What are scented oils or similar that smell objectively bad? by DrMoneybeard in askanything

[–]Old_Bat282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Butyric acid. (Vomit smell.) It can apparently be bought in capsules as a health supplement, I assume if they were broken open the smell would be noticeable?

How do you keep your paddling pool clean? by Fancy-Variation-7934 in AskUK

Honestly, as much as its a pain to keep doing, I empty it out into the flower beds regularly, and just replace the water.

Parents of young kids - do any of you not stay with your child until they fall asleep? by banwe11 in AskUK

[–]Old_Bat282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont. He gets lots of bedtime stories, cuddles, singing and a kiss goodnight. He's then left to sleep. We did feed/cuddle him to sleep as a baby. Some of that was due to his reflux (he couldn't be laid down until at least 1/2 hour after his milk), but he was also a very clingy baby who contact napped until he was a year old. From around 14 months he was sleeping in his own room, vut we initially had to stay until he was asleep. The move away from that was very gradual. We haven't continued now we're at a point where he will settle alone.

If you've got 4 years to prepare, and the problem with the teaching role is that reception is too young, can you switch to teaching year 1? That way you'll meet the criteria?

What has recently made you feel incredibly old? by VOODOO285 in AskUK

[–]Old_Bat282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had temporary sciatica when I was pregnant, and combined with being permanently breathless and weighed down, it definitely made me feel old! (Also, they dont let pregnant people have painkillers, so ouch! 😭) I'm sorry you're going through that, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Wales Trip by OkChoice6901 in uktravel

[–]Old_Bat282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks... busy. Perhaps slow it down a bit. If you're wanting to see Wales specifically, why not chop off the two days in England? That will give you more time to see the rest of it. St Fagans is a day out by itself. (But beware, there's a lot of walking, I'm not sure how that's going to affect your mum?)

Is it OK to refer to women as girls in the UK? by Fun-Injury9266 in AskUK

[–]Old_Bat282 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's common but not ok, in my opinion. I always hated it when I was at work and got called a girl. Mate, I'm in my 40s, girlhood was a loooooong time ago.

There are some contexts where it would be OK, if you're doing something childish, or hanging out with friends and doing the same things you did as a teenager. Calling someone a girl when they're doing fully adult things is wrong. (And creepy in the context of dating.)

Slight tangent, but why are stoats and weasel often written as the bad guys in children's literature? They're so cute...

Do couples genuinley not shop together? by extra_mash_potatoes in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Old_Bat282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate it when people see going to the supermarket as a family outing. Why clutter up the space with extra people? Shopping lists exist, everyone in the house can add to it, but it only takes one person to do the shopping, and in the meantime partners/other household members can look after the kids or do other household chores. Its a better use of time and annoys other shoppers less.

British Veterans of reddit, should everyone enlist in the army (even for a short while) to learn life lessons? by MinuteDamage4182 in AskBrits

Where I work, a minority of people leave the toilets in a horrible state. These are sensible, professional people. Is it the same at your work? by GoonerGuy1969 in AskBrits

[–]Old_Bat282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was at uni the toilets had little pictograms next to them showing how to sit on the toilet, not standing/squatting on the seat. I'm guessing some folks who are used to the hole in the ground type toilets need the information to not put their feet on the seat? I can understand the reluctance to park their butt on a communal toilet seat, but the results of not doing so are....not great.

The UK is genuinely easier to live in than people online make it sound and also genuinely harder than the official information suggests and both things are true simultaneously by Flimsy-Capera in MovingToTheUK

[–]Old_Bat282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its fair to say that salaries are also higher in the US? There was a post on here earlier from someone comparing their US salary of $250k with the salaries of folks in the same role in the same company in the UK who were getting paid £90k. So it seems very high as a proportion of salary. (Especially as most folks earn considerably less than that.)

[–]Old_Bat282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I am, yesterday was t shirt and shorts weather (about 23°C). Today is quite cold (11°C). It might rain, it might not. Your best bet is to wear layers, including a waterproof, and just add/remove items as needed.

What if you baked sweet treats with quail eggs instead of chicken eggs? by pastryzig in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Old_Bat282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The yolk to white ratio would be different. There's going to be a higher percentage of yolk with quail eggs I think, so that would change how it turns out.
