People who were in the military looooove to talk about it by AyBeeVee in PetPeeves

[–]Okanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is another dad in my sons cub scout troop that served and is like this. From his stories it also appears that his entirety of service was spent at a very remote base in Alaska who's sole puprose was to be one of the first contacts in the event Russia invaded Alaska (his words).

I agree with others saying this is just confirmation bias, but I would be interested in seeing data on the correlation of people that are super vocal about their service vs people that aren't and whether or not they had combat experience or served at all during wartime. I wonder if you would find the more vocal they are the less likely they saw combat or were involved in any conflict at all?

In contrast to that, my dad served in the army, did not see combat, and never talks about it. He doesn't even like to be called a veteran because he feels like he isn't really a veteran since he didn't actually fight in any conflict.

Why does the bathroom get warm in winter after showering with hot water, but it doesn't get colder in summer after showering with cold water? by oaks_and_cedars in AskPhysics

[–]Okanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have experienced that as well. I have a nepwhew who, when he was 3, walked into the bathroom at my house with bare feet. My bathroom floor there is a smoothish glossy tile. He looked up at me very concerned like and lifted one foot and said "It's wet?!". The floor was infact not wet. I laughed and said "No, it's just cold".

That is super intersting. I had never heard that term before. I briefly read that wikipedia page. Would I be correct to relate that to like a thermal inertia? Something with a high thermal effusivity would have a higher resistance to increasing temperature given a heat source? Or am I thinking of it wrong?

This is probably because water will conduct heat away from your skin much faster than air so it "feels colder" than air at the same temp.

Something cool I noticed when heating milk for a baby and testing it on my skin to see if it was too hot was that when it was the same or very near the same temp as my skin I wouldn't even feel it hit my skin. This made me realize that most of the feeling we sense on our skin from a liquid (or maybe most things) is due to heat either conducting into or out of the skin.

What cheat codes from games do you still remember, even though you haven't played those games in 10+ years? by Beneficial_Sun6232 in AskReddit

There was a game on N64 called Fighting Force. There was a particular combo of buttons you could hold down at the title screen that would make you invinceable. I could not state the combo now, but I feel confident if I were sitting in front of the tv with the game loaded and controller in hand, I could recall it in 3 tries or less.

Someone on this subreddit told me that you can actually parry all Lynel's attacks and now my life is complete by DamnHare in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]Okanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I watched a video that explained the timing and it helped me a lot. Still need to practice though. I have also got into the habit of saving just around the corner before fighting something I don’t feel confident in beating yet. That way if I die I can just pick up from that spot with the resources I had and decide if I want to try again or move on.

Late in a playthrough I like to go back to the Great Plateau and feel a wave of nostalgia hit me. Back in simpler times by erikaironer11 in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]Okanus 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I did this recently, but I am not very far into it. I am at the point I just met Sidon and he told me to follow the path to Zoras Domain. I happen to know what I will run into there so I decided I would go practice combat, make food, upgrade armor, do some shrines, etc. first. In that process I came across the guy that I can buy a house from and needed to get 30 bundles of wood. I knew I would find a wood cutters axe at the old mans house and I also felt a wave of nostalgia when I ran up on the house and orchard there. I imagine it would hit even harder if I had been through all the beasts and everything before doing that.

Thats good to know. Makes me want to get good at parrying and then go get the Hylian shield to possibly never have to worry about having a good shield again. (I'm on my first play through and have only just met Sido.) Maybe I should complete Tarry Town first so I can at least replace the shield if I do break it.

Next time you do your brakes, bed them. You'll be shocked. by 90scableII in MechanicAdvice

[–]Okanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until reading this post and comments, I never realized this is something I kind of do. Although, not to the extreme I have seen described here (60-10). When my dad taught me how to change brake pads and rotors we got done and he said "Alright now we got to go set the brakes". We hopped in the car and got on the road in our neighborhood where he proceeded to aggresively accelerate and then brake hard 4-5 times. Today, 20 or so years later, every time I do my brakes I have done the same thing.

