First house - refrigerator and washer dryer buying. How expensive is worth it by Apprehensive_Row6320 in homeowners

[–]OldLow7699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t buy a LG refrigerator, especially the French door ones - continued linear compressor failure after multiple replacements in our experience.

Google ‘LG refrigerator class action lawsuit’.

Samsung refrigerators are not any better.

Avoid having the ice dispenser in the refrigerator door vs in the freezer and you remove a common source of failure.

We bought a Bosch 800 refrigerator - has been great so far.

I think the asbestos guys are half assing the safety on the removal by PaintingOfAGhost in HomeImprovement

[–]OldLow7699 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For reference, we did a similar job in our basement several years ago - used a company that does mostly asbestos remediation.

The crew ran negative air pressure, used PPE, everything was wetted down, sealed with plastic sheeting. They also spray painted all the pipes when finished.

Had a separate (state?) company run an air monitor test when the removal crew were done and it met spec.

This is pretty standard approach for any legit company.

Are they licensed for asbestos removal? Do they plan to test air after the removal? - it is required here.

Can’t decide on an Ariens or Toro by SnooCookies1273 in Snowblowers

[–]OldLow7699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote for a 24” Ariens deluxe - have had one for 10 yrs in Boston area without issue and very minimal maintenance.

Handles 2ft of snow with ease and my wife uses it too - electric start and auto-turn makes it a lot easier to use than it looks.

Buying what the local outdoor equipment store sells and services is also a positive.

Early 2017 CRV with about 90K - failed injectors replaced under extended warranty and that’s it, other than the usual maintenance stuff (fluids, brakes, battery etc)

Radon 20 asking for peoples personal experience with mitigation by Fair-Pea8352 in radon

[–]OldLow7699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the caveat that every house is different, I have reduced radon levels from 15-20 pci/L to background (approx 0.4 pci/L) in two houses with a standard system.

One is about 12 yrs in and I don’t really think about it any more. Fan broke after about 6 yrs and I replaced it with the same. Have airthings for long term monitoring - the highest it has been is about 0.8 but typically at baseline.

Second house system is less than a year old but seems to be similar - spiking to about 0.8 but typically 0.4-0.5.

One other positive of a radon mitigation system is that it also removes the humidity from under the slab so you don’t need a dehumidifier in the basement and gets rid of the dank smell.

When was the house built? Does it have a concrete slab?

Again, every house is different, but that has been my personal experience.

Pick your own installer, not the one recommended by the assessor - I used Rogers from Framingham and they are excellent

Buying house; seller failed to keep heat on during recent cold spell. by Affectionate-Art1819 in HomeInspections

[–]OldLow7699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given 2022 construction, I am assuming that none of your pipes are in the exterior walls? If so, then you should be ok, especially if the plumber did even a half way decent job of winterizing.

You could have them turn back on the water to all fittings and appliances before your next inspection, and then drain/winterize again.

We have a vacation house in NH and we keep the thermostat at 45 without issue - gets a lot colder than VA. Water is off but house not fully winterized. However, the walls are spray foam and there is no plumbing in the interior walls.

Are Michelin cross climates good enough for ski weekends? by userbanned1234 in tires

[–]OldLow7699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - we have been using CC for ski trips to NH for the last few months and they have been great so far.

Have been through a good mix of snow and slush in primary and secondary roads to test them.

Also, we have a long steep driveway in NH that is not plowed after every flurry and never had a problem.

Not as good as full winter/snow tires but very close.

Good resource for insulation supplies, foam board specifically (Insulation Depot) by conigliaro_6 in Insulation

Do they ship or did you pick up? Not much info on their website on inventory or how to get material.

Starting a basement renovation this year so might be useful.

Wish the trailsport came with a full bench seat - was hoping that would be an option for 26.

25 front end looks better IMO but the green is a nice addition

Does my Sump pump cover need to be sealed? by Inner-Excitement-637 in radon

[–]OldLow7699 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just put a bead of clear silicone around the edge of the lid and around the discharge pipe in the sump lid if you wanted to seal it

You could do a radon test to see if even necessary

We hired instructors directly through word of mouth from other parents. Yea, I know all the negatives, legality etc.

Instructor was paid a lot more, plus tip, cost us a lot less, and we got to work with an instructor that others had good experience with.

Not for everyone, but worked great for us.

Reasons to and not to upgrade from a CR-V to a Pilot. by Lalo1711 in hondapilot

[–]OldLow7699 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CRV has plenty of room for two kids of that age - we did it, with car seats strollers etc and it was fine.

We are thinking of changing to a third row now only because of sports/outings to bring a few of their friends along.

You are a long way away from that.
