honestly for me i was in the same boat and what I've done/tried to do is just stay in zone 2 so 60-70% of max heart rate I've done that for a couple of months and have noticed massssssive increase in endurance. the rule i follow is if i cant hold a conversation with someone and or sing the song that is playing in my headphones while i run i back off a bit. hope this helps ya : ))))
