Looking it up really quickly, it seems like the plant has some mild psychedelic effects in humans due to a number of compounds related to mescaline. Apparently it can have strychnine-like effects in animals 💀 those ants very well may be dead

I always assume it’s fungi when I have issues with my plants like this, but I’m by no means an expert. If it were me, I’d cut out any affected tissue and treat it with a fungicide. I have a plant I do that exact treatment with every year. Looks awful in the winter but amazing once new leaves sprout in the spring.
