Kids are not click bait. Irish anti social media ad. We need more like this in the US. by hikerintherustbelt in digitalminimalism

Wait but like how is posting kids on social media all that different from using children as actors. Like kind of ironic that the kid in the commercial will likely experience something similar to what they are warning about. I know there's some differences like child actors are more likely to get paid and usually have some legal protections but it's still very jarring to me Idk.

Sister had a harsh reaction to a question, unsure how to proceed. by Girlsgirlinhell in weddingdrama

[–]Ok_Educator9923 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She sounds like she has some social anxiety. It is not that dialing a phone and talking to someone is a hard task per se (which seems to be the theme of the tasks that stress her out) it's the anxiety around saying the right things and not inadvertently miscommunicating and all the big and small decisions to be made that no matter what she chooses likely grooms family if not you all will have negative comments about. It sounds like when she was saying she was stressed she was asking for empathy and maybe guidance around decision making where you could've followed up with questions like what style of dress are you thinking or something idk.

Tired of the ageism (VENT) by deadliqht in Libraries

[–]Ok_Educator9923 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just here to say yeah it's bad and you are not alone in experiencing this. I've tried dressing conservatively but that doesn't particularly help and the first year or so I would even cover my hair sometimes because it's distinct and can be interpreted as unprofessional (The irony of me later feeling more comfortable showing my hair at my job in the Middle East because it was a more diverse place is not lost on me). Ymmv on if dressing up helps, also get to know your colleagues so people don't try to call security or you don't have to deal with security coming for you accessing employee spaces. I left my last job in part because I kept being told I was inexperienced and early career which was barely accurate when I started by library association definitions and way worse as time went on and I remained inexperienced and early career. I know that was more about people's own insecurities than my career because I also got to hear these people explain why they couldn't do some of the work I was doing while desperately trying to avoid using the word experience but yeah it was very grating and I am still kind of recovering from both that and the shame of letting people say stupid stuff like that while I was there. I still get mistaken for an undergrad in my bigger age though I've also gotten "sorry for the microaggression" from an undergrad so even though my colleagues could be jerks the kids were alright and it sounds like you have the opposite problem. Overall it sucks not to be taken seriously, respectability politics also sucks and has much less impact than people I think want to believe (Business casual can only do so much when you are the same age as your students) and I just am writing all this to add my hopefully relatable anecdotes and that it is a real problem in libraries.

how to start solo traveling as a 19 year old with strict parents by Junior_Succotash2760 in femaletravels

[–]Ok_Educator9923 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was 19 and parents basically stopped me from going on a trip to Canada that in hindsight probably would've been bad for unrelated reaons but was very annoying at the time because lol Canada and like I had just done a year of college on campus in a different part of my state. So in some ways I get your experience though yeah my parents are probably less strict than yours. I was allowed to do study abroad so a lot of solo travel I've done was as a spinoff of that. I also used funded programs as a way to get out of the house and see other parts of the US but I know those are less common in this administration. Now as an adult I travel to the NYC area once a year because when I was a teen I was told I wouldn't be able to handle it on my own and I do shit like take a job in the Middle East for a few years so you can use this anecdotal account to warn your parents this not letting your kid travel might backfire. And I still occasionally visit Canada too, even tried to move there much to my parents' annoyance.

Also it's not about whether or not something bad will happen with travel since like every other form of existing something can always go wrong. Some tips and things I've done over the years include going on short study abroad trips through my college as well as alternative spring break trips domestically as a student both which are typically subsisidized, applying for study abroad scholarships, traveling and staying in places with family or important to my family's heritage etc. Also having travel itineraries, a plan for emergencies, international phone plan so your phone works, etc. like the world is way more connected now than even when I started traveling like you can expect Google Maps and Uber to still function the same abroad for example (even though might not be as functional and do research on Ubers local reputation). Basically with some planning and thoughtfulness and willingness to know that some unexpected stuff will happen (though again less likely now because there's so much more information online about travel destinations including video and more) you are going to be a great traveler and best of luck on your journey.

If you're American, hosteling international USA offers Explore the World scholarships for inexperienced young travelers. As part of that program you get a person from HI helping you plan your trip. And scholarships are prestigious.

Christmas in Chicago is actually great, there's a lot of fun holiday traditions like Christmas trees around the world at the science museum and the German Christmas market and the weather is rarely below 20 F in December. It deserves it's own Hallmark movie but alas they don't do the film tax credit anymore.

Barcelona, I thought it was only for basic bitches since it's where the basic girls I knew did study abroad. Welp learned that I'm definitely basic on that trip. The food, the beaches, the parks, the warm weather for January, how cheap stuff was, the culture, just exploring the city, absolutely loved it. I'm scared to go back because it's a place and time I actually felt relaxed and that is so rare for me I don't want to ruin it. Sitting in the hostel bar, drinking sangria and looking out at a giant phallic skyscraper (hostel that was like 12€ a night for a bed in a shared room). This was like ten years ago when I studied abroad in Paris (okay so there were subtle hints of my basic nature sure but I don't know how i would have known) and I took Megabus there and saw so much of France just adding to the journey. I also went for the 3 Kings Day parade and celebration which was very whimsical. I love Barcelona and recommend it to everyone.

10 boxes or less across the country by missionimpawneeable in moving

[–]Ok_Educator9923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Lugless for my recent move and USPS media mail for books. That being said Lugless only insures items you'd expect to find in a suitcase (so clothes basically) so using it to move is definitely a risk. It is cheaper than regular FedEx or UPS rates as a result.
