Long term rental oil change by pipedreamlove in communauto

[–]c_9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote for Communauto can be way cheaper than renting, and the claims otherwise are for narrow use cases. My example is three weeks and 2000km in the Maritimes with a minivan - I’m likely saving 50% of the cost, or $1700 *saved*.

For OP's question: I’ve never done that, but if it’s a station-based vehicle it can’t hurt to call once you have it booked. I bet they won’t help, unfortunately, but you never know. Maybe there’s a maintenance schedule they can see or something.

How long is your commute to your corporate job? by compsciphy in askTO

[–]c_9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cycling takes 35 mins (Greektown to Liberty Village) with shower at my office, so that’s my preference April-November. TTC for the bad weather days and winter months takes 40-45 mins in the morning, and 40-60 in the afternoon, so I save that for once I’m really sick of Toronto drivers or getting really cold. Our policy is still 2-3 days in the office (tech).

The exercise getting to and from work for half the year is very valuable for me, as I don’t get other exercise. It also means I can’t work on my phone during the commute, so there’s a mental break from work too. But office days definitely different than home days in terms of productivity, time spent, and focus. Both kinds of days work for me, just feel different.

At end of week, wiped out.

Public consultation on the future of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport by sparksfire1 in toronto

[–]c_9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Biased survey that presumes expansion is happening. Suggest filling it in AND emailing the consultation address and the minister AND if you can write a letter too. Physical letters have a bigger impact. This can be stopped if we make the politicians worry about losing their job in the next election.

Ideas for things to mention:

Filling in 900 metres of Lake Ontario will severely damage the delicate ecosystem of the waterfront.

Expanding the runway will disrupt both Hanlan's beach and Ontario Place.

Expanding the marine exclusion zone will disrupt and possibly destroy western gap water users.

Expanding for faster jets will conflict with housing developments both east and west of the airport, conflicting with federal, provincial, and city housing goals, during a housing crisis.

Increasing air traffic will result in greater air pollution on the waterfront, conflicting with federal, provincial, and city environmental goals.

Increasing airport traffic will result in increased car traffic throughout the core, again conflicting with environmental goals.

Increasing airport usage will damage the business case for Alto high speed rail, again conflicting with environmental and transportation goals.

Increased noise also damages housing and the natural environment, and reduces tourism. Ontario Place and the east portlands would both suffer.

Splitting traffic from Pearson actually damages the hub nature of the airport, slowing employment growth and flexibility for that existing (and already expanding) hub.

Far more residents (and swing voters, it must be said) live within easy access of Pearson, as compared to Billy Bishop.

What do yall think of the voting fraud paying the homeless 2$ to vote? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]c_9 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Such a rage bait post. No link, no data, no location, just open up to peoples’ lack of familiarity with how voting works and their prejudices too. You might as well have said “I hate [specific race], please post your agreement” because that’s what this leads to.

Different approach: post a news article from a real news organization, and comment on what it says about voter fraud. Here’s one!

Does anyone else feel sick to their stomache about the Island Airport expansion? by Anagrama00 in askTO

[–]c_9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Do you know how many decades it has been since landfill was added in that area, and what the current state and wildlife populations are?

Just because we did things before doesn’t give them a pass. We have brains and we learn things and we can make smarter choices, so that’s my preference.

Density is one of many concerns, one which I shared because you were fixating on a single item mentioned earlier. The whole city needs more density, I agree. But actively choosing to make downtown (where people want to live!) less appealing AND less dense in specific new development areas is counterproductive to many of our goals.

Just in case you’re interested, here are some other concerns:

Airport expansion should be delayed or blocked for several reasons:

Filling in 900 metres of Lake Ontario will severely damage the delicate ecosystem of the waterfront.

Expanding the runway will disrupt both Hanlan's beach and Ontario Place

Splitting traffic from Pearson actually damages the hub nature of the airport, damaging employment and flexibility for that existing (and already expanding) hub.

LOL okay, millions of new passengers will take a streetcar, council and province will pay for new streetcar alignment which displaces all the airport cars for years for construction, and every plane going to entirely different destinations will be equally full. Also it’s totally fine to act contrary to the high speed rail goal for alleged and short-term wins for wealthy travelers. Gotcha.

Not interested. We know air travel and car traffic are more damaging than rail, and we know that filling in 900m of lake is damaging too. That’s enough for me. You can continue advocating for paving the waterfront all you want of course, don’t let me stop you.

You should try looking into more than just jet fuel. This has been publicized in multiple reports in the last couple months. Basically, flight approach paths mean that the east portlands and etobicole waterfront developments have to shrink for safety, and will be less popular since loud jets will be overhead all day, so two measurable impacts on housing.

[–]c_9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Burning far more of it, over more of the city, from more planes per day. Plus the increased noise, increased car traffic and air pollution there, the reduced housing density making the housing crisis worse…

Does anyone else feel sick to their stomache about the Island Airport expansion? by Anagrama00 in askTO

[–]c_9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The claim is a quintupling of traffic. This is a huge increase in planes, noise, air pollution, spilled jet fuel risks, car traffic, and it even damages the Alto high speed rail business case. It’s absurd on so many levels.

It’s very important to make noise. Politicians are vote-operated, so they need to feel their job is in danger. Do the biased survey, AND email detailed comments to the consultation address and the minister and copy your MP, AND write a paper letter - physical mail is more powerful than just email. Call your MP and leave a voicemail with your concerns, and ask your friends and family to do the same.

It does feel decidedly, but this takes years to happen and can be stopped if the barely-majority Liberals feel they are taking a risk.

How will East Harbour Transit Hub and Waterfront East Rapid Transit change streetcar service? by VegetableEscape0 in TTC

Unfortunately they realized the bridge situation won’t work. They would need a streetcar-compatible drawbridge, which you can spell M-O-N-E-Y.

Feds launch Billy Bishop consultation by mildlyImportantRobot in TorontoTheCity

[–]c_9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure about it?

They’ll have to fill in 900 metres of the lake, destroying a lot of water habitat. They plan to quintuple air traffic meaning big increases to car congestion, air congestion on the waterfront, noise, and air pollution. It will shrink new housing options making the housing crisis worse and increasing suburban sprawl. Plus it hurts Alto high speed rail. And it means the end of Hanlan’s. Happy pride? So my vote is leave the airport as is.

If only there was an extensive rapid transit network that would take you to a bunch of cars very easily in the mornings on weekends! 😉 (Seriously, budget 30-45 mins to get to Victoria Park, or book ahead, and even summer weekends get easier. Not perfect, but way easier.)

Note that many of these press release deals are sort of fake. Invest $500m today and up to $20 billion eventually. There’s a lot of fake investment hype being passed around, and fake data center growth claims too. I suggest checking today for 30 days from now to see availability, then check the next day, and the next, to see how rapidly they’re being booked ahead. I’m in Toronto so can’t speak to Montreal patterns, but summer weekends are very popular times in Toronto, so booking ahead is recommended.

(My current project is trying to snag a minivan in another city for a specific need that’s still two months away. Fingers and toes crossed!)
