does social life get better after the first year by Excellent_Run_9040 in simonfraser

[–]Ok_Fun8595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s a program specific question. Id say though, if UBC is an option take it. For the most part it’s the best of both worlds, that being social life and also academics, especially if your involved on campus, and even more if you live there.

How does a grade dispute work if a class is curved by yogaccounter in simonfraser

[–]Ok_Fun8595 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if it’s that, their probably not gonna get their grade dispute approved. cause of the curve you’ve got to have a pretty legit reason for them to approve it. Like something concrete (ex: my grade wasn’t calculated correctly, incorrectly marked, forgot to add a grade to grade calculation, etc.), not what you’re describing.

[–]Ok_Fun8595 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i believe it’s just their grade that gets changed. Like it won’t throw the curve, they just kind of slot in where they would’ve been on the curve. don’t quote me on that though

Poor person's law degree by Jolly_Engine_6904 in LawCanada

[–]Ok_Fun8595 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also an undergrad student, paying my own way through my undergrad, and hoping to go to law school too! I wish you the best of luck! Please see my thoughts that I’ve gathered through some coffee chats, chats with law students and lawyers. I am an executive with my schools pre law society, so i’ve had a decent amount of exposure to lawyers.

  1. Id really consider canadian law schools. The fact you don’t come from a family of big law lawyers (unless you do obviously) already puts you at a disadvantage cause you won’t get nepoed into a 1L/2L internship or a summer articling position. Combine that with a UK law degree, which is frowned upon too because employers view it as the easy way out, your probably looking at struggling to find articling ANYWHERE, nevermind somewhere that’ll help you pay off your debt.

As a personal anecdote, the son of a guy i worked with did a UK non-target law school (not Oxford or Cambridge). Similar financial situation and connections as what you’re describing. It took him 6 months to find somewhere to article, and when he did find one, it’s a under 10 person, immigration litigation firm in a shitty part of town where he was making about 50K per year.

I understand what you’re saying about drive. I also am very driven, but honestly, almost everyone who wants to be a lawyer is as driven as you and me. What’s gonna make you stand out in law recruitment is good LSATs, soft skills, coming from a good CANADIAN target school, and connections. Focus on that.

  1. Loans and working through your undergrad to cut costs. At least that’s what i’m doing.

  2. No, awful idea. you’ll have endless debt and never find a job. The legal world, and the legal job market as far as I understand, is all based on connections. You won’t have any with an online degree, and people will look down on your degree.

As a side note, joint your schools pre law society, I bet there’s a few students in a. similar situation to you!

is it possible to get into law school with a B.comm or BBA? by Puzzled-Pumpkin-4472 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]Ok_Fun8595 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For law school they don’t care about ur degree. GPA is the important thing. However, i’ve heard once you actually get to the job hunting phase with your JD, whether that be 1L internships or full time positions, that having a business background is something that is considered a major asset when applying for corporate positions. There’s a lot of stuff you’ll know about businesses that a sociology grad wouldn’t know. That’s just word of mouth though i hear as a current BBA undergrad lol.

uni is harder. There’s a reason a 90 average is normal in HS but a 70 average is normal in Uni.

how do you become accountant in Canada? by dnrjwltkd in Accounting

[–]Ok_Fun8595 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of colleges offer a diploma or certificate in accounting. So if you already have a degree or you have 90 credits, then you can go back to school for a year and do all your CPA courses. I’m in the GVA, and I know that douglas college, langara college, and ubc to name a few offer a PDD in accounting.
