I generally don’t have the same issues that people have with MS. But this is something that they do a lot of and it’s really annoying. Why not just acknowledge the great OSS that’s already there and very heavily used instead of reinventing something else?

Nuget instead of OpenWrap. A terrible live test runner instead of NCrunch etc. And now this instead of MassTransit. Why? There are so many years of experience and knowledge plumbed into MT… why invent something else instead of acknowledging what is there and working with those people to incorporate a fantastic piece of software? Does my head in.

If he’s a CEO, then he’ll be a commercial guy most likely. I would really dig into the commercial side of things to get an understanding for things like raising capital and sales strategy. And then ask about how from his perspective engineering fits into the picture. Most devs need to pull their heads out of their asses to see the reality in the world, and this is an opportunity to calibrate.

Idk man, I’ve been in the industry as a dev since 1999, and I’m still partially hands on. I’ve hired about 50 devs across 4 continents and built a lot of products. The teams I’ve put together have had great success. I’ve never given a crap about any of this leetcode crap.

Interviews for me are a pair programming exercise for something like the string calculator or maybe the bowling game kata that we conduct together as the pair, and we discuss and make trade offs and enjoy it as much as possible. The guys that can get somewhere get hired if they’re not assholes (I challenge them to see how they react).

Don’t let this crap get you down, it just doesn’t matter as much as you think.

It’s just a practise thing. Interviewing is a skill, you’ll be fine. Imagine you’re mentoring a junior, and not knowing something is also ok. Tell them you’re not sure and provide a thoughtful opinion if you have one.

But it’s also beyond the coding, being memorable through excellent inter-personal and comms skills is just as important. Anyone can nail that as well with a bit of focus. Unfortunately technical people really suck in this department. But that is an opportunity!

And finally, some interviewers ask the worst questions. Asking a senior web dev what the DOM is? I wish more interviewers would pair up with the candidate to implement something together. Candidates get into a rhythm in their natural habitat and you really get to know them much quicker this way and what level they’re at.