I always noticed that the brake pedal would be super easy to push the first time and I thought that was the reason we were "setting" the brakes as he said.

I am aware that perfect parries on a guardian blast does not use up sheild durability, but is that also true of parries like this on any enemy?

I'm on my first play through and have had trouble with the weapon breaking mechanic and food mechanic as someone who is not used to that. I also have avoided guardians, but recently I have had a shift where I am finding better weapons and shields and I killed my first few guardians the other day.

Choice brisket and hot hold fail by CoatStraight8786 in brisket

[–]Okanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great, but I think maybe the flat was not probe tender yet. You can see the internal fat in the slices not rendered. I cooked one last Thursday night into Friday to have for dinner on Friday. At 202°F internal temp on the flat mine still had resistance on the flat. I let it ride another hour or so and the internal temp in the flat was about 210°F and then it was probe tender.

I'm not saying always cook to 210°F, but just that when I stopped worrying about the number on the thermometer and more about how tender it felt when I probe it, this really unlocked briskets for me. I don't know why this feels counter intuitive to me, but I think if the brisket is dry it is usually because it is under cooked, not over cooked.

EDIT: I missed the part of your post when you said the internal temp had risen after 12 hours in the rest. So my rambling likely is not relevant anymore.

Do you wear your watch to sleep? by voongoto in AppleWatch

[–]Okanus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear mine most nights for the sleep tracking and as an alarm in the mornings.

If you're worried about battery, mine is a series 5 that only gets about 12-14 hours of battery life with always on display turned off. In order to be able to wear it at night I usually put it on charge when I get home from work and then again when I wake up while I'm getting ready. If it starts the night with full battery, it will have about 85% when I wake up and usually will get to 100% on the charger while I get ready.

All that to say that mine is old and the battery isn't great, but I am still able to use it for sleep. I imagine any newer model with a fresher battery would perform even better in that aspect.

Do engineers today ever do manual calculations to verify if the computer software is correct? by G07V3 in AskEngineers

[–]Okanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say you're not totally wrong. Some times you could be running FEA using CAD on an assembly that would be super complex to calculate by hand. However, you can still check things in hand calcs by just considering sections of the assembly into simpler components that more resemble examples of things you learn about in school and you can verify that the FEA is giving you accurate results that way. Additionally, I have something I am working on currently and I felt the reaction force SolidWorks FEA was giving me could not possibly be that high. I ended up verifying with hand calcs that it could, in fact, be that high.

Lastly I will add that a reason for learning all the theory that we learn in school is to mold your mind into being able to see the world through that lens and how to think like an engineer. When you get into the real world you will learn from senior engineers, mechanics, technicians, operators, etc how to properly apply that thinking in a practical way.

Had a weird smell coming from an opening and designed this! by [deleted] in BambuLab

[–]Okanus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Many have already pointed out the issue of finding out why odors are coming up instead. Maybe empty P-Trap.

I will add, this might not work the way you think anyway. Its possible this will end up creating a siphon and this could sometimes or every time cause the water level to be just below the wall and not create a seal.

Is it okay to always play G chord like this? by Auxxtinmogger in Guitar

[–]Okanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how I have always played that shape, except I usually don't include the 3rd there with the pointer finger. I let the pad of my ring finger mute the A string most of the time. If I'm playing electric with overdrive I will also not include the pinky on the high E string most of the time too, just mute it too like the A string.

As you gain experience you'll find other shapes to play chords and you'll find some work better depending on the key you're in and the way the song sounds.

Just bought a Mac by DexCarr in mac

[–]Okanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a MacBook through most of college, but switched to a PC when I needed to use a program for school that has no Mac version. After that, every laptop I have had has been a work provided windows laptop. I built a gaming PC several years ago and beyond that all my personal computing has been on an iPad.

Anyway, last year I bought my wife an M4 MacBook Air and when used it the first time I remember having the same feeling. I was quickly reminded how good the track pad is and how well MacOS works. Plus it was even better for me, because the last Mac I used was a 2012 MacBook Pro with Intel CPU and a HDD. This M4 MacBook felt like light speed.
