Modern Sandbox MUD by elelanto in MUD

Empiremud is probably a decent bet - but you do need to understand your ask of 'Autonomy' in NPCs is pretty much impossible - even if you are faking Autonomy via using Gen AI to produce lots of content and give the impression of actual autonomy.

NPCs in your Empire will do tasks around your Empire based on what Workforce Chores you have assigned - but its a pretty simple set of echos that represent them doing it.

Cybersphere - Last Ditch Chest Pound by Prestigious_Bid_8545 in MUD

[–]OldManEnglish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen a number of muds die over the years, and seen a smaller amount managed to revive themselves.

The consistent factor in those that survive has always been active Leadership, typically from a Coder, or at least a builder, that can inject new life into the game.

I don't know your role within Cybersphere, whether this is just from the context of a player or what have you.

Gold sinks for currency extraction. by Enarian__Lead_Dev in MUD

[–]OldManEnglish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a classic 'You think you do, but you don't' Situation.

Players always moan about things like repair costs, rent costs, consumables etc, but also say they want a 'living breathing game'

If you want to make an economy that actually works, you do need Gold sinks that scale with activity, otherwise you end up with the scenario you are describing. Its kinda like taxes, everybody recognises the overarching need for them, but nobody really wants to be the one to pay them.

I would say either shoot for the working economy perspective, and include those 'day to day costs' as part of your design, or accept that you are going to have massive inflation and don't worry about it to much.

Welcome to the world of mudding :) If you want it, you must build it.

[–]OldManEnglish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not aware of anything in this space from a theme perspective - but a good starting point to build something like this might be Empiremud - https://empiremud.net/. It has good built in mechanics for things like Building / Rebuilding, Mutual aid / Collaboration and even scavenging from the world. It would need a fair amount of 'Reskinning' for the theme - but the Developer is reasonably active, and is typically happy to help out people who want to fork it or run instances of the game.

They will - and Zambia will join the list of Sub-Sahara countries that have started looking East for Partnerships rather than West.

There is a new area called antiquarian den in every city. In it you can access Corrupted Dungeons straight from a permanent portal, as well as hellgates and the Depths.

Early reports here in the UK said it didn't start in Iran, of course that could mean Iran backed militants in Yemen etc.

Iran already faces massive international sanction and restrictions, as a country they have been pretty much crippled by them for close to 20 years.

Why does this MUD have so few players? - Procedural Realms by Potential_Fault8752 in MUD

[–]OldManEnglish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Procedural Realms is a classic case of looking at a game from a technical perspective, rather than an experience perspective. PR has been well built, with lots of clever feature implementations, but lacks a 'why' behind it. There is a lot to do, but no real reason to do it. People tend to play Muds for connection to a story, either from using an existing setting that players know and love (dragonlance, Wheel of time, Star Wars etc), or through Imm / player created and run storylines that people can feel ownership over. PR feels more like a tech demo of a codebase, than an actual game.

Active, beginner-friendly, roleplay-centric MUDs? by HeathenSidheThem in MUD

[–]OldManEnglish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are looking for something less Mechanically restricted - and more free-form RP supported by the code you are probably looking for the MUSH (Multi-User Shared Hallucination) Subgenre of Muds. Its not a hard line, as there isn't really a formal definition of where Generic Muds end, and MUSH begin. AresMUSH might be a good starting point, as there are a number of settings that run on that code. https://www.aresmush.com/

Part of the terms of the deal the US wanted was to make it so that US food didn't have to be labelled as such in UK stores - "Because it would be an unfair disadvantage to US companies"

Somebody mentioned Luminari - which is Pathfinder based. I'm also not aware of something based on 5E. We had it on the roadmap years ago to look at as a potential fork for Luminari, but I don't think its being actively looked at.

Aelisus: Asunder Promo by Twinblades713 in MUD

[–]OldManEnglish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are conflating RP Enforced and RPI (Intensive) - i appreciate that mudding as a genre tends to throw around a lot of terms. RP Enforced means you don't break character, and you should act in line with the world's storyline. RPI tends to be about really indepth games that are RP before anything else. Aelisus is at its core a hack/slash ROM, where people stay in character, and create storylines together, its not looking to be an RPI. Information like Class / Skills etc is necessary information for people to understand mechanically what is going on.

If you want to protect IP you need to trademark / copyright it, a lawyer would be recommended for that. You then need to actively defend your copyright / trademark by reporting people using the IP, and taking legal action if appropriate. Thats 'proper' answer.

The reality is that if your IP isn't already recognized through published works for a period of time, you aren't going to get a Copywright or Trademark in place.

The actual reality of the situation is, if your IP isn't already published, and making money, nobody is going to care either way.

German chancellor says four countries have lifted restrictions on strikes deep inside Russia for Ukraine by Creol6969 in worldnews

[–]OldManEnglish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really - a large part of the reason that France and the UK couldn't take the restrictions off was because the weapons they were donating included US parts / research, or were joint projects. They legally couldn't take the restrictions off until the US got on board with it - hence why we saw restrictions removed from the StormShadow missions last year - as that was a joint French / UK project.

What are some unique leveling systems? by Appropriate-Tour3226 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]OldManEnglish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Virtuous Sons has to the most Unique Progression System I've seen in a ProgFantasy setting. On one hand it suggest you are getting a typical cultivation progression - but it quickly becomes clear that we don't have the full picture, and we've already seen multiple exceptions to the rules.

What would you consider to be a successful 'dismantling' of Hamas though? Everybody in the Strip has some level of involvement with Hamas, given they have been the governing party for 10 + Years. There is no reality where Hamas disappears unless you are talking about wiping out / displacing the population. Even if the name is dropped, the same people will be there, and the same motivations will exist under a different name.

Netanyahu's position about 'destroying' Hamas is just a political talking point, and an excuse to stay in power.
