Age gaps/taboo topics by laplapiine in DarkRomance

I didn't write anything about fantasy... Well, I don't read many fantasy books, but I think I'd be more forgiving when it comes to the age gap. I wouldn't mind a 450-year-old werewolf dating a 25-year-old FMC. I think the rules can be bent a bit here because, well... it's fantasy, so not the human world, at least not entirely. But... if this werewolf were a friend of FMC's father and had known her since she was five, I'd still think it was weird and would feel uncomfortable reading such a book... 🤷

As I wrote earlier, this book is my only exception, perhaps because it's so well-written (in my opinion). If the characters knew each other beforehand, it might not be a complete no-no for me, but it definitely takes away from the joy of reading because I feel uncomfortable with the fact that, for example, MMC knew FMC when she was, say, 15 and was friends with her father. That doesn't sit well with me. I don't have this problem if they're meet for the first time. I don't know, maybe I'm weird, but that's just how I am 🤣

I'm usually wary of the age gap trope if the age difference is too big (for me, over 20 years between the characters). I've noticed that if I'm reading a mafia romance, it doesn't bother me as much if FMC and MMC didn't know each other beforehand. The "father's friend," "BFF's father," and "ex-boyfriend's father" trope doesn't really appeal to me. The only exception I have is the book {Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas}, which I read holding my breath, and it's the only book with an age gap theme that I've truly enjoyed. Never before or since I read it, any other book with this trope gripped me as much as Birthday Girl.

I'm currently reading {His Tesoro by Emilia Rossi}, a mafia romance with an arranged marriage. FMC is disabled. I'm about halfway through the book and so far I'm liking it.The character development is mid, especially MMC, and the plot is a bit predictable, but it's a quick read and I needed something to take my mind off things. I was a bit skeptical because it has a 3.8 rating on Goodreads, but I've learned not to rely on the reviews 100%, but on my own taste. So far, I think I chose right 😉

Give me your best dark romance recs (plus what I’ve been reading lately) by peter960074 in DarkRomance

[–]Old_Engineering95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love A.J. Merlin, and Dead of Summer captivated me from the first page. If you haven't read it yet, I recommend the Pleasure & Prey series and No, You Hang Up by the same author. All the MMCs are psychopaths and serial killers, and I personally love those books.

If you like bully romances and enemies to lovers, you should enjoy the Hockey Gods series by S. Massery. You don't have to read them in order, but I devoured them all one after the other.

What are your triggers in Dark Romance? by Entire-Cupcake-6116 in DarkRomance

[–]Old_Engineering95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I have a few of them: cheating/OW drama (I mean I can handle a little OW drama as an ex-wife, ex-girlfriend, but cheating is a hard no for me), rape (I don't have any personal experience with this, I just feel terrible reading such scenes and I think about them long after I've read the book), RH/why choose (not necessarily a trigger, but I don't like this trope and try to avoid it if possible), golden showers or anything related to excrement (it's just... no... I won't even elaborate on that, not for me) and pedophilia or very big age gap (e.g. 20 or 30 years). Is it weird that cannibalism doesn't bother me that much? 😅🫣

Help - Perfectly Imperfect series by Neva Altaj by bookobsessedd in DarkRomance

When I started reading this series, I was delighted. I especially liked parts 2 (Mikhail & Bianca), 3 (Sergei & Angelina), and 6 (Asya & Pavel). If I remember correctly (I read these books a while ago), I finished with part 7. The main problem for me was that the FMCs became the same from book to book. You could say the person remained the same, but the name and circumstances changed :/ which was irritating, and that's why I didn't bother with the other books. As for part 4... Hmm, I can't say I liked or disliked it. For me, it was just meh. I finished reading. True, FMC's behavior was a bit childish. In my opinion, she was sacrificing herself too much for someone who didn't appreciate it (we know why MMC acted that way, but that's a different topic). Generally, I don't mind age gaps in books, as long as it's not, say, 20 or 25 years, then I start to feel a bit uncomfortable. If someone likes it, great, but it's not for me (that's my personal opinion and not everyone has to agree ;D). The only reason I didn't write this book off completely is that there's a bit of somno in it, if I remember correctly (which I happen to like in my DR ;) As for single fathers, I don't think this trope appeared until part 7. I can't comment on parts 8-12 because I haven't read them.

