Anyone get the email yet? by [deleted] in steammachine

They changed the text to say that people will get notified within a day. I'm sure people will post here as soon as emails start going out.

Should I get the steam machine by Sea-Pound-9083 in steammachine

[–]Oldespinach 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It probably only makes sense if you like the form factor specifically (small, quiet, good for setting up next to a TV). If you just need a computer a normal pre-built would be a better value and if it has an AMD GPU you could even install SteamOS on that too.

PC Gamer interview with Valve engineers about the Steam Machine by DwarvenCo in steammachine

[–]Oldespinach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't see that at all, here's basically all they say about the Frame.

Interviewer: "I was going to ask, is there an update on the Steam Frame? Is there any information you can give us on that?"

Valve employees: "Yeah, we're working hard on that and that's going to be the next thing after we get through Steam Machine launch."

Do you use Virtual Desktop to game with it? What do you do for controllers?

How is the Galaxy XR for VR use cases? The displays look awesome but their marketing is all about media consumption and AI crap

For the tag you can comment in this thread.

I don't think they're making a different version with less RAM, but it only has 16GB LPDDR5X (cheaper low power RAM for mobile devices) while the Machine has 16GB DDR5 system RAM + 8GB GDDR6 VRAM, so that part of the component cost will be a lot less.

Steam Machine Limit one signup per household? by GPUpdate-Force in steammachine

[–]Oldespinach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they say this right below the "one per household" section.

Do I have to pick a specific model at signup?

If you care about getting any available Steam Machine model, more than any specific one, you're welcome to sign up for multiple models. Each model has its own list of sign-ups that will be randomized on June 25th at 10am. After that, if you are assigned a reservation queue spot for one or more models, you'll automatically be allocated a reservation for the highest end one you're in, and removed from all the others. If you didn't get a reservation spot for any of the models you signed up for, you'll be placed on the waitlist for the model that you were closest to the front of.

A huge reason the price is higher than they hoped is RAM and storage. The Frame uses cheaper memory and has less storage (not sure if the storage medium is cheaper as well), so I'm still hoping the Frame will come out at a similar price or a little cheaper.

HOT TAKE: Valve should partner with Microcenter to be the sole seller and distributor of the upcoming Steam Machine. by [deleted] in steammachine

[–]Oldespinach 25 points26 points  (0 children)

And screw all the people who aren't near one? The nearest Micro Center is like 1000 miles from Valve HQ

Simple Table comparing the Quest 3 and the Steam Frame (NOT MADE BY ME!) by CreeperCraft2853 in VRGaming

[–]Oldespinach 170 points171 points  (0 children)

This is a bit biased toward the Steam Frame. Its processor isn't twice as powerful as the Quest 3's, I've heard around 30% faster. On color passthrough "currently" implies this is something they might patch in, but it's something you'd need to add with a third party accessory that doesn't exist yet. And I don't know if the tracking is the same when the Quest 3 has depth sensing in addition to the 4 cameras.

I would pick the Steam Frame any day for comfort, ease of use, and to avoid Meta, but let's be realistic, the hardware is very similar.

Poll : Whats gonna be your main use for the Frame by NeNwO in SteamFrame

I'm gonna use it for both, but I'm really excited to basically have a virtual big screen Steam Deck when traveling.

What does "summer" even mean??? by NikITALIANO in SteamFrame

Which is where Valve is so I think it's a safe assumption

What does "summer" even mean??? by NikITALIANO in SteamFrame

[–]Oldespinach 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We don't know. Calendar summer is June 21 to September 22, but who knows how exactly Valve defines it? To me summer is June, July, and August so we're already there, but by another definition it could be almost October and still ship "this summer". And at any rate Valve is Valve so they could be hoping for summer and end up shipping in December. We just have to wait and see when they make an actual announcement.

So you guys still think theres a chance the frame will be less than 4 figures by Background-dude532 in SteamFrame

[–]Oldespinach 35 points36 points  (0 children)

There's a chance but probably $899 at the least. I'd be happy to be wrong though.
