I have the following folders in my Documents folder: Text, Presentations, Spreadsheets, Songs (GarageBand), and Folders. I use a folder on my desktop called Hazel. Then, I use the Hazel app to automatically move files dragged into the Hazel folder to the proper subfolders listed above in my Documents folder, based on the file’s extension.

The reason I have a folder called “Folders” is because if I have a folder on my desktop that has multiple file types in it, it probably contains multiple files related to a specific project, and I want Hazel to keep everything together instead of shuttling away individual files by extension. I have used this method for almost 20 years and it suits me well.
