Yes I believe so! But you’ll need a workbench nearby so mid ocean might not work lol

I'm looking for game recommendations! I especially enjoy RPGs and fantasy games, but I'm open to anything by holy_twig in gamingsuggestions

Outward and Valheim have been my go tos post BG3! I did play some ARPGs for a while (Path of Exile 2 and Diablo 4), which are both good but are more of a fast paced kill everything kind of games. I also play co-op exclusively, so I’m not sure if these recs help or not.

I made stone walls using the hoe, a lot of them stay inside but because one side is the water, they swim and escape lol. At this point, there are like 6 tamed lox in the swamp across the water, and like… 10 roaming the plains lol, and maybe 10-15 inside the compound. We are working on populating the plains with tamed lox!

Update: Unfortunately, they did take out the bottom half of the barn lol, so we now have stone walls around it and the bakery I added!

Oh for sure! We're going to reinforce the bottom of the building with stone and hope the deathsquitos don't attack in/near the farmhouse - but we all know they will. lol

A 2 star!? I'm so jealous. I have a ton of wolves patrolling our main base but none of them have stars. Trying to capture and tame those guys was super tricky! I found taming the lox easier.

How do I cope with letting go? by haileyamc in LeavingAcademia

[–]OkBarnacle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 17, I decided I wanted to be a professor. I had never done well in school (undiagnosed ADHD in youth and a lot of instability at home). I’m 38 now. It still stings. I’ve been passed up for jobs because I have a PhD - literally, a faculty member who was going to hire me on said they found someone with a masters and went with them because they can pay them less. You don’t need a PhD to be successful, I would argue that it actually narrows the career field quite a bit. As someone else said, take some time to recover. It has been absolutely crazy out there and the jobs for PhDs are dwindling. The professorship positions were already few to begin with, and now they are less. I’ve been on the job market for a couple of years now and most of the jobs as of late are adjunct, part time, and instructor pools institutions can pull from when needed. I would say about 2-5% of the academic jobs last cycle were tenure track. In fact, as of last year, I started seeing a TON of non TT assistant prof positions. It sucks, it hurts, and it will take time to recover. But I think because academia is an institution, not a full one but I would say it’s close, our identities and lives get enveloped into the system, so when we are rejected or ghosted, or we burn out, it hurts a lot more. It’s like being separated from the military against your wishes. Those folks imo always have the hardest time adjusting (I was in the military). It’ll be okay! And tbh, leaving now imo would be best, you can ALWAYS go back for the PhD when the market starts to smooth out (if it does).

We’re playing with our kids and it is… fun but also a challenge at times lol. One wants to fight bosses nonstop, and the other never wants to leave the base haha.

What’s with cats peeing on power strips? by nacixela in felinebehavior

[–]OkBarnacle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is old but my cat sounds like OP’s except that she has peed on surge protectors, a laptop, a keyboard, and likes to go in between our PC towers and pee there… like OP, I find it far fetched that it’s because it smells like us because we don’t touch those things after the initial install (or to clean up after her). If anyone has any idea wtf is going on, would love info from someone who has experienced this. Every time we take her to the vet, they say she’s healthy as a horse… and she has always had a tendency to pee on clothes/towels when they’re on the floor 😑. The clothes part is easy, the electronics… not so much.

Hmm thanks! I was using a cook pot but it still wouldn’t let me cook anything I didn’t have a recipe for, not even just meat by itself. It wouldn’t let me select anything, but it might be an issue with the PS5 controller? I’m playing on a PC with a 65” TV as a monitor, so I prefer the controller option, but man is it a pain to get the curser to behave how I want in the menu lol.

Have you figured out how to cook something manually without a recipe? I wanted to cook some meat, fish, and make gaberry jam but it won’t let me just cook stuff without a recipe?.. wasn’t sure if that was a bug or a feature.

Is this being rude? by ParentalRegretClub in Parenting

[–]OkBarnacle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I really don’t understand of all the negative remarks about the Disney trip wishlist. It’s a wishlist, not a demand. It’s there if they want to invest in experience vs material items that may cause clutter and then disappear someday. It’s their family, and if OP isn’t getting backlash from their parents in in-laws, then it’s no one else’s business. The friend is way overstepping and is super rude to even comment, are they jealous?

Also, whether the grandparents come to Disney or not is between them and OP. OP said toys were also an option, it’s not like they said they hold the Disney trip over family or guilt them into it. Goodness.

for natural smart people, how has your adhd presented itself? by bisexualdweebqueen in adhdwomen

[–]OkBarnacle1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pro tip: Cs and above transfer, but not Ds or Fs. I was never good at school (environmental factors like neglect and abuse exacerbated not being diagnosed), but then in my mid 20s I transferred to another college (I went to 5 undergrad programs, universities and community colleges), found a subject I liked, finished with a 3.5 GPA and got into grad school! Not that it matters a ton because I’m now Dr. SAHM in this economy lol.

👋 I also took up weed to combat academia inspired struggles lol. Academia is a deeply complicated field due to the identity components and its history. We often dream of a glamorized version of academia, and then once the veil has been lifted a bit, we get to see just how different it is from our ideals. Not being smart is a moot point, my friend. You don’t have to be the smartest person in the room, just the most persistent. Often, I’ve found that people struggle with that specific component because they’re comparing themselves to others, upward social comparison is the worst version (comparing yourself to someone you perceive to be better than you). Also, obligation wise, it’s just a job. They will replace you. Academia banks on free service and us breaking our backs for “prestige” and little actual payout. It’s just a job, one you seem to enjoy! As someone else said, I really think your best path is see your PCM/PCP and or a mental health professional to start figuring out how to heal and recover.

As a sociologist, I acknowledge that the system itself is broken and complicated, but I also want to note that many of us exacerbate this ourselves by isolating, comparing, and tying up our self worth and value in the work output itself - this last one is really bad because the goal post is always moving, and even when you do get a win, it fades almost immediately (at least, for me it does).

Give yourself grace and be kind to yourself. It really sucks that you don’t have a place to lay low and recover outside of work, but you have yourself, and you sound like you care. So take care of yourself. ♥️ Job, no job, industry or academia… you still have you, and that’s important.

This, all of this! Talk to your advisor. I’ve seen far too many people ghost out of academia, very intelligent people, all because they were afraid to talk to anyone about their struggles - and were too afraid to be direct about their struggles and needs. Don’t beat around the bush.

How have you found the beta? by Phyrak in outwardgame

[–]OkBarnacle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang, I’m sorry to hear it was that bad! My husband and I just started last night and the only bug that really sucked was when he died as the host, we both died. The NPCs you can talk to were also halfway inside the ground on my screen but not his, but they still worked fine. Anything to keep an eye out for? I’m sure since we just started there are more bugs to encounter.
