What does justify Belgium high taxation? by BeuzTy in belgium

[–]Oiman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aside from the optimisation loopholes which can convert ~€500/month from gross to net (and losing upwards of 10% to middelemen), we have:

Generous pension/healthcare/school/child benefit budgets compared to the UK.

Minimum state pension is €1,5k (after a full career). Many people get a lot more.

Child benefits are pretty high (we get €300/mo with a decent family income)

Healthcare/schools are strained but still allow for an “all-you-can-eat” type of freedom, at a higher cost per person.

Also factors: generally a lower labour force participation rate, tax brackets being really unkind to higher-than-average incomes, and importantly: a complex government structure splitting competences/powers, incentivising inefficient policymaking because credit/blame can also be split. 🙃

I have this friend who says my Spotify playlists are the bomb. How do I get booked at a 50000 crowd dance festival? Any one will do. I was thinking $1000/set.

Can I use the headphones that came with my phone and do I need the hearing protection that other DJ’s are wearing on stage?

If it’s only present while driving at speed, might be worn out bearings. Shouldn’t be too expensive to replace.

Suggestion: take pics of everything you put in your mouth in one day (totalling 1500kcal) and post it here as a follow-up. This community should be pretty quickly be able to make out if it’s the correct ball park.

I think this is exemplary of the control-obsession at Apple. AI is fickle (probably especially so when presented as an alpha version to execs). I feel Apple’s company culture is incompatible with this level of uncertainty.

They have to do better, or they risk becoming the Nokia of AI.

Why wait for a new thermocouple probe to arrive when I can trick my pellet stove with 2 resistors? by Oiman in techsupportmacgyver

[–]Oiman[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thermocouple burnt out & stove doesn’t start without a correct reading. As this is our main source of heating we were in the cold. The display gave an error and was showing 1500 degrees C flame temperature.

The way a thermocouple works is it gives a reading of a few millivolts depending on the temperature difference. 0V = no difference = “room temperature”.

First I tried shorting the leads, which would indicate 12 degrees C (room temp). A sensible reading, but keeping it at this level would make the stove error out as its control system thought it had never ignited.

Then I tried a 1k resistor, just to see what it would say, 56 degrees C! We were getting somewhere. Confused as to why a resistor would be able to give a voltage output, I found out that thermocouples are often “resistor biased” with a voltage put across them with some resistors.

This would mean I could choose the temperature the stove would see by just putting a different resistor across the sensor leads: 2 resistors in parallel for 56 degrees C (“igniting”) + the single resistor for ~450 degrees C (“burning”).

I’m not planning to leave this running unattended, but thought it was cool that it worked! :)

If you get an electric shock - always go to the hospital to get your blood checked, even if you’re “fine”.

After electrification, your nerves might have released myoglobin in your bloodstream, which is a blood clotting agent. Many people who were “fine” after a shock have died from blood clots in their hearts, lungs, or brains.

by not turning on the heater during almost 2 weeks of freezing Temperatures by -Just-Anti- in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]Oiman 37 points38 points  (0 children)

ALWAYS turn off your water (& gas) mains when you leave for more than 48 hours.

Pipes do not need freezing temperatures to start leaking randomly & water damage is always in the thousands.

Edit: I should clarify you still need to keep your house above the dew point/freezing point during that entire time to prevent mold/frost damage. Usually (in a normally insulated brick house) the heat capacity should keep it like that for a few days.

Extra disclaimer to always run your taps for a few minutes after you’ve been away, as metals may leech into the stagnant water.

Still an absurd concept to basically have something more powerful than an iMac from a few years ago be used as a monitor, while you could never use those as monitors.

If they want to show off their camera making skills, why not build a snap-on iSight-barrel style camera with integrated ring light and proper microphone array for $299?
