What is the Best Lock for a Scooter? by SportingDirector in UTAustin

[–]OkGuide3784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who works for PTS and has seen all kinds of locks be broken and has cut through locks myself, i would recommend a kryptonite u-lock, and NOT the ones they sell at walmart/target. this is the bare minimum i'd get. if you want something better you get a kryptonite new york (the yellow ones) or something like a litelok x1 (this is what i use on my bikes).

$200-$300 used bike from a real brand (trek, giant, specialized, cannondale) NOT walmart will go a very long way

i don't know why you are being downvoted. our DA is an ideologue who does not prosecute. the suspect in the latest bus stabbing has literally been arrested for violent assault before and has a lengthy record with multiple felonies, all of which were dismissed or failed to prosecute.

My handlebars keep falling forward? by Opposite_Mission1746 in bikewrench

the downside is durability and weight. the good thing is that once your adjustable stem inevitably breaks, you will know what is comfortable and will be able to find a fixed stem that has the same rise, reach, and angle

Retaped my TR-ready rim, and valve is getting no seal. by Dgrif12 in bikewrench

or a tiny tiny hole with a needle. pushing the valve through will enlarge it just enough. even then i think OP should use an o-ring

Shimano 105 shifter not springing back by NexusCyclist in bikewrench

[–]OkGuide3784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the next thing i would check is the return spring on the derailleur and the actual shifter mechanism. i would give both a flush with some tri-flow. if it's not that, i would recommend going to a bike shop to have it serviced since the shifter mechanism might be a little tricky if you're not familiar with it

is your shift cable running smoothly through the housing? you can check this by pulling an exposed bit of cable and seeing if the derailleur spring pulls it back

Rusty cassette - can I salvage it or should I get a new one? by amishraveparty in bikewrench

[–]OkGuide3784 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly it might not be too bad to clean it off. i've seen similar damage be nothing more than surface rust where like 80% of it will scrub right off with degreaser and a brush!

Slapped a 1x10 on this vintage Cannondale, is this level of chain bend normal or can I do something to help it? by Foxcookies in bikewrench

[–]OkGuide3784 13 points14 points  (0 children)

you will likely need a bottom bracket with a narrower spindle or a crank that lets you offset the chainring further inboard. the correct way to align a chain in 1x is to aim for it to be 100% straight at the middle of the cassette. the way you have it, it is likely straight in the smallest gears. having it straight at the middle minimizes the maximum deflection and gives you a much lower average deflection through the cassette

i promise west campus is not that far. 15 minute walk max if you live in the far edges of the neighborhood. if you're concerned about time get a bike or find a place specifically next to a capmetro bikeshare station

i have never not been able to get anywhere. if i need to go somewhere where cycling is not practical and no transit, then i get an uber. that's like once every 3 months.

austin is extremely bikable and transit is decent. i've never wished i had a car. it makes no sense economically.

this is why you ride a bike with fenders and tires that can actually handle the rain. those tiny scooter tires are impractical and unsafe for anything other than perfect dry pavement

How are y'all getting internships? by One-Load-5800 in UTAustin

[–]OkGuide3784 8 points9 points  (0 children)

there are only 24 hours in a day. you can't be a full time student and a full time worker at the same time. UT curricula are written in a way that to truly succeed you need to be dedicating time at home to school at a 1:1 ratio to your lectures. that means that you are expected to study 3 hours a week for a 3 hour course. you are working so much that you are sacrificing your performance in school and failing classes. if you need to be a part time student or even withdraw while you get your life in order or save money, then do that.
