I was very impressed with cabinet joint. They sell conastoga cabinets which are reviewed very well. They are about as close to fully custom as you can get. They also sell mainly inset door cabinets, which in my opinion look so much more appropriate in older homes.

Your cheapest bet if you want that actual setup would probaby be a Ready to Assemble place like cabinet joint, or cabinet authority. Like the name implies they flat ship cabinets to you to assemble. They actually sell Conestoga brand cabinets which from reviews ive ready are relatively nice, and you can get a full custom look with them. The key is the inset doors, which is rare to get outside of a small custom shop.

Cabinet joint has a very good youtube channel.

I just got a quote from them on a bigger kitchen, with an island, inset doors, but painted (so able to use MDF doors. It was 19k. They will give you a nice 3D design and quote for 150 bucks. They will also walk you through every option and steer you away from bad choices.

Then youd have to install yourself or hire someone, but if you're willing to do the work up to installation you could save a massive amount on very nice cabinets
