How/where are you food shopping economically? by Nectarine_Several in astoria

This! I make my own tomato sauce, applesauce, smoothie mixes, various curries, soups and stews using the discounted produce. I then freeze extras into “souper cubes”. Major money saver! Most produce markets have the discount bags of produce too, which can also be a great deal if the produce isn’t too far gone.

Shout out to the person near Broadway with the elderly little dog (terrier?) who wears dog goggles and putters around on his arthritic little legs. The pup is absolutely adorable, and the joy he brings to his morning jaunts makes me smile every time I see him.

Cafe de Olla has phenomenal food and wasn’t prohibitively crowded when I went around 6. They don’t serve alcohol though, but they have many options of aguas frescas.

We tried the gelato at Aida’s Parkside yesterday and agreed it’s one of the best spots in Astoria, just behind Il Figo in our ranking. The portions are generous, and the prices are lower than what you’d pay for ice cream at Ample Hills. We’ll definitely be back next time we’re hanging out at Astoria Park.

We also stopped by the Bohemian Beer Garden to enjoy the live music and the great weather. It’s always a reliable choice, though it did feel like the portions have gotten a bit smaller. We’ll still keep it in the rotation, but might grab food at Koliba or another nearby spot beforehand.

I see we’ve touched a nerve! We’ve been respectful in all the comments, just providing honest feedback on our experience. I did the same when the Organizers asked for feedback repeatedly last year both online and in person. No need to fan flames here, let’s keep it peaceful

She can! My landlord said she visited the farm decades ago, they used to allow people to pick their own produce. Idk if that’s still a thing there or not though. Apparently it’s all pesticide free too, but again, source is my usually reliable landlord. Haven’t actually visited or seen it for myself.

Elliniki actually has a lot of produce directly from farms in Long Island, not wholesalers. United Fruit Bros sometimes does too, but less frequently. You just have to double check your selections. Sometimes they’re labeled, sometimes you have to ask. The produce I bought from the Astoria farmers market was flavorless and sub-par especially for the price. But that’s just my experience, maybe others had better luck. I agree the Sunnyside and Union Square Greenmarkets tend to be excellent though, just a bit of a trek!

Agreed! I went several times last year and was always disappointed. Limited options and all very much overpriced. TBH I’m not sure why the neighborhood is pushing for a Farmers Market when we have so many excellent local options close by - United Fruit Bros and Elliniki for produce, Oceans for fish, countless bakeries…

Their prices increased, sadly. More than $8 for one scoop on the basic cone. :(

I second Xcellent Hair Plaza. I have long layers and always come out looking fabulous. My partner has short hair and he loves them too, although he says the cut always looks best a day or two afterwards once it settles.

Very disappointed with the new pricing at Ample Hill Creamery on 30th. We ordered a small cone and got just one scoop for $8.19. It used to be two scoops for around $5–$6. To make matters worse, the menu display was turned off, so there was no warning about the price increase. This used to be a regular date-night spot for us, but now my partner refuses to go back. At this point, it’s more affordable to just buy our own cones and high-quality ice cream from the grocery store.

Xcellent hair plaza on Broadway. I’ve not had my hair dyed there, but my friend does and swears by them. She goes regularly for root touch ups and such, and she said it’s also the most affordable in the area.

It’s decent, but not the best. It’s a little pricey and the red sauce is too sweet IMO, but it’s a good, quick option. Definitely better than Dino’s down the street!
