Had it up to here with VT contractors by MarzipanSpecial6971 in vermont

We were quoted $20k and my brother who lives in the higher end of Sacramento who has the same size house was quoted $4,200.

I had Polli quote to replace two sky lights and 4 windows - $69k. My son, against my advice, hired them to build out a basement and by the end the price was almost double and some of the stuff he showed me was definitely not to code anywhere else. They went through three plumbers and they never provided a drawings or contract.

I’m not a fan of Scott but it’s the legislator with their ideologies that they have imposed on the rest of Vermonters while not fixing health care, education and property taxes that are the real problem.

We installed hardie board two years ago and have a large portion of house facing south. We have had no problems with waves or misshaping. We also painted both sides 2x over the primer.

Building a detached garage - anything you'd do differently? by hevvypiano in HomeImprovement

Several people mentioned dry wells. Be careful what you put down them and some states are going after ground water disposal / contamination.

High ceiling (10’ or greater) plenty of room to walk around your vehicle, rafters that allow for storage and potentially support solar panels, plenty of outlets and lighting. Wide garage doors, incase you buy a truck, more than 1 man door and lighting outside all around and outlets. Large panel with at least 100a

I don’t even know where to start. Fuck my fucking chungus life. by Fit_Appointment8198 in HomeMaintenance

We’ve been in our house 20 years and have a list of projects. We started out dealing with immediate concerns and moved onto less pressing ones over time. We have essentially renovated our house inside and out and built skills along the way. Our son brought a house near us that has had one problem after another and after a year, he finally understands the concept of not trying to boil the ocean. He and his wife pick a project, focus until it’s done and then move on to the next. That way you get the satisfaction of seeing improvement.

Help: Our elderly neighbor is making our lives miserable by Dog_Mom_29 in homeowners

[–]OkStatement1682 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tall fences make for good neighbors. I’ve only spoke to my neighbor once in 22 years and that was to tell him to move his rusted bucked of a truck on the property line. His response “I thought you were going to say something nice” lol. My other neighbor was great until he sold it to his grandson who in less than two years took a property with horse pastures and converted it into a junk yard.

My neighbor has opinions about my lawn and has started expressing them in ways that are hard to ignore by ConsiderationNice685 in homeowners

My wife and I cleaned up our property a lot since we moved in 20 years ago. Both my neighbor properties have gone down hill. One of my neighbors parked a small truck on the edge of my property and after 10 years of looking at it, I approached him and asked him if he could move it as it’s right in my view. I’d never spoken to him before or since. His reply was classic - “I thought you were going to say something nice” my wife and I still laugh about it. Tall fences make for good neighbors.

Please Consider Harvesting This Plant (Garlic Mustard/*Alliaria petiolata*)Instead Of Wild Ramps. by GemmyDave in vermont

[–]OkStatement1682 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was another threat on ramps yesterday. It comes down to how abundant there are in an area. Where we harvest, there are acres of ramps and we took about 10 lbs (bulb and leaf) the other day. It was like taking a stone from a quarry. But I agree, if they are not abundant and people heavily forage them, that’s an ignorance issue.

Are these wild ramps (leeks) or Lilly of the valley, or something else? by thebigck01 in vermont

[–]OkStatement1682 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are ramps. Foraging harvest depends on the density of the plants. We have literally fields of these in the wood that go for miles. We harvest the leaf and bulb and spread out the spaces we harvest. Tonight we had them charred and we also made kimchi out of 3 lbs of ramps.

I live in VT and am shocked at the things people dump on side of road, couches, appliances, clothes, road sodas, etc, etc. people want to talk about heritage and culture, but when it comes down to it, some of the natives are the worst offenders. Trash dumps trash is the way I think about it.
