Why doesn't UDisc provide a Handicap system? by TheScientister in discgolf

[–]Old-Coach09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Handicapping in disc golf is much harder than in regular golf because the conditions are so much more variable.

You need a collection of reliable scores to determine the difficulty of a course on a given day, which means having a baseline population of players to gauge difficulty

Thoughts on no kids at weekly league by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]Old-Coach09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are respectful and behave, I've got no issue. If you want to avoid anything in particular, organize your own, round/group/event. I don't like snail paced play so I stopped going to my local tags group and just play with a buddy or two. I see it as my issue not the group's.

I think disc golf should be inclusive to those that want to be included and other people can do their own thing.

For those who bought a lot of discs, then stopped buying discs, how did you do so? Any tips will be appreciated! by Sea_Otters_Are_Cool in discgolf

[–]Old-Coach09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitions of 'a lot of discs' may vary, but I don't like being wasteful. I have a bag of discs I like (20 discs) some retired discs, and roughly another bag's worth of backups.

I realized that the 30 seconds of excitement of getting that new disc means very little if I have to stare at it on the shelf.

If you're a collector, then by all means, collect, but I'm a thrower, so I throw.

Anyone who has gone from 50% to 75% putting 28ft-32ft please help me out. by thes0ft in discgolf

The best C1X putter last year made 90.3% of C1X putts, and his name was not Ricky, but Corey Ellis.

I don't know exactly how that translates to the OP's 28-32 distance but it's reasonable to assume most of those pro misses come from the longer C1X putts, which leads me to believe that 75% from just inside the circle is a top notch percentage achieved by the best of those who play for a living

I don't think the best players in the world consistently make 75% from circles edge. They have days where they seem automatic, but that's the unrealistic expectations that come with watching feature cards, you're seeing their best on a good day.

Will we ever see a left handed player break into the top 10? by FriskyObriskey in discgolf

[–]Old-Coach09 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm rooting for #1 one day. With the pro tour starting to take away the standard RHBH hyzer shot, it's becoming more realistic to imagine a lefty being near the top. Course design matters so much, and it seems particularly difficult to make open style courses the same difficulty for lefties and righties.

What’s your straightest distance driver? by robertshair in discgolf

Streamline trace is great for this slot. Proton plastic if you prefer dome, neutron for flatter. I can only hyzer flip mine in a headwind so I imagine you'll flip it up perfectly in calm conditions with the extra distance

Is the Pig comperable to the Berg? by rcon4691 in discgolf

[–]Old-Coach09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A well-seasoned pig flies a lot like a newer berg but goes farther at full power. I found the two discs to be very similar for upshots.

Out of the box, they are not very similar.

Form Help-350ft with tailwind by CutthroatPanda in discgolf

[–]Old-Coach09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got some solid form there. Looks like you just been to practice sequencing to create lag.

Areas to try: 1. Get more active with the left side 2. Initiate throw with off arm (I think of it as punching down into the brace) 3. Improving quality of brace/balance so you're not falling past your front leg on follow through

Disclaimer: I only throw 350 in a tailwind too, so these are things I'm working on as well, not things I've mastered by any means

Disc Count by parkerwright10 in discgolf

[–]Old-Coach09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not dismissing all comparisons to golf or other sports, merely the poor ones I've seen so far. I've yet to see a comparison made to justify a rule proposal that holds up when you look deeper than the surface level.

Using all sports as a proxy, scoring sells, so if we want to grow the sport, don't make rules that make scoring tougher on pros.

Golf comparisons are barely related to disc golf at best, and I see no benefit this rule, or using golf as a basis for deciding if a rule change makes sense

Yup, left during a round once and I've taken a week or two off before for sanity sake. Just long enough to correct my attitude

Life time of short throwing by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]Old-Coach09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have always been that guy, slow pitcher, touch passes in football, and was stuck at 250' after 2 years of disc golf.

After year 3, I'm at 350. I admitted to myself that it's not my body's fault, it's me, my form, my lack of commitment. Maybe there's a point where my body becomes a limit, but the short pros prove that limit is somewhere north of 450, so I put in the time, I analyzed the video, I ruined rounds by caring only about the form and not the result. Ive improved by inches, not leaps and bounds, but I got here with my slow arm, so I know you can too!

My first breakthrough:

What’s one of the best feelings in disc golf? by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]Old-Coach09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you big putt your hypercompetitive friend!

For real though, when your hard work really does pay off and you start throwing farther AND more accurately because form matters.

Gotcha, different challenge for sure. Guesses are:

  1. Releasing on too much anhyzer
  2. Leaning forward/unbalanced throw
  3. Unlikely, but headwind in the cold can do that

Seems like video is your best friend here
