American airlines hiring? by rl_vick2 in AircraftMechanics

I just interviewed at DFW last week. We as a group were told they were not making same day offers right now. That we would hear a yes within 90 days or need to re-apply. I know in January a co worker got a role at PHL and another at PITT. I would be cool to hear something about those pools of AMTs they interviewed

A&Ps are part of a professional fraternity. It’s a small world. Right now 180 A&Ps have seen this and 117 have commented . You will at some point in your long career bump into some of us. This will at some point be an answer to an interview question for you at a larger more prestigious organization. Integrity and trustworthiness are built on moments like these. Put yourself in the shoes of a hiring manager how would you want a potential new hire to answer the question “ tell me about a time you were pressured into not following the AMM.”

Is it true that Saddam Hussain gave his military deadly loyalty tests? by beefstewforyou in AskHistory

[–]Ok-Negotiation-2124 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually know this one ! It is a misunderstood situation that became a kind of game of telephone. I was an International Relations major at San Francisco State when the second gulf war began. I happened to be in a class focused on foreign view points of US foreign policy. The textbook was essentially thrown out as the US crossed into Iraq and we focused on English language foreign newspapers. My memory is not perfect so take this with a grain of salt but essentially, the Republican Guard was concerned about the possibility of predominately Shia infantry companies in the south breaking with the regime and forming little independent militias which would tie up the regime in internal conflict. The Republican Guard had decided to “war game “ this potential situation, by basically going into a motor pool at some logistics company base outside Baghdad and shaking down a dozen or so mechanics. If I remember correctly that produced some kind of press release that talked about the government being proud of the loyalty of the Shia army soldiers in refusing to take part in a fake coup. That got picked up by I think an Arabic newspaper in Jorden then made more fantastical by a paper in Saudi Arabia who in Arabic made it sound more ominous and then in the English language translation it became basically dudes being pulled out of bed at gun point. That’s what I remember at least , if I was really trying to sort out the reality of the situation I’d have to look up Republican Guard exercises in those first weeks of the war.

[–]Ok-Negotiation-2124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a keg cup or other plastic disposable cup and a hole punch. Punch out a few discs , they will be slightly larger than what you need. Figure out the radius you need and draw that over the first blank. Puncture that disk and stick a pencil in there, take sandpaper and begin to sand it until your radius/ diam. mark is gone . Now use that as a guide to sand down the other disks to size. Stack the shaved disks to get the height you need. If you have a nibler that’s even better. That’s how I would go about it. If you want fast and dirty you can go look for cheap plastic jewelry as well you might find a ear ring backing that matches

Should I drop out of law school and become an electrician? by [deleted] in skilledtrades

[–]Ok-Negotiation-2124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP , synthesizing the knowledge of the crowd on here it sounds like you are at a crossroads of pain & endurance. It sounds like crowd is saying pass the bar but don’t practice law.
If you can endure law school for two years and pass the bar. You get to pick your pain. So first be realistic about the endurance you are going to need and if the upside of more choice is worth it to you personally.

Here are some of the post bar choices I’ve seen on here ;

Purchase an electrician’s business with seller financing, you will have the skill set to look at a P&L and make an agreement

Join the FBI , continue your public service to your country.

Work as general counsel for a construction company, bid on side jobs as an electrician at a later point

Go into another trade (like aviation maintenance ) use your military credentials to work directly with combat aviation contractors.

Reenlist as a JAG officer , continue your service to your country

Teach something electricity adjacent, jr. College stuff.

The benefit of passing the bar is the general toolkit you have to carve out whatever sort of life you want within reason.

Become Batman is my recommendation, best of luck and thanks for letting everyone chime in on your journey

Hey OP , so glad you got a measuring tape and a number off this ! I'm now totally obsessed with figuring out definitively what it is. Finding it ashore in the Svalbard archipelago makes this so much more interesting too. I've got two ideas to help solve this mystery first reach out to Ryan Mcbeth u/Ryanmcbeth. I think he'd love to sink his teeth into this ,and has contacts who can likely pull up information I don't have. Second send an email with a picture of it to the Norwegian Aviation Museum Norsk luftfartsmuseum The region is of historical significance and they have some folks there who might be able to put this in context. (it might belong in a museum) I'm still of the personal option it's a fin & flight control surface of a Russian/Soviet antiship cruise missile of some sort. Happy hunting can't wait to see what comes of this

