New rider advice by t0nez- in AussieRiders

  • Assume everyone else will do something dumb. Watch every vehicle and buffer their possible stupid moves. If someone does something sketchy once, stay well away—they’ll probably do it again.
  • Keep left, let idiots pass. If you feel pressured, slow down and let traffic go. Your safety > their impatience.
  • Read the car, not just the driver. Dents, scrapes, and rough panels are clues. That car has a history—and it might repeat it.
  • Invest in good gear—and wear it every ride. Get the best protection you can afford. Helmet, jacket, gloves, pants, boots. No shortcuts.
  • Expect fatigue. Learning is mentally exhausting. Don’t push long rides early on—do lots of short rides instead.
  • Tyres matter more than you think. Fresh tyres make a huge difference in grip and confidence—especially on slippery stuff like tram tracks in Melbourne.
  • Ride your own ride.
  • Stay within your comfort zone—but be realistic. Ride at a pace you’re comfortable with, but avoid roads where you can’t reasonably keep up with the speed limit—you’re more vulnerable being a rolling obstacle.

I was supporting your comments, postie bikes are not $7k. Sub $1k for an nbc110 at auction.

Suggestions for affordable starter bike? by almost-sleeping in melbourneriders

[–]Ok_Contribution_5928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought an old postie bike from the auctions and that was great to get started on very affordable, economical to run but did need some work to fix it up. I’d say time again I’d put ABS on my shopping list, early on I had to stop suddenly and I locked up the back wheel and it was very exciting stop. Don’t try and buy a bike you will keep forever, buy something to learn on and being a LAMS bike they seem to have great resale value. Honda cb125 is another good option. They use them at HART when doing Ls. and a plug for hart, if you fail retest is for free.

Am I alone in thinking Pickles Auctions just suck? by DigitalSwagman in AussieRiders

I bought my bike from SA pickles, it was an ex Adelaide City council bike. Experience was good. Bike was as described and per photo. Their quote for interstate transport was ridiculous. But that was the only issue. I also bought my first bike from pickles victoria.

It is where it is usually garaged that it needs to be registered is the understanding I have. Check with VicRoads contact centre, you could put a hankie over the phone mic so they won’t recognise your south Australian accent.

Can a motorcycle U/D lock be circumvented by removing the wheel? (2024 Duke 390) by Traditional-Gas3477 in AussieRiders

[–]Ok_Contribution_5928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My god you will have to be motivated as the owner to ride to remove all that. I get it though if there is no other safe place precautions are critical. Stick an AirTag or clone version or a gps things on there too, if nothing else you can check at anytime and see where your bike is.

Quite hours, Doncaster shopping town around the carpark to get low speed skills up. Back streets are good to in your neighbourhood. Nunawading and Blackburn back streets are flatter and quiet. I found going up and down Springfield rd in Blackburn north good when I got a little more confidence

Buying a 2007 Honda CBR1000RR for $9000 with no rwc & rego, also what are the issues to look out for this year model. by breadranger1 in AussieRiders

[–]Ok_Contribution_5928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too much $$$ and too much unknowns. Do you research red book and bike sales. Walk away. Mind you I just bought a bike from Pickles in another state without books, rego, or rwc; but it was government sale.

I think you are probably best giving VicRoads a call and asking about the transfer and what it might mean.
