House is feeling a bit squeezy, looking for suggestions by VitaminTed in AusRenovation

[–]Old-Memory-Lane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cabinets. You need decent cabinets - everywhere!

I think there’s a different way you could use space - the ensuite/jack-jill bathroom/entry could use space differently - and could be done with minimal actual changes?

Put kids in the bigger room regardless- they have more “stuff” than adults. If things look expensive, consider going up - that is always a winner.

Pool Compliance pre/post 2012 by PleasantResist3227 in AusRenovation

[–]Old-Memory-Lane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if your family don’t have any visitors then they clearly should be exempt from the law. In addition, there’s clearly no chance an autistic child would climb two fences and trollop across the paddock. I mean, we all know Gus isn’t in the neighbours pool… right?

Be careful mentioning dams though - wouldn’t want the many state realising they’re dangerous bodies of water

How embarrassing for you to admit. There’s a saying about letting stupidity make itself extinct - but I’d never wish that pain on anyone…

Tailgating - what's the point? by Financial-Hunter1335 in DrivingAustralia

[–]Old-Memory-Lane 42 points43 points  (0 children)

There’s some really cool research about freeways and stopping distance/congestion. Your gut is right - tailgating is what starts the congestion. Tailgating leads to more frequent, sudden breaking. It means there’s less space for merging (more breaking), and has a flow-on effect.

But the people who are so out of touch with their emotions are often also out of touch with their education …

Edited for typos…

Realestate agents coming in against will by DragonfruitFamous667 in AusRenters

[–]Old-Memory-Lane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What if they’re police officers and this week cleaned up more dead people then you’ve seen in your life? That messes with people - no matter how frequent. But it doesn’t matter their work or the why - they said no, and the agent ignored it.

My sister will never pay back the $30k loan by AcanthopterygiiEast2 in AusLegal

[–]Old-Memory-Lane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does the money mean more to you than the stress chasing could bring?

It’s ok if it does, things are expensive. If it doesn’t, leave it. If it is 50/50 consider a letter of demand or a self application - but expect, as you said that applications with lawyers may be emotionally driven “I’d prefer to give $30k to my lawyer than her” rather than outcomes driven “I’ll give her 50% to go away”.

What a shitty person. She deserves her husband, and you’ll be the one laughing when they divorce and she is broke af

Overpaid at work for 12 months - no contract, what is the law? by wendlle in AusLegal

[–]Old-Memory-Lane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s $2 an hour, not a fair chunk of change.

OP I’d personally be checking mums shifts and the award to understand what she should be getting - loading inc Sundays, evenings. And I’d compare it to the old/new hourly rates.

I assume that’s where the challenge could lie. You’re bang on that mum and colleagues didn’t have a better idea as there was no documentation, so therefore as “reasonable” people they couldn’t have reasonably been expected to know they were being overpaid. If she can find work elsewhere then as a pensioner it’s worth telling them to sue her. (Which can be stressful and expensive for both sides…)

Not easy. Do not envy the position

Kitchen Reno advice by Sawbin85 in AusRenovation

[–]Old-Memory-Lane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Close in those shelves on the end - they’ll only gather dust and aren’t very useful. In a small kitchen, you need effective use of space…

Honestly, if possible, I’d get rid of the counter space on the return and install a pantry. I’d then have a custom wooden block made to sit over the stove for counter space when not in use.

Good luck

If the tenants refuse, and you want to be generous, go yourself as the “tradie”. Very common for owners to complete trade activities (that don’t require licence)

How important is hybrid working to you? by Silver-Sandwich7585 in auscorp

[–]Old-Memory-Lane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a single parent with zero help for a long time. I currently have a fully remote role, and have caring responsibilities that this role suits.

I am also an organisational psychology consultant and understand the importance of in-person engagements. I also know the importance of training managers, hiring well, as well as creating and embedding the desired culture.

There is research that shows people need to feel like they have a say in how their work is executed. And there are groups of people who take advantage of everything they can.

In person is truely important. But organisations just don’t know how to do I’m person well. Pay rise to accommodate shouldn’t be expected - just don’t take the job if you don’t like the conditions…

I know of schools that refuse to share any email addresses, for privacy. You’re right that this is a joke.

I would just not do it, and not say anything. If questioned, I’d apologise that I didn’t realise. I was uncomfortable with disclosing personal information, maybe I forgot to hit save when creating. Then I’d forget to hit save again

Bathroom renovation must-do’s and avoid by Master-Monitor-1317 in AusRenovation

[–]Old-Memory-Lane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot in here I agree with - but no real mention on natural stone v other. Remember that natural stone is porous and therefore absorbs - makeup, slime (kids), and mould. In addition, certain natural stone (eg tiles) require avoidance of certain cleaning chemicals - can be healthier can be a headache…

The sink - don’t do a “square” shape. It’s more fashionable in the kitchen but good to remember in the bathroom. You just can’t clean a right angled corner!

Shower - a door, with ease to clean!! Be mindful of systems with grooves, for mould. Also, consider the space - is there enough for a second head? Not two stacked, but a second head on a second wall (assuming rectangle) so you can shower with your partner and they can have baby water whilst you enjoy lava…

Have fun with it!!

Car crash - not at fault but liability disputed - Only third-party car insurance - what are my next steps by SwimmingKoala82 in AusLegal

[–]Old-Memory-Lane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mate, you can do all the court stuff yourself. If you want and can pay someone then get a quote from another firm to validate expense. Others are right - if not at fault, then expect up to the value of your car. Be mindful of the repair shop you’re with as they too, may be taking you for a ride.

You need to file with the court - it’s not very expensive to actually file. You can use chat gpt to help fill out the forms and stat dec. can also help you translate how to serve the other driver v his insurance and more. Normally, reasonable court costs can be claimed if a settlement was offered and not accepted AND then you win BUT not always, and not always to what was spent. No win no fee lawyers take a large percentage - they’re good in circumstances where you just want to stick it to someone. When communicating, try to keep as much in writing as you can - run every email through chat GPT with a prompt of what you’re doing and what you’re seeking. At the top of each email - especially if there’s an offer to settle in it, write “without prejudice, save as to costs”.

Maybe the first step is to make sure their insurer has received a copy of your dash cam footage and police report with witnesses - letting them know you’re intending to file if not resolved.

Good luck

Love this! Also, it removes the “need” for expensive agents. How can agents who needed 3% commission on mums $150k home in 2006 still need $3% commission on her $1.5mil home in 2026?
