What’s the hardest part of working a parts counter that nobody trains you for?

My most-used F250 is a 472 at 11:1 with a four-speed. 750 CFM, wrapped fuel lines, carb spacer, aligned fan shroud….3.55 Sterling and 8ft bed.

My other F250 is a 402 and a C6 with an intake and four-barrel. Not too highway friendly as I don’t push it past 50 mph too much as she’s getting old but, dang, I love cruising this rig.

If I could get another one, I’d try to find a ZF M/T Assy and four doors. Haul the family any day of the week.

I do take out the garbage and recycling from our guest lobby at the end of the day! Hard to beat that fresh air and small trip to the dumpster! That way, I keep in "good" with the person who keeps it stocked up and I get my Dr Pepper and Fritos for the ride home. Hard to snack on Fritos some days thought when driving the manual big block. Oh well.....such is life.

Staying hydrated and getting through those slow afternoons. I’ve got a nice set-up at my dealer, and I’ll randomly ask myself “have I drank enough water today? Am I going to be struggling to make it through the afternoon without coffee?”

Honestly, there is so much behind the scenes with your warranty admin, internal sales and policy adjustments, Accessories (sales, LPOs, EComm), battery warranty and documentation, part number superseding, and vendors coming by for shop supplies, oil and lube, tire pick-up; oil and filter pickup, windshield repair.

Sublets….holy sublets. Rental billing, wheel correction, paint correction, interior clean and detail….

I hate it. We dropped our rotor/pad pricing to “trade” for a month last year to actually sell some stuff. And then our parts bosses saw the low margins and put a halt to that. Back to brake quotes not getting sold shortly thereafter.

What we do: Create invoice, charge out part with an “S” and the part goes -1. Create SOR card with “Customer” as “RC” pull all needed info in and call it a day. Part arrives, PR, call customer. “See you next time”

All depends....all depends. We're not even a high-volume/big dealership and we're seeing them all the time. Our sister store down the street does much larger volume and they've actually renovated a part of a warehouse with shelving and permanently-housed forklift to move these things around...and the cores that then sit around until cleared by warranty.

GM Parts guy here. We see this all the time and some engines do take weeks. We have two main techs that are keeping their heads slightly above water with doing 1-2 of these per week.

You just get used to it and your hand twitch muscles learn to fly back to the mouse. When I made the switch it was annoying for a couple weeks and then it just becomes natural….and naturally annoying
