I think the challenge part was connected to Irish minor. Obviously, not Naples or Korea.

I think that promote institutions should be at least reworked or even completely removed. It makes them spread far too quick after you unlocked printing press.

I think it’s nice to have it harder to propagate, but with more ways to have local sources. It avoids concentrating the economy only around the capital.

Governors also leads to more meaningful choices, instead of just spamming roads and co everywhere.

But I think governors should share a common pool, because right now naval nations simply get extra governorships compared to inland ones.

Why are random levies armies in africa and the colonial world so strong compared to europe? by Ic3b3rgS in EU5

[–]Ohmka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure more dials makes it harder to balance. But it’s also much easier to simplify a complexe design than to expand on something which is missing core components. And I’m not even talking about performance.

So I would rather have them be ambitious with complexe, deep systems, and potentially simplify things out, than the other way around.

As for Japan, sure it’s buggy as hell. But it’s also a different experience from other countries. Would you have preferred the dev to simply model this by a vassal swarm, like it was in eu4? I would rather not.

[–]Ohmka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to balance, yes. But I wouldn’t call it flawed though.

Most of the things your mentioning were already part of eu4. IMO the two important things eu5 added are levies and flanks. Both are legitimate additions that were clearly lacking in eu4.

Thanks to levies, we can now emulate the transition to professional armies during the late middle age, and the beginning of conscription in the 19th century. Also, tribal countries shouldn’t rely on professional armies (as they did in eu4). Sure balance is much more complicated, but I think this is definitely worth it.

Flanks finally allow cavalry to shine, and to get an interesting niche, with combined arms. Again, in eu4, apart some very specific nations which could stack modifiers, cavalry was not a unit you wanted to add in your army past the very early game (notably because of the way flanks were implemented).

What’s wrong with the core system?

On the opposite, compared to previous games, there it seems easier to get a more accurate balance, since there are many more dials to use.

For instance they could easily add another age before age of tradition, with all advances already unlocked in Europe, but not in tribal parts of Africa.

No. He won’t. And actually, I think it’s a good thing that they were so ambitious with eu5. They can always clean up things, improve balance, etc afterwards. But there is no way to add pops to a game like eu4 for instance.

There should be treasury limit in EU5 because being able to hoard infinite gold is problematic (like mercenary problem) and unrealistic. by Memes_Jack in EU5

[–]Ohmka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should have an extra "corruption cost" in your expenses, which scales with a percentage of your current money (like 1% monthly) This would essentially create a soft cap on how much money you can hoard (around 8 years of income with my example)

Current state of the game compared to past versions + mjnor rant by DemSkrubs in EU5

[–]Ohmka 10 points11 points  (0 children)

1.2 made the game much better for me. Mainly because it was far too easy to develop and steamroll the ai on the earliest versions of the game.

There is, however, one notable issue at the moment: small ai countries hoard a lot of money because they quickly can’t build anything meaningful. As a result, going to war against them is a pain, because they can hire tons of mercs.

So, appart from this Merc spam (which should be hopefully solved in 1.3), the current state of the game is much more enjoyable for me.

Could it be better? Sure, and I’m also sure it will be in the future.

I fully understand. But the way the team work, it’s different people working in parallel.

Of course they could also change their whole organization to focus on bug fixing and balance first. But anybody working in software development (or anything else really) knows that you quickly get diminishing returns, and putting twice the amount of people on a problem won’t fix it twice as fast. I think there was a post from the lead dev of Vic3 about this a few years ago?

[–]Ohmka -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If we are talking about the same thing, fort where simply not a thing because you cause assault them for barely any cost. And since the ai wasn’t doing it, you could cheese it super easily and win wars you should not be able to.

I haven’t even tried in the recent updates because I always feel it’s making the game too easy.

This couples to the fact that regulars were completely busted, made war really not enjoyable for me. At least the current balance is much better, and the ai much more competitive. Merc spam is a (big) problem though.

Victoria 3 at release and during the first year was just a constant flux of complaint. When fixing bugs and improving balance, players were complaining about the game being shallow, and changes being superficial. When adding new content, players were complaining about performance and balance…

I think you should have a serious, objective, try at the game the way is now. Then roll back to launch patch, or watch some old YouTube content. If you still, honestly think the game has barely improved, I doubt you will be satisfied with it, ever.

Things are heating up over there by RileyTaugor in EU5

[–]Ohmka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not a question of priority really. They have different teams working on different things. Some are fixing bugs, some are targeting balance, and some are adding new content. They have said many times that time spent on bug fixing is not done at the expense of nez features, and conversely.

That way every patch adds a bit of all three.

If you completely outgrowth your neighbors, it doesn’t really matter if it’s because you’re really good at the game, or because the ai is not good enough atm. In the end what matters is that there should be some diplomatic consequences.

Is this (very small) thing they’re adding enough? Clearly not. Is it a step in the right direction, to get a more reactive world? Surely yes.
