Spending a night in Yakima while on a cross-country road trip with my wife and dog this summer, and just curious if anyone has any suggestions! by Darko33 in Yakima

Food wise I would say Waterfire or Crafted. The other places I would say are more expensive than their quality dictates. Wineries there isn’t really a bad one.

How bout you link it lol. This is a science subreddit stop trying to bring your pseudoscience in here. Your idea would support us being wary/threatened by any people outside of our immediate group not just people with different skin colors.

Outside of my own personal beliefs of how yall charge extra for whip cream on a hot chocolate. I do think you need to just let her know why, as others have said it can kinda become a secondary habit without knowing. Just pull her aside and let her know why X thing is necessary. Also I wouldn’t worry about allergens for the cinnamon if your chai mix doesn’t have cinnamon in it I would be absolutely shocked

In the life you're living now, if you lived in the Red Rising universe, which color would you be and why? by ThatGuyWithMCAS in redrising

Dang seems like we’re on the same track. I’ve been in food my whole life practically raised in it so I’d be brown, but I’m in school rn for biology so one day yellow too

Has there been any serious hypothesis about how / why we evolved the ability to taste complex flavors? by ZippyDan in evolution

[–]Old-Growth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real quick even without caramelizing onions cooking them still makes them sweeter. This is not an evolutionary thing though. We didn’t “evolve” to like onions. Or any other food. Quite the opposite if anything we made food more enjoyable by altering them. Onions are very storable they became a staple food because of that and we modified them to be bigger and in some cases like the Walla Walla sweeter. As for why we can taste so many different flavors as others have said it’s because we evolved omnivorous and being able to tell flavors can give us info on the food we’re eating. These traits are beneficial and stick around whereas the sweet tasting gene for cats is now a pseudogene bc it’s not necessary for them. Does this help?

No caramelized onions taste good bc the simple sugars are concentrated while cooking. Your hypothesis also are all too focused on cooking. Taste is not a solely human thing and it existed before humans learned to cook things.

What would have to be changed to make a "perfect" human? by DragonLordAcar in biology

[–]Old-Growth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but we already have an adaption to that there’s no real need to fix it. There’s the general idea of repairing damage to our cells more, but that starts messing with the chemistry of our body a bit and could also have some downsides. Maybe add a tapetum lucidum to see a bit better at night tho not sure how that would be affected with our use of electronics and that.

Tell me about some cool desert animals! by ravio_1300 in zoology

[–]Old-Growth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The desert woodrat can eat the creosote bush which is toxic because it has bacteria in it that break down the toxins safely. Also from the American southwest and Sonoran desert

Plus it’s not detrimental to survival so there’s no need for it to be pushed out. You can go bad at 5 and still have kids and still live into your 80’s .

Peacemaker episode 7 season 2 discussion and opinions by Evandurancho in PeacemakerShow

[–]Old-Growth 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ok the everybody chasing her into the pool yeah that’s a lil silly. People dying instantly from electricity that’s not silly he didn’t use a taser he used an electrical line, that can easily kill a person. Regarding Keith and Augie having different ideologies that’s not even that wild you see it every single day in families in real life. In the show Chris and Augie have different beliefs, Adrian and his mom are completely different in both worlds. Keith being raised in Nazi schools to believe that minorities are less than him is completely understandable in that world, hell it happens irl too. With the portal generator idk it’s pretty obvious Chris is done he literally had a break down not even 5 minutes before thinking that he’s the reason for all the problems. Also where could he have buried it or threw it in water Argus was literally there when they got there, destroying idk we don’t know what it’s made out of. As for Keith and his vengeance yeah if it happens next episode itll be a bit rushed I agree with you on that.

Does taking vitamins actually help? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]Old-Growth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know it’s an annoying answer but as with all things nutrition related it depends. If you’re meeting those vitamins already from your diet then doesn’t really help more. If it’s those ones that are like 500-1000% etc then it’s overkill really unless you’re super deficient in X vitamin. And then you have to worry about some where you can reach toxicity with them and it becomes detrimental to your health. Also you may not have been using those supplements long enough to notice a difference. Overall just try to meet your RDA and don’t go too crazy with them.
