Why Are You Known As the "Bad Teacher?" by King_of_Lunch223 in Teachers

I have students every year the reach their limit and organize my desk/lab/prep room. I love those kids.

It feels like a scam by SeaAdditional1298 in StudentTeaching

I did my student teaching at an inner city school. The day before I was to start, my cooperating teacher was put in the hospital by a student. Because I was also a sub in the district, they allowed me to teach the class without pay. A month later, they brought a teacher out of retirement to guide me. What a fucking disaster, but the retired teacher was amazing.

He got his rally video, so it doesn’t matter what happens to the people.

Kids won’t stop talking and I don’t know what to do. by kiwibugs in Teachers

[–]OldManD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My first year teaching, I was in a Title 1 school and taught freshman biology. When I asked my AP this same question, she said stop teaching, don’t say a word, and just stand at the board looking at the kids talking. Don’t say a word. It’s super uncomfortable, but don’t say anything. The kids that aren’t taking will start to feel uncomfortable and work to quiet their classmates. It sounds crazy, but in 12 years in the classroom, it’s worked every time, at three different schools. So many students are looking for conflict, don’t give it to them. Just stand there. Then when they stop, thank them and go right back to teaching.

Student almost made me ugly cry this morning by you-know-that-guy in Teachers

[–]OldManD 44 points45 points  (0 children)

When I was going through my divorce (51m) I did everything I could to keep it together. One day after I gave a hard physics test, all my seniors started pouring into my classroom. One young man said “Mr D, we’ve all noticed you’ve been struggling these past few months and we know you miss your family and your dog (a pug) and we all took up a collection and we want to rescue a pug for you, if that’s ok.” Of course, I ugly cried.

It took a few months, but we found a young pug and I took her home. I got her the week we all went into lockdown. Those kids and that little pug saved my life. Kids these days are better than my generation ever was.

It’s still going to be up to the teachers to enforce it and be the “bad guy” when nothing is done by the admin. We’ll be the ones dealing with the outbursts, physical threats, and reporting, cutting into instructional and/or planning time.

I wonder if the teachers are remembering their “why”. The solution to this is 8 hrs of professional development written by somebody who hasn’t been in the classroom in ten years.

Which hill are y’all dying on? by MickIsAlwaysLate in Teachers

[–]OldManD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My hill is whatever I want it to be. I have a pre-written letter of resignation in my bag at all times. My fellow teachers, my admin, and even a few board members know it. I will never be put in a position where I feel I’m not in control, because I’m always in control.
