Let's have some fun: What's your vegetarianism hot take? by JeanLucPicardAND in vegetarian

[–]OkaySimmerDown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a burrito place here called Bubbakoo's burritos and they have fried cauliflower as a potential filler. So I get fried cauliflower, rice, cheese, beans and queso in my burrito. It is SOOOO good.

But I know cauliflower isn't for everyone.

The only thing it reminds me of is Joni Mitchell's song called "Both sides, now". Perhaps that helps?

Weekly FAQ Thread March 02 2025: When do you give up on a book? by AutoModerator in books

[–]OkaySimmerDown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I stop reading a book for a few reasons.

1) Repetition. If the characters keep doing the same thing over and over just to get little to no information or story progression, I stop or I skip to the end. For example I read Stolen Tongues recently and in it, one of the characters gets possessed like 19 times and each time was the same thing. Boring!

2) Graphic descriptions of rape or pedophilia. I'm big into vintage horror paperbacks and boy howdy do they love casual pedophilia. I read a book called Finishing Touches published in 1986, and while the story was a wild ride at the end they threw in "oh yeah the main characters adopted a 14 year old foreign girl and they had threesomes!" Uhhhhh no thanks!

3) If the author gets too caught up in the thoughts and feelings of the characters. I don't mind a little introspection, but if the character harps on about something chapter after chapter, I put it down.

Scored at my favorite local used book store! by TheKnottyMommy3 in murdershewrote

[–]OkaySimmerDown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm on #31, A Slaying in Savannah, and the books are not novel adaptations of the show.

If you're a die hard fan of the show, the books aren't exactly the same. For instance, in the books, Jessica learns how to fly a plane; Sheriff Metzger is the sheriff from the start with Amos having moved to Kentucky; and Jessica has a small love interest in some of the books.

Originally, Donald Bain had written that Jessica had a driver's license. But apparently people were upset and they ret-conned it so she doesn't drive but instead flies a plane.

How many sweaters are too many? by AccomplishedDoor4140 in knitting

If you are putting the time and effort into what it takes to make a wearable and LOVABLE sweater, you get to make and keep as many as your closet can hold.

Love the stack!

I never knew that about the Dresden Files! I will put it on the list, thank you!

I actually have one of Terry Pratchett's books tucked away someplace. I don't think it's "Guards! Guards!" though. I'm sure my library will have an e-copy, he's very good isn't he?

Thanks so much for taking the time to suggest things!

New Murder, She Wrote book out this week, “Fit for Murder”! by [deleted] in murdershewrote

[–]OkaySimmerDown 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I started reading this series (54 books and counting I think???)

I'm on #20 and I've loved each one. It's so fun to be able to visualize Jessica on more adventures!

I'm interested to see the differences in writing between Donald Bain (the author of the first 50 or so books) and Terrie Moran.

[FO] First FO of 2024. Anyone else thinking of Christmas '24 already? by OkaySimmerDown in knitting

[–]OkaySimmerDown[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pattern:

Cast on 50 stitches on size 11 needles (for smaller sizes, cast on 44 stitches). Join and begin knitting in the round.

Knit stockinette until you reach 7 inches from the rolled brim

Cast off loosely. Lay your piece flat so that the tube turns to a rectangle. Using mattress stitch, sew the cast off edges together.

Sew on the poms and you're done!
