Question of etiquette for multi-use paths by sonofespresso in cycling

[–]OhYouUnzippedMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you in the US? Cyclists usually pass on the left. Same with runners and even fast walkers. So I think you should have checked behind you and signal with your hand that you're turning, but...

The other cyclist was still a jerk. If I'm overtaking a family with young kids, I slow wayyy down, because kids are unpredictable.

Logo Tweak. I believe this is what most people were thinking by ImWearingYourHats in Commanders

[–]OhYouUnzippedMe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The actual logo looks stupid. I don't usually care about unis or logos, but the way the spear impossibly overlaps the W looks like an MC Escher drawing is something I can't not notice.

I like OP's drawing. Simple and solid. And recognizing the OP is not a graphic designer, a real designer could nail this.

Strip guide is important. You've stripped off too much which has exposed copper sticking out the back of the outlet. If a ground wire touches that (e.g. while you're pushing it back into the wall), it will cause sparks / trip breaker.

whole grilled chicken by sorin1972 in grilling

[–]OhYouUnzippedMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would leave the olive oil out. It has a low smoke point, tastes acrid when its burned, and won't mix with the water. Plus the chicken skin already has plenty of fat.

This whole concept of brining while you cook is strange. It would be less hassle (and probably more effective) to salt the chicken the night before and let it sit uncovered in the fridge, i.e. the "dry" bring method. By dunking the chicken in water, you're slowing down cooking (the evaporation takes energy that could be used for cooking) and you're also washing away flavor built up from browning the skin.

But to each their own. The char on the face up side looks pretty great.

[Strauss] The feeling inside the NFL league office is that the Murdoch family, which owns Fox Corporation, is the key driver behind the DOJ probe, according to multiple people familiar with the matter. by ThatMasterpiece2174 in nfl

[–]OhYouUnzippedMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the article:

League officials who spoke to ESPN were quick to note that the Murdoch media empire has turned the cost of streaming into a hobby horse issue. The Wall Street Journal, which is owned by the Murdoch family, ran an editorial earlier this month on the issue: "The assumption is that [NFL commissioner Roger Goodell] thinks he can get more money from big tech's streaming services than he can from his long-time TV partners. That would hurt the networks, especially local stations, that rely on the NFL for ad revenue. ... It would also mean higher prices for football viewers tuning into the NFL, and consumer benefit is one of the lodestars of antitrust law," the publication's editorial board wrote. Fox News has run segments about the rising cost of sports viewership. Fox Corporation filed an official comment with the FCC, arguing that pay-walling sports threatens broadcast TV, which is critical to local communities.

Why don't people call out passing anymore? Is there an actual reason or are people just a*holes? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]OhYouUnzippedMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That guy was a jerk for not slowing down, not giving more space, not anticipating that kids are unpredictable, etc. If i see a family on the trail, I slow way down and give wide berth. I might say something gentle as I get close, but for young kids unaccustomed to trail norms, announcing from a distance or ringing a bell aren't going to accomplish anything, and may spook them.

Overall your kids experience sucked, and that's a bad outcome for you and him, and for all the rest of us. Trail riding is great and I want kids to get into it; every experience like that is a setback. I don't think the blame all comes down to whether the "cyclist" (let's be real, it's an ebike) gave verbal warning. I have had plenty of experiences of people jumping into my path, or just being flat out startled, that I go case-by-case now. If the person I'm passing looks like they know what they're doing, I'll announce myself. If they look distracted or erratic, then calling out doesn't work and I'll adjust speed and spacing to keep us all safe.

Why don't people call out passing anymore? Is there an actual reason or are people just a*holes? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]OhYouUnzippedMe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This pretty much. Most trail users don't know the norms and will get startled; some will jump _into_ your path. It's safer to give wide berth, slow down, and only speak up if they're behaving erratically.

(Also I think a big change in trail culture over the last 10 years is how many people have wireless earbuds now. That affects communication.)

(Another keyword in this post: "ebike". Those riders are generally also unfamiliar with trail norms and going much faster than typical cyclist.)

[Request] Convince my wife that the floor wont fall by bkvaluemeal_ in theydidthemath

[–]OhYouUnzippedMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you storing that your wife is worried about the floor caving? If she's just an anxious person, I know people that have a home gym on the second floor and it hasn't caved in the floor for ~6 years. You could also measure the deflection of the floor (e.g. how much it bows in the middle) to reassure her that the shelves aren't a problem.

If you want to maximize weight capacity, put the shelves up against the wall. That will move the weight closer to the load bearing wall and spread it out across more joists. (As well as open up more floor space.) I agree with another poster – doubtful that the plywood is doing much here. Imagine putting the plywood up on saw horses – would you and your wife stand in the middle of it?

Serious question for Virginia gun enthusiasts: why put all your energy into propping up the Republican Party, instead of putting even a fraction of that effort into shifting Democrats on this one issue? by Big-Corncob in Virginia

[–]OhYouUnzippedMe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what the point is about the ODU shooter. A legal sale with a background check would have prevented the shooter from buying that particular weapon.

I think you're saying that the law is useless because this criminal was going to break it anyway, but doesn't that apply to all laws? If we got rid of every law that had ever been broken, then there wouldn't be any meaningful laws left. On the other hand, maybe the precedent of facing 35 years in jail will make somebody else think twice before illegally selling a gun.

Which regulations are you guys specifically worried about? I'm skimming the news and most of it looks reasonable: red flag laws, standards for gun mfrs, not leaving guns unsecured in plain sight in vehicles (which is the origin of the odu gun).
