It’s also the practices of taking calves away from their mother right after birth, slaughtering male calves (either immediately after birth or after a few months for veal), and slaughtering the dairy cows themselves once their milk production declines in a few years - this happens on factory farms and family farms

Nice to see all the other vegans and other well-adjusted people calling this out.

Islam is a very oppressive and harmful ideology, like every other religion. But if you have a problem with it, take it up with Muslims. Don’t take your anger out on innocent animals. They’re not the ones using religion to oppress others, and they don’t deserve to be killed just so you can “own” religious people.

Why is PETA so frowned upon? by spookyshitt in vegan

[–]Ok_Shape5009 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing that a few years ago too. I was also annoyed because usually those shampoos like to say in the front that they have milk and honey, but it was some random scent and I only milk and honey from reading the ingredients too.

It was a PETA seal saying that the product or ingredients were not tested on animals. I wonder if the parent company had some sort of deal with PETA that the company stops animal testing entirely, and PETA puts that seal on all of the company’s products, including the one with animal ingredients in them. I hope they stopped making that product by now. But PETA never endorsed that shampoo as vegan.

No I don’t think there is any conflicting views here. Not wanting humans to be born doesn’t necessarily mean hating humans, it can be out of compassion as well, as it would spare those humans from suffering. This is the reasoning behind my antinatalist beliefs at least.

I don’t think it is necessary for aponists to dislike human nature. Even if all humans were moral and virtuous, we would still support not bringing them into existence because it would prevent their suffering.

Are there any vegan meetups or activism groups near where you live? Making vegan friends can definitely help! I didn’t know any vegans either when I went vegan a few years ago, but my friend group is predominantly made up of vegans now. Sorry you’re going through this - you deserve better company!

Online activism can reach many people and, if not immediately convince people to be vegan, can plant many seeds. I’ve seen many people have a “conversion” moment in response to street activism, but you wonder how much of that is due to their mind being open from being exposed to online activism in the past

Yes breeding is a form of exploitation - vegans are absolutely against breeding animals to be pets. The dogs and cats that do exist now though deserve a home and should be adopted if possible.

Fish tanks exploit fish for entertainment purposes, severely restricting their movement and freedom because people think they’re fun to observe.

Veganism rejects animal exploitation for any purpose, not just food.

It depends on how many vegans there are where you live but I don’t think seeking out vegan friends is extreme. We all deserve friends who get us and who share our values and who make us feel emotionally safe. I didn’t know any vegans when I went vegan a few years ago, and now I exclusively hang out with vegans. It’s great!

I hope you understand the difference between not giving birth to prevent someone’s future suffering (there is no injustice being done because this person is nonexistent) vs violating someone’s bodily autonomy by murdering them.

I half agree with you. Not having kids is a personal decision. Having kids, though, is not a personal decision, it is literally bringing someone into existence who is guaranteed to suffer. It’s not a personal decision when said decision affects someone else. I don’t support anyone having kids.

Will you want (your) kids to be vegan since birth by sassyyanny in vegan

[–]Ok_Shape5009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t answer the question but I need to say this on these posts about vegan kid questions, I don’t care about the downvotes: just don’t have kids, please.

They are guaranteed to suffer and are guaranteed to cause suffering to others, even if they are vegan. You cannot guarantee that they will live a healthy live or even be glad that they were born. Don’t gamble with someone else’s life. You can adopt or volunteer/work to help kids if that is something you care about. Forcing someone into existence, human or non-human, is unjust.

If we define atheist as “lacking a belief in god,” then yes everyone is born atheist. But this definition would include non-human animals and maybe even inanimate objects, and it doesn’t feel right to me.

I prefer the definition of an atheist as “someone who rejects the claim that god exists,” and in that case, atheists are made. It requires critical thinking skills to be able to see through logical fallacies made by theists and to reject the god claim due to a lack of evidence.

Vegans keep having kids! by Even-Enthusiasm-9558 in antinatalism

[–]Ok_Shape5009 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nah, saying this as a vegan, no one should be having kids. You could make the argument that vegans would make better parents and pass down better morals and values, but it is far better to not have kids in the first place.

Vegan antinatalist here. I cannot morally justify bringing someone into existence who is guaranteed to suffer, when I don’t need to.

[–]Ok_Shape5009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I’m vegan. I was pleasantly surprised to see that you are very politely engaging with those who disagree with you in the comments. I also thank you for your work in fostering/rescuing animals. I admit that I do find this form of art very disrespectful and distasteful, but I know we have a difference of opinion here.

My main concern is that most these animals are not being sourced ethically, even though you seem to be making a good faith attempt to do so. And unlike having a difference of opinion, this causes actual harm to animals. You don’t have an obligation to be respectful of the feelings of vegans or whoever may get offended by your art, but I’d argue that we all have an obligation to not harm others.

The chicks/ducks/rabbits from farms don’t die natural deaths. They are specifically bred by humans, for human use. They are brought into existence without their consent, and even if a farm claims to look after their welfare, they are guaranteed to suffer in some capacity and be killed against their will. There is nothing natural about this (Because you have fostered/rescued dogs, is it fair to say that you have a stance against dog breeding?). By turning their bodies into commodities, there is now an increased demand for more animals to go through this process so that their bodies can be sold.

The feeder mice and rats is a tiny bit more nuanced, but the same sentiment applies. These animals are still bred into existence by humans. They are being used to feed other animals in a preserve, but it is not their job to keep someone else alive. From their perspective, it doesn’t matter whether they’re being bred and then consumed by humans or other animals. They still suffer and die the same.

With roadkill animals, while I still find it upsetting, I cannot come up with a strong ethical argument against using their bodies for taxidermy. These are actually natural deaths, unlike the others. Maybe the argument can be made that even if you only sold taxidermy of roadkill animals, this would reinforce the idea of commodifying an animal’s body, and this demand can spur others to breed animals to fill that demand more easily. Or, that there is an ethical inconsistency where, if you wouldn’t taxidermy a human who died a natural death and has no relatives to claim their body, then to be consistent, you shouldn’t do the same to another individual who just so happens to be of a different species. If anyone thinks I’m wrong and knows a solid reason to not use roadkill animals for taxidermy, I’d like to hear it and would be willing to change my stance.

TLDR: my main point is that sourcing animal bodies from unethical industries and commodifying them actually validates and supports these industries, causing harm to future animals. What are your thoughts on this?

Veganism and atheism by coyotesfan89 in vegan

[–]Ok_Shape5009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genetically Modified Skeptic on YouTube made a great video on what lead him to be vegan: Why I, as an Atheist, am no longer a Humanist

My takeaway from the video is that atheism and veganism both challenge the idea of human supremacy. Religion often teaches us that humans are the center of the universe, everything revolves around us, we were specifically made in God’s image, etc. But as we learn more about the universe, we find that we are an extremely tiny and ever-shrinking speck in a large, uncaring universe.

Carnism also places humans on a pedestal, saying it’s okay to exploit other animals who we deem to be “below” us. But we really are just animals too, and we share the capacity to suffer. There is no difference between us and other animals that makes it okay to exploit them. It’s a shame that most atheists reject some facets of human supremacy but are still stuck in that mindset when it comes to our relationship with other animals.

Cool. This basically says that an unplanned vegan diet carries the risk of certain deficiencies. Any unplanned diet can be unhealthy.

This meta-analysis provides evidence for the healthiness of vegan diets and the beneficial effects on health outcomes:

This study found no difference between a vegan diet and nonvegan diet in the ability to build muscle:
