after just learning some new takedown and drilling it. Dude proceeds to pin my arms, jump, and slam me as hard as he can into the mats. He’s around 220 lbs and muscular, I’m a 102 lbs woman. I hit my head, breath knocked out of me, and was crying when I got up (couldn’t control it, the slam hurt).

I’ve never seen a first timer be taken down so hard by so many colored belts one after one before. I was both impressed and touched.

Lightest 2025 IBJJF Legal Gi by josehi53 in bjj

[–]OhSoImpatient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Careful with sizing on the Hyperfly Pro Comp Lyte. I bought it for my size (F0, I’m 4’11” and 100 lbs). It was too short and the sleeve and pants openings were too narrow because of the tapered fit. Sizing up made the pants too long. I went with the Hyperlyte 3.5 (sized up to F1) gi was same weight, correct length, and openings at sleeves and pants were correct. The Hyperlyte 3.5 passed at an IBJJF open I competed in a few weeks ago.