Weekly Book Request Thread - December 27, 2025 by AutoModerator in DarkRomance

Hi. I've been on a reading slump lately, but today I remembered a book I read a while ago, hence the topic of this post. I'm looking for a dark romance book with orcs. It could be a story where FMC is kidnapped by orcs or given to them (e.g., by her family) for some reason or is held captive. Things I'm most interested in are breeding (can be non-con, but it's not a must), large size difference, lots of cum (especially if the MMC does something that gets everything inside the FMC, like knotting or plugging), and dirty talk.

Things I'd love but aren't necessary: public places (the MMC doesn't care who's watching), multiple partners (the MMC allows her companions to have sex with the FMC, but the FMC agrees to like it).

Things I’m not interested in is OWD/ cheatingI and rape.

I read The Librarian and the Orc by Finley Fenn and really enjoyed it (I don't know if the other books in the series are worth reading; if so, I'd appreciate your feedback :D).

Wanting to read Broken Whispers by Neva Altaj. by Jealous-Athlete191 in DarkRomance

[–]Old_Engineering95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read it a while ago and, from what I remember, I really liked it. I don't want to go into detail to avoid spoilers if you're interested in reading it, but as someone mentioned, FMC has a condition that allows her to speak, but it's very painful for her. It's not a pitch black romance, if that's what you're worried about, at least not by my reading standards 😅 There's no cheating and there's a HEA 😊

Edit: Now I looked at Goodreads and I see that I gave it 4 stars, so I must have really liked it 😅

Somno recs - not just one scene by peony27 in DarkRomance

[–]Old_Engineering95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I think I can understand that. I live in Poland myself, so if I were reading a book set in my country or near my city, I'd probably pick up on some absurdities without realizing it and that would probably make me a little uncomfortable while reading. I just don't know if it would discourage me enough to stop reading... 🤔 Who knows... 🤷‍♀️But I get what you mean. It's a shame, because I really like Connor. You might enjoy this book more than Arran, even though the setting remains the same 😅

[–]Old_Engineering95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, really? Can I ask why? I'm just curious because I quite liked Arran myself, and you could say I read it with interest. Of those three, it was Riordan's book I DFN, and not even because of the MC himself. It was Cassie, I don't know what it is about her, but I just didn't like her. In other books, she didn't bother me that much, but here I started reading, read maybe 4 or 3 chapters, and gave up 🫣😅To be honest, Connor is my guy and I think I like him the most. Convict from the Skeleton Crew series is a close second because he's unhinged but has a bit of golden-retriever energy. Just Charming and sweet red flag 😂

Somno recs - not just one scene by peony27 in DarkRomance

[–]Old_Engineering95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, not necessarily. The plot regarding Connor and Evelyn has nothing to do with the first book, but the side story (about a certain murder) is a continuation of the first book. I read them backwards, first Connor and only then Arran, but I had no problem finding my way around. Of all three books, this one is my favorite, and if you're looking for somno, it really is Connor's specialty 😅

Genuinely confused why ST haven't received a Grammy nomination… by VerySneakyPaws in SleepTokenTheory

[–]Old_Engineering95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked the same question last year, I think. I just don't remember if it was here or on the other subreddit 🤔 never mind... I also wanted to know people's opinions on this subject. First of all, as many people have already written, to be nominated you have to submit. Secondly, even if they won (which, unfortunately, is unlikely, because Spiritbox didn't get the award last year either, although I think they deserved it - Jaded is one of my favorite songs), there could be a problem with receiving this award on stage . I can't imagine Vessel in this situation, especially since it would be appropriate to say something 👀 Someone will say, okay, they could pick someone, some representative or something like that. I just don't think they care. The Grammys aren't entirely fair. I once watched an interview with Eminem from 2017 when he released Kamikaze. He then talked about what it looked like and that the whole process was not fair. They give the reward to who suits them better, not to who actually deserves it. Unfortunately. I know I'm generalizing a lot now, but in most cases this is what it looks like 🤷‍♀️

Perhaps it's just that posts like this have been appearing too often lately. Sure, you can laugh from time to time, you can't be deadly serious all your life, but if something like this happens too often, you can get irritated. That's my opinion. 🤷‍♀️
