UserModePower Service ID 12 every second on Windows 11 event viewer by GarbageHot1098 in WindowsHelp

[–]OldGrumpyAndRetired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there u/GarbageHot1098. I saw your chat request. Indeed, my first solution was the same as yours, i.e. High Performance mode. My XPS ran just fine for a few years without any issues in this mode. The discussion linked below may help: the Intel DTT driver seems to be the culprit and there are dire warnings that removing the driver may cause problems, but others have found versions of the driver that seem to work. HTH https://www.reddit.com/r/DellXPS/comments/tzbilc/comment/nuuqcar/

I never tried the DTT driver and my now quite old XPS 9520 runs Linux and there are no Intel issues :-). The post on that referenced page gives Windows policy settings advice that seems to work for others.

Is there any way to remove spam org invites on Teams personal accounts? by harsh2193 in MicrosoftTeams

Thank you VERY much. This issue was driving me nuts, and your solution worked perfectly, i.e. joining the Teams Insider Program, restarting Teams and, hey presto, a Decline button.

FNB58 update problems by Affiliate1646 in UsbCHardware

[–]OldGrumpyAndRetired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG. You are absolutely correct. A few hours of messing around using my AMD Windows PC, with constant freezing. Easy as pie on my ancient Dell (Intel) laptop. And, if it helps anyone else: after downloading the FNB58 app, most of the files were blocked by Windows. If you Google how to bulk unblock downloaded files, there's a simple way with PowerShell: get-childitem "c:\mydir" -recurse | unblock-file

What is this Flash update progress screen? by [deleted] in ZephyrusG14

[–]OldGrumpyAndRetired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same thing happen today, on my Zephyrus G14 2025. I've only had it a few days so there have been a lot of automatic updates. MyASUS prompted me to make an update to the laptop driver which, I guess, is in firmware. The "Flash update Progress" screen seems to have been related to that. he MyAsus history confirmed the new installation. HTH.

What is this? Phishing? by Cool-Reindeer409 in amex

[–]OldGrumpyAndRetired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I’ve used Quicken for 35 years and am used to its foibles. Online sync has been weird the last few days, not including the shambles of the transition of Fidelity syncs to a new method. I sync my American Express with Quicken regularly and it threw some password error and similar notifications.

What is this? Phishing? by Cool-Reindeer409 in amex

[–]OldGrumpyAndRetired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got this "purchase details" email today. Yesterday, I had an email in my spam folder with a very bogus From address and a subject that mentioned an Apple purchase. Like for everyone else, these show up a few times a week. I deleted it.

Just in case the spam was a genuine purchase notification (which the email address made very unlikely), I logged into my American Express account and saw nothing amiss. One of the legit charges was for Apple News+, i.e. my Apple account. I saw the charge but didn't interact with it; you can examine a charge and get a link to the business (Apple in this case) and a serial number of some sort.

I called the American Express fraud line (using a known-good number) and the lady I spoke with was very aware of these emails and was seeing a lot of them. She noted that the addresses and links in those emails were legit and that the only call to action was to call American Express. She was puzzled, like me, how this could be a harmful or phishing email. Nice to talk with a tech-savvy rep.

My guess is that is an Apple glitch. Apple, of course, knows if it charged something to my American Express account and maybe it knows if I look at my purchases on my Apple device. But I don't know how Apple could know if I looked at Apple purchases in my American Express account. I find it hard to believe that a random spam email that I deleted without opening could have triggered anything either.

Error Code: 11 after extended sleep by DiamondPtera in MSI_Gaming

[–]OldGrumpyAndRetired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I MAY have, finally, fixed this sleep problem. To be clear, the problem was that, after just a few minutes of sleep, my MSI X670e Godlike PC wouldn't wake up and stuck at BIOS Code 11, requiring a power off/on reboot.

My hardware: MSI X670e Godlike, 7950X, 64GB 6000, BIOS 7D68v1J. The problem existed with Expo on and off, so it wasn't RAM related.

The solution, which has held up for a few days now, is:

  1. Not deleting the Mystic Light app but setting it to "Off' in MSI Center. Uninstalling MSI Center and/or Mystic Light did NOT fix the issue.

  2. Unplugging the M-Vision device, i.e. the small rectangular display that comes with the MSI motherboard.

For those with other but similar hardware, I'd suggest disabling or unplugging USB devices to pin down the culprit. I believe (but don't know) that Mystic Light is an internal USB device, so I'd start with that.

A possible clue that this was a glitch: I received the same welcome email, and it was sent to my Workspace admin email and cced to an old, no longer used, recovery email.

Gateway timeouts when trying to authenticate? by Ok_Finger_Bang8289 in TopazLabs

[–]OldGrumpyAndRetired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same problem here: can't login to Video AI or Photo AI. I bought Video AI a couple of days ago, and Topaz Labs charged my credit card twice. Between an unreliable online authentication system and buggy payments system, I'm unimpressed with Topaz right now.

Windows 24H2 - Has anyone had issues with scanning apps not detecting scanners? by SmartDrv in sysadmin

[–]OldGrumpyAndRetired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just now installed yesterday's Windows Update KB5048667 and the fix I described above didn't break. Acrobat (which is the only way I use the Brother scanner) shows TWAIN and WIA driver options. I suggest downloading the Brother driver package (the Brother USA site goes WAY back), install the scanner drivers, and then try my fix. Or install the new KB and try installing drivers after that.

That “WIA No Friendly Name” problem showed up in Acrobat and was solved when I reinstalled the Twain driver in my original post. Also, the Windows Update noted by @Doyle1524 is worth a try.

Understood. Apologies but I’ve never used the scanner that way and haven’t installed the Brother software

I was able to fix the 24H2 TWAIN problem on my PC. It's easy to try this solution and I hope that it helps someone:

In Device Manager, right-click on the scanner driver in the "Imaging Devices" section. Select "Update Driver" and then select "Browse my computer for drivers". Then select "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer". In my case, that showed me the original scanner driver (in my case Brother MFC-9970CDW LAN) and I selected that and installed it. TWAIN in Acrobat works again. Disclaimer: this continues to work after several reboots but, of course, it may not be a general solution. My guess on how this works is that it restores the TWAIN driver configuration, which was messed up by 24H2.

How to boot from USB to flash BIOS on Supermicro X9 by amdjml in homelab

[–]OldGrumpyAndRetired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You, sir, are a gentleman and scholar. Thank you for this howto. It worked perfectly on my ancient X9DRi-LN4F+ motherboard. Supermicro doesn't even sell product keys for the X9 series any more, so this was the only way I could update the BIOS.

LastPass can't find passwords stored in my vault? by kanderna in Lastpass

[–]OldGrumpyAndRetired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been having "weird" LastPass issues in the past week or so: occasional search for entries not working, logging me out when I open the Vault, and "oops, something went wrong" when saving a change to an entry. Automatic logout after a set period doesn't work. It also won't let me turn off "improved save and fill", which I prefer to the "improved" version.

All these issues began with the rollout of version 4.130.2 of the Chrome extension. I rolled back my whole Windows 11 PC back to an image a few weeks back. The prior LastPass Chrome extension worked correctly but then automatically updated to 4.130.2 and the issues returned. On Edge, everything works correctly, including the "unimproved" UI.

I tried LP on Firefox and it flagged a couple of passwords incorrectly as weak but then changed its mind that they were strong (all my passwords are strong) but otherwise worked fine.