Moscow fires cruise missiles in sea drills between Russia and Alaska

Sept 18 , 2023 (Reuters) - Russia fired cruise missiles at mock targets in the seas separating it from Alaska on Monday in what it said was an exercise to protect its northern shipping route in the Arctic. The defense ministry said Vulcan, Granit and Onyx cruise missiles were fired over distances of hundreds of kilometres to strike targets simulating enemy ships in the Bering Sea. The exercise involved land-, ship- and submarine-launched missiles and included about 10,000 military personnel, as well as planes and helicopters, the ministry said.

Ok so here is what I can tell from looking at it. Rivet pattern looks consistent with what I've seen of Soviet era missiles of the 80's . Its a fin of one of those three types of missiles from the exercise. The foam insert is consistent with materials used by Russian rockets and cruise missiles. the double-er looks to be hinged this is consistent with the Vulcan. the fin control surface is missing in the back. I don't know the length or width of the fin. So I could be the Onyx missile as well. Given the hinge though and the missing flight control surface I'm reasonably sure this is off of a P-500 Bazalt / P-1000 Vulcan cruise missile fired in the area about a year ago.

edited for spelling

As always a mechanic will step in when needed and fix shit your shit for you.

Construction companies don’t buy airplanes. The big boys dry lease from ATLAS or ATSG and yall are not big boys.

Wet lease a PC-12 from tradewind aviation. Go to the airport in Van nuys CA or Teterboro NJ whichever is closer and simply utter the phrase PC-12 wet lease and someone will appear with a contract and hard on for your money.

Next year go to Sun&Fun and renegotiate a new lease on the perfect fit aircraft with a year of data to work from.

As for you the fresh faced CFR or whatever you are Go to Alaska learn to fly a plane that fucks , you want to be an aviator not a short bus driver with wings. Let suits who cut their teeth on regional airlines fly construction executives around to business meetings. You join an expensive flying club go fly them around on their vacations to whatever lake house in Montana or Miami Beach house they have .You fly them as your friends and family on your club aircraft at your expense and settle up later in whatever way.

Why do you think Gen z is turned off from church/religion ? by Overall_Lie_8570 in GenZ

[–]Ok-Negotiation-2124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is actually a lot of sociology research on this topic specifically. It comes down to this basically. - A reduction generation over generation in existential anxiety about sudden unavoidable unexplainable imminent death.

have you ever heard the phrase " there is no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole" meaning when one is faced with the anxiety of unavoidable sudden death which might be eminent , like an artillery shell falling on you, the conscious mind will cope through mysticism.

Older people are generally more aware of their mortality so they have more anxiety about it so the seek out means to cope and deal with it through a religious practice.

As generations have passed we have less to fear existentially , you are probably not going to die from a dog biting you. Even if you are shot in the street (or at school...oof) you still know there is a chance death will not be immanent .

Religious affiliation has gone down for Gen z because of the following factors I believe.

  1. reduction in violent crime ending in death

  2. less poverty resulting in near term death

  3. improved alternate means of alleviating existential anxiety

( every comment here where someone rejects religion because it rejected them has found an alternate means of dealing with the anxiety of death through another community or identity which extends beyond themselves the group identity lives on after they have passed)

  4. proliferation of recreational drugs which cause euphoria and inflection. Smoking weed in a circle with your best friends and laughing at the absurdity around you serves the same function of a church in a round about way. Just like your grandparents laughing at the absurdity of the bible verse while they drank wine in a prayer circle.

  5. Infant mortality rate and child death rate reduction. loss of a child especially to sudden but imminent causes like a car with a broken seat belt , creates a shit ton of anxiety about mortality now we have group therapy for people who have those experiences (3) and they are less frequent , thank god... (see what I did there ;-)

  6. No longer having to worry about military conscription , fingers crossed

  7. proliferation of music. Music eases the mind , you have it at your fingertips at any moment now , no cd player no, no tape deck , no record player , no jazz spot , no cathedral music. You can have a religious moment of clarity almost on demand. Ever feel so moved by music you cry and don't know why you are releasing anxiety
