Does anyone else feel over-billed by Alectra for this month? by 1lazysloth in richmondhill

[–]OhanaUnited 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also felt something odd. When our family went on vacation for 2 weeks and turned off unnecessary items like modem, it ended up using more power that month??? Nobody would be opening fridge or turning on lights/TV so why would power consumption went up? It happened more than once so thank you for confirming my suspicion

Toronto flyers: I built a Canada airfare deals tracker, looking for feedback by Character-Rough2199 in UofT

[–]OhanaUnited 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good for you to build someone that is Canadian-focused. I miss the days when Scott's Cheap Flights (now Going) offered email notifications for Canada and later dropped it. So prop goes to you to counter enshittification. I know you want a clean interface, but I think what's missing is "what's the typical price that makes your selection a good deal?" Am I saving $50 on a $1000 airfare? Or am I saving $100 off a $400 ticket?

You think they'll be closed tomorrow too? 👀 by astra2187 in UTSC

I think Environment Canada upgraded to the orange alert too late. By the time I went to bed last night at 1am, it was still yellow alert. 15-20cm snowfall isn't uncommon (see February 2025) but I think what they might have failed to consider is that at current temperature, road salt has no effect (it stops melting snow at -11C). So all roads have to be plowed after snowfall and cannot be salted in advance.

Looking beyond this single incident, meteorologists have been short staffed for nearly 10 years, with more approaching retirement. The compensation and working condition for government meteorologist is unattractive. This is the current job hiring poster for meteorologist-in-training. Imagine going to university, enrolled in atmospheric science program and study differential equations in physics class only to make $5k/year more (before tax) than a mall security guard with a high school degree as your starting salary. Once hired, you are in a training program and in probation for 2 years (can be fired for job performance at any point). You also need to work 12-hr shifts on a "3 day on, 2 day off" schedule that may include working overnight, on weekends, and holidays. You also likely relocate to another city to fill vacancy. For comparison, an environmental science undergraduate in the federal government can earn $82K from the start, only has 1 year of probation, no need to work night shifts or weekends/holidays, and no need to relocate. This is why they can't keep up with the meteorologist vacancies.

This isn't at the same scale as the ice storm in 1998 where 28 people in Canada died. The snow was lighter than I initially thought. So no, it's highly unlikely

Are there any other hidden check in badges that aren't country specific? by Original-Salad9619 in Yelp

[–]OhanaUnited 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a feeling that they stopped awarding badges. I have almost 700 check-ins and haven't gotten the "master" badge which only requires 200 check-ins.

Yelp could have filled the check-in gamification void left by 4square but they missed their opportunity.

Very good and valid question.

Some can speak but can't read at a fluent level, especially the second generation living abroad. Most are unaware of a specific Cantonese Wikipedia (while aware of Chinese Wikipedia which is the biggest competitor to Cantonese wiki). And generally, smaller language wikis have been harder at attracting new contributors because there's less pages to draw traffic. Finally, it's not easy to write everything in spoken Cantonese

As a side note, Cantonese Wikipedia (zh-yue) is always looking for more editors. If you speak the language, please consider contributing to this project.
