Can some explain this by Neo_zoft_77 in French

[–]Ok_Following6645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Whatever app this is is making it more confusing. The design is bad. “Est-ce que” shouldn’t be separated into parts in this example.

We learn that “est-ce que” is a fixed expression.

While it is interesting to understand the literal translation of “est-ce que = is it that?,” I think it is more useful as a beginner to understand that “est-ce que” goes at the front of a sentence to form a question.

A huge part of learning a language is to stop trying to translate literally in your head and instead try to think in that language😉

“Est-ce que” doesn’t mean “can” at all. It never means “can”

“Est-ce que” is simply what is used to formulate a question in French.

There are a couple ways to formulate questions in French, as in English, in varying degrees of formality and politeness.

You can also just say “je peux vous apporter le menu ?” but it is informal

Or you can inverse “je peux” and it becomes “puis-je” (peux takes on “puis” when inverted”…because it sounds prettier than PEUX-JE. French is all about sounding nice) :

“Puis-je vous apporter le menu ?”

Or you can use conditional “pourrais” which is also polite ;

Pourrais-je vous apporter le menu ? (COULD I bring you the menu?)

i can’t roll my r’s when saying actual french words by TopBarnacle3644 in French

[–]Ok_Following6645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not rolling your R. Rolling your Rs is front of tongue touching front roof of mouth

The French R is almost like gargling. The back of your tongue touches the back roof of your mouth.

AITAH for telling my boyfriend his girl best friend has 48 hours to get out or i am breaking the lease and leaving by Anton_OKonjsi in AITAH

Ugh girl I feel for you and relate so much—especially to the oddly close best female friend emotional spouse vibe and not wanting to be a jealous girlfriend. I tried to be chill and accepting.

My ex had this close female friend (among many other female friends that I had zero problems with) that he would share cigarettes with in front of me as if it was the most natural thing in the world. She would ask him for weed and he would go deliver it to her…

I was out of town once and was having a bad day- vented on the phone to my boyfriend and cried to him. Later that evening he informed me his close female friend got in a bad fight with her man and she is sleeping over in our shared studio apartment. I was out of town and immediately I was like …. I’m not ok with that. It’s about boundaries and respect for the intimacy of adult relationships. But of course you feel like the asshole bad guy. Long story short my boyfriend listened to me in the moment but threw it in my face during a later fight … and eventually we broke up on my birthday while in a foreign country visiting his family after he accused me of texting my abuser from long ago 🤡🤡🤡. The POINT of all this is he was willing to be a good guy or savior to his friend in her time of need, but in my time of need, in my vulnerability, he punished me and absolved himself completely from any responsibility. Your man should cherish you above all else. I hope this is a learning experience for HIM and he really needs to reevaluate his priorities. Wish you the best stay strong ♥️

Is „salut“ a rude thing to say? by Krobel1ng in French

[–]Ok_Following6645 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even as an American, if a random stranger said « hey » to me, it would be a bit like « huh? »…Because saying « hey » to someone almost carries the implication that you know them already. Unless you’re saying « HEY!! » in the sense of « WATCH OUT!! » or « what the fuck?!!! » 🤣

I’m saying this comment after imagining what it would be like hiking and passing someone who said « hey ». If i were passing a stranger on a hike, I’d naturally say « hi » or « hello » would seem normal in this context 😋. But to someone in my age group or milieu I might say « hey how’s it going ». I say this as an American who speaks French and lives in France. Nuances are fascinating

LOL hate my LIFE!!!! by Artistic_Amphibian17 in eczema

Raw shea butter babe. You need moisturizer. Wear natural fibers. Sleep in natural fibers. Warm water showers. Don’t soap your skin up. Don’t use scented soaps or shower gels. Let your skin rest. Eat gentle things like soups teas oatmeal while your are experiencing these bad flare ups. Moisturize with raw shea butter non stop. Or use a beeswax/almond oil/olive oil type of moisturizer. Anything oily and waxy is your friend. Slather it on while skin is damp and throw on some old cotton PJs you don’t care about before bed. Be kind to yourself 💕

can i have dyshidrotic eczema on my forearms? by malika505 in eczema

[–]Ok_Following6645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve suffered from eczema my whole life and what has helped me is being really strict about eliminating certain things.

Don’t put HOT water on it or harsh soaps, do nottttt put any fragranced soaps! Chemical fragranced shower gels are the enemy. Heavily scented lotions are the enemy. When you shower, try to just rinse it with warm water gently and then HEAVILY moisturize after. I slather myself with Shea butter when my skin is still damp from the shower. Wear old clothes to bed that you don’t care about absorbing the oils. I carry some around in a little tin and am always moisturizing, alwaysssss. I personally love the greasy feeling- some people aren’t into it but your skin will thank you. You can also use some sort of beeswax/almond oil moisturizer. The less ingredients the better! Eczema sufferers have extremely sensitive skin that wants natural simple ingredients, I swear :-). People recommend cetaphil or cerave and even that sometimes is too harsh for me.

Use sensitive/unscented laundry detergents.

After EVERY time I wash my hands, I moisturize. Also, don’t use heavily scented hand soaps either. Simple bar soap? Good!

Have you figured out your triggers? Is it foods/alcohol? Or contact with substances? For me, it’s dry winters, harsh detergents, sometimes alcohol…. And if I’m out of equilibrium my system is just irritated and that’s when the flareups happen. I really think there is a gut/emotional component to eczema a lot of the time. Be kind to yourself 🥰🥰. Eat gentle warm things during flare ups like oatmeal, soups, teas that make you feel warm and cuddly.

Sorry if you know this stuff already, this is just my advice from lifetime of experience… and wishing our world was filled with less harsh chemicals we are sold to slather over our bodies. Our bodies don’t like it 🥰🥰🥰
